wileECoyote
Oz is a floppit no way around it. Disney expected AIW numbers hence the budget + marekting and this is falling way short of that target. merchandise will make it profitable enough maybe even for a sequel but it doesn`t change the fact it`s a floppit. They were really pushing the epic angle for such shoddy OS returns.I take it as, at least their taking good risks. Maybe they didn't match your or my expectations but to those that matter, not so much. A disappointment maybe it could be a wise "investment" in the end. ChD
I do remember people saying that about Hobbits first OS numbers..."Oh, it's awful. Such underwhelming OS numbers. This is definetly going to keep it from earning $1B."Now Hobbit has made $1B worldwide. You say it like it passed 1B still in shape and having a high speed... From what I see it crossed the 1B barely alive, crawling.

ChD
I didn't think they would make a sequel anyways because they wrapped up the story pretty well in the film and tied up all loose ends (besides the ruby slippers). I think when Franco said "But when they will come back, and they will, they can't know I'm still alive." was meant to drop a not so subtle hint that there would be a sequel. Gopher
I think this is just another example of a studio shooting themself in the foot because they spent too much on a blockbuster, even when the blockbuster had a solid opening. With 300m+ sunk into the production budget and marketing, this needed 600m-700m minimum to be a short-term success and it may only crack 500m because they overestimated the Oz brand overseas. I still can't believe Disney let Franco headline this movie. RDJ and Depp weren't available, yes, but I could imagine other names being significantly bigger draws than Franco. grey ghost
Since it also drives merchandise and theme park opportunities, Disney is probably willing to take a loss theatrically to keep the franchise going. How often does that happen? The only example I can think of is GI Joe and that's because Paramount and Hasbro were desperate.
