I for one think both the show and the books have been declining in quality dramatically. But whatever.

 

While beautifully shot, I really do not think Sansa hiding such important information from Jon is nitpicking. Imho it is bad storytelling.

She sent the letter, she didn't get the reply. I don't think she knew he'd show up, nor when.

 

It wasn't bad storytelling imho, just bad decisions after bad decisions based on honor and pride(yes, pride in their own honor, they aren't perfect) by the Starks, which falls in line with how they are.

What was the point in Sansa telling Jon?  They likely had limited supplies, and Littlefinger has never been the type to rely on.  She sent that letter hoping for a miracle, but her telling Jon could equate to him forming his strategy around an army that might not come.  There's flaws in the logic, but people have to remember that characters are supposed to represent people, who are flawed.  Yes, characters make logical mistakes, but that doesn't always make it bad writing.  It's easy for us to look in hindsight and say, "The characters are idiots!  Why didn't they do this!" But in human history, these are the types of actions and behaviors humans have actually had.  

 

Just like Rickon not zigzagging.  A few seconds ago this kid thought he was going to die, after sitting in a dungeon having to play who knows whatever sick game Ramsay had for him.  Sometimes the most obvious answer won't pop into your head when you need it most, that's realistic, people make dumb, on the moment decisions all the time.

 

The Sansa thing will only be bad writing if it doesn't come up again, which given the trailer for next episode, it's probably coming up.  People need to stop equating a character making a dumb decision as the writing being bad, people are stupid and make stupid decisions and it'd be stupid not to show it.

Imho it becomes bad storytelling the moment the deus ex machina arrival is played out... especially since we had that already in the series. At least twice.

 

But whatever, I can live with that. Other things regarding both GoT and ASoIaF bother me much more.

How?  It's not like it wasn't set up?  

 

Not only that but it plays into next season as well, because Littlefinger is now entangled in the northern plot.

Do not get me wrong: it is nothing bad in general. But the way it was set up and played out in this episode simply did not "get" me. Exactly because it is played like a deus ex machina moment despite it being set up. These moments sometimes work (Rohirrim, Eagles in RotK) and sometimes they don't (Eagles in TH3). For me it wasn't convincing storytelling after the battle episodes they delivered before, especially with the Blackwater battle where they handled that "late arrival" moment already.

I'm curious why you think the books are declining the Theon chapters in dance were some of the best in whole series. As were Jaime's in Feast. Dany's story is little stupid but her Jon's act as mirros to each other showing the difficulty of ruling

You are right that there are still true gems in there.

 

However, it has gotten a bit too broad for my liking, too much focus on characters I never really cared about or am not that willing to start caring about. I simply had troubles engaging with the story and truly emotionally invest in it over the last two books.

 

I think I might start reading the series again in the future. Maybe I will have a different outlook on it then.

I think it was needed to show Jon "redeem" himself (and his family) for the North. Rickon's death + Jon almost sacrificing himself would play a part in winning back some lost sympathy for the Starks than if the Vale just swooped in for the victory from the start.

 

More importantly, Sansa did lay out everything to Jon regarding Ramsay's machinations and Rickon's predicament pre-battle. Jon took his own stubborn Stark-esque decisions regardless. Would Sansa telling Jon about a letter she wrote that she never got a reply to have changed his mind any?

 

The outcome didn't have the same impact as Blackwater, but that was inevitable as it was already done in Blackwater before (and the incredibly effective Cersei/Tommen scene ensured the Blackwater outcome would be difficult to live up to). Though I still think of the alternatives, this was the most satisfying choice to make for Battle of the Bastards.

Watching Battle of the Bastards again, I'm starting to get pissed off they didnt give the giant a damn tree trunk or a big ass club.  Imagine if he had anything other than his bare hands, he would have smashed right through the Bolton wall.  They wouldn't have needed Littlefinger's saving.
