I've heard so many bad things about this film, and the comments here really don't help.

This sounds like a misadventure, and just another film from Illumination that I will likely skip out on.

I actually liked it more than most critics and people here. There's some really fun animation, and Cumberbatch is clearly having a great time voicing the character. It also has a really nice heart that gives the movie a cozy feeling.

Also Pharell needs to do more narrating.

The Grinch opened within 5 million from Despicable Me 3, and it could finish close to the 260 million from The Grinch (2000).  The Fantastic Beasts is unlikely to impact The Grinch at least a month out from now, and Fantastic Beasts, The Grinch, and Ralph Breaks the Internet are all going to compete with Mary Poppins on 12/19/18.

Great record!

Grinch is now the highest-grossing Christmas-themed pic of all time and the top Seuss adaptation.

With regards to Christmas-themed films, what about The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe ($745 million WW)?

Forbes said Illumination's Grinch is the highest Christmas themed movie of all time. Variety, Deadline etc all reporting the same.

Second is Home Alone with 476m.

I think their criteria is that the film is outwardly Christmas related (ie in the promotion, trailer, posters and story)

Grinch 2 imminent.

But what could it be about...

Nah, but possibly another Seuss work will get animated...Grinch, Horton, The Lorax, and The Cat and the Hat have all been done either animated or live action...but it's been awhile for many of them...and The Cat and The Hat's 1st try is an easy effort to improve on...or they could Yertle the Turtle or the Sneetches or something else popular but easy to take almost anywhere in a plot...

Warner Animation Group is doing a Cat in the Hat film next and possibly additional Seuss films in the future.

The animation division of Warner Bros. Pictures has struck a deal with Dr. Seuss Enterprises to produce a series of films based on the characters and stories created by childhood mainstay Dr. Seuss, the companies jointly announced Wednesday.

The first project out of the gate will be a fully animated version of Seuss’ classic The Cat in the Hat. The project is in the development stage and a search for a writer will begin shortly.

“Our Pictures Group is home to some of the world’s most popular film franchises, and we’re honored to add Dr. Seuss titles to that roster,” Warners chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement. “With Warner Animation Group, we’ve really revitalized our feature animation activities, and this partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises will continue our move into world-class, wide-appeal animated fare.”

Not sure if this means Illumination will be unable to make additional Seuss films in the future.

The Grinch‘s black ink at $184.6M turned in lower profit numbers than other Illumination hits such as Sing ($194.2M), Despicable Me 3 ($366.2M), The Secret Life of Pets ($374.6M) and even the Despicable Me spinoff Minions ($502.3M). The profits listed here do not include merchandising revenues. The lower profits on The Grinch were largely having to do with the fact that Dr. Seuss is not well-known outside the English-speaking foreign markets and Germany, hence the film’s overseas B.O. ($240.6M) trails that of other Illumination hits Minions ($823.3M), DM3 ($770M), Secret Life of Pets ($507M) and Sing ($363.7M). That said, Illumination built, and Uni sold, Grinch for a combined production and P&A cost of $196M, which is 12% less than the combined average production and global P&A costs of those four Illumination films. While the studio spent $121M worldwide in P&A on Grinch, it also received an additional $80M from 60 worldwide promotional partners. Marketing partners on the 2000 Grinch movie contributed $50M.
