fishstick
Michael Shannon wasn't a newcomer in 2011. Especially not young, hot and diverse. There are several strong contender roles with black actors in the lead this year so someone's gotta get in. The Futurist
I really think nobody will be able to defeat Redford's narrative this year. Sorry Léo, come back next time.
Dilusha Bandara
I really think nobody will be able to defeat Redford's narrative this year. Sorry Léo, come back next time. You're talking like you've seen all the movies this year. Redford is safest bet from what we've seen already, but all other actors' performances are still to come. I'm sure Redford will be a strong contender, but he can't win the Oscar.

Redford is safest bet from what we've seen already, but all other actors' performances are still to come. I'm sure Redford will be a strong contender, but he can't win the Oscar. Redford is winning. (And some of us already have seen a decent number of Awards contenderes And coupled with Neilsen screenings we've basically had word on everything but American Hustle and Monuments Men, both of which are still unfinished I believe.) I don't even think Leo's getting nominated anymore. The subject matter just isn't there and Wolf looks not up the Academy's Alley. (Though, The departed wasn't as well. But that got amazing reviews. And this probably won't match it.)
Sims
^Agreed on Leo. He will miss out again, even if the film does okay.
Impact
How about The Book Thief? I read the description and it sounds like a Oscar type film.
Impact
Meant to put that in best actress-but this does seem to be a contender.

riczhang
do you think Carell has any chance for a nom? Sounds baity, and SPC will put up a good campaign, but I don't think he'll make it. I don't believe in the film's quality, especially with it getting the shaft from Sony to SPC.

Impact
Book Thief is a YA adaptation isn't it? I have no idea-the premise upon reading it just sounded like a Oscar film. (Hey to be fair-so are quite a few classic films though) Edit: Hugo and Life of Pi were these also, but this one sounds more PG-13 or even R just off the plot I read. Jake Gittes
In one scene in the film, a coked-up Belfort furiously dry-humps a first-class stewardess on a flight to Switzerland. It’s reminiscent of the alarming comedy in Scorsese’s earlier films—classic Joe Pesci stuff. DiCaprio’s natural grace remains (it was there even when he played a sadist in Django Unchained), but he’s never been so feral. And this is one of Wolf’s tamer scenes. “It’s a modern-day Caligula,” says DiCaprio, “the height of debauchery.” http://www.vulture.com/2013/08/dicaprio-scorsese-wolf-of-wall-street.html

Blankments
In an alternate dimension where the BLANKIES are an award show, Simon Pegg is nominated for Best Actor. Only performance I really like so far beside Pegg is Jordan.
