baumer
Recent expectations. In the last week everyone was expecting it to open with 25M or so. Obviously when they greenlighted it and gave it a Summer release date they were expecting 150M+ DOM total. But you don't spend 130-150-200-250 million on a film hope it makes 20 mill opening weekend. That's my point.
CJohn
But you don't spend 130-150-200-250 million on a film hope it makes 20 mill opening weekend. That's my point. Of course. This thing got out of control. From a 130M budget to a 195M budget. From Summer to March 1st. From epic fantasy to kids stuff to epic fantasy again. Obviously things didn't went according to the plan Edited March 2, 2013 by CJohn
shayhiri
Somewhere right now Brad Fuller and the Platinum Dunes team is smiling.Jack the Giant Slayer is the reason why Friday the 13th is dead. When I and others, spoke to him on twitter and email, he explained to us that WB would no longer finance another Friday sequel, even though the first one did incredibly well, because they were going to move ahead with bigger films like Jack the Giant Slayer. Now keep in mind this was 2010 when he told us this. They were not interested in smaller movies that were sure to turn a profit for them because they wanted to concentrate on films like JACK THE GIANT SLAYER. Those were Brad's words verbatim. With a production budget of about 200 million and not doubt a marketing budget that will put this close to 300 mill, they are going to need a massive WW haul to make this profitable. If this opens to 20 million in NA, it won't make 60. Now it might do well internationally, I don't know. But wouldn't it be a huge slap in the face if they made less profit on this than they did from Friday the 13th?Fuck you WB for being greedy and fuck you for abandoning a property that has a incredibly loyal following so that you can sink piles of money you made from films like TDK and Potter into a film like Jack, that no one cares about. Well, fuck you too then - along with every American* who prefers cheap torture porn endless sequels over A VERY FUCKING ORIGINAL AND BEAUTIFUL ALL AGES ACTION ADVENTURE!!! You hear me, baumer? On behalf of WB, fuck you too. * You guys should say "movies that Americans don't want to watch" - not "movies that people don't want to watch". Americans are NOT (the) people. Americans are only a minor fraction of the people. The fact that they are mostly obese and weigh MORE than all the other people of the world combined does NOT make them more substantial.
cookie
Recent expectations were low because there's a lack of faith in it. Obviously WB had far higher hopes when they first green-lighted it, otherwise they would've ditched it from the start.
CJohn
Fee. Fye. Foe. FLOP. WB's JACK THE GIANT SLAYER was #1 yesterday, but scored just $7.7M. The fairy tale ends here.
CJohn
THE LAST EXORCISM: PART II scared up just $3.2M yesterday--about 1/3 of what the original debuted with. That, folks, is a back-breaker.
CJohn
Where's McLovin when you need him? Relativity's raunchy teen comedy 21 & OVER flashed just $3.3M on Friday and will debut w/ < $10M.

If they spent that kind of money on the film they better hope they see some kind of profit for it at the theater. I kno WB is swimming in money right now with TDK, Potter and LOTR but that doesn't mean that this will work. And I'm not sure how a re-imagining of a classic fairy tale makes it original, shayhiri.

That being said I thought the Friday the 13th remake was pretty horrible so I can't get too upset that never came to be.

Just wait until Man of Steel and Hangover 3 disappoint and Pacific Rim bombs. And Hobbit 2 will also decrease from the first. And Beautiful Creatures was already a massive flop. Now Jack happens. Bad year for WB. The money is going to disappear very fast.
