Favourite Movies of All Time

Recommended Posts

I need to branch out more in indie-foreign cinema (you guys probably all think I'm crazy ) I'd don't like subtitles much so I basically stay within the confines of English, French, and Italian cinema. Other European cinema I'm decently familiar with, but the only chinese language films I've watch (and I can recall) are Ang Lee's early works, Kar-Wai Wong's, and Zhang Yimou's. And that's about as mainstream as you can get for foreigners watching chinese cinema. Japanese cinema, I know a lot of the classic directors, I don't like most of it. Rashoman's just boring and bad. Don't even get me started on Studio Ghibli. I think Tokyo Story's the only film I genuinely thought was good that was in Japanese.

Studio Ghibli has prodiges somr masterpieces.

Studio Ghibli is pretty great from what I've seen. Porco Rosso is on my list on the previous page (one of the best animated films I've seen), and Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Ponyo are all wonderful. The only one I didn't like was Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Still need to see Grave of the Fireflies and Princess Mononoke, among their most celebrated works.

I think we've tried to do a forum top 100 about 20 times. If we do one, we should do rankings 1-100 and go by most number 1s, 2s, etc, rather than trying to convert to points. Whichever film has the most 1s should win. I've tried to edit my list about a million times. Here's my top 2:MagnoliaForrest Gump

I think that A) we have done lists like this already, but B) if we do one again, then there has to be a transparent ranking of the films and a formula that is easy to figure out as to how the films rank where they do.

I make no bones about my immense love of Apollo 13. I was nine when it came out, and seeing on a massive screen really had a big effect on how I watched movies. For me, it's one of those films like Shawshank and Goodfellas that I'll watch to the end on TV, no matter where I start it.

You people are full of shit. It`s impossible to have a favorite list without some notoriously bad movies. Everyone has a list of bad movies they love and will defend forever. You lists read like Best Movies instead of favorite movies. C`mon, add some realness.

I proudly have Deep Rising, UW:RotL, Rambo 2 and AvP on my list.

If you read my list carefully, I have half of Haneke's filmography in there, Sophie's Choice in the top 20, a few Bonds....... And TTSS at #5 of all time. I will defend that choice (and Amour at #12) to the ends of the earth. And I don't think I've really liked any notoriously bad movies.

I honestly never found much distinction between the two. To me my favorite movies are basically the best movies I've seen, and vice versa. I never had a situation where I watched a movie and thought it was one of the best movies I've seen, but not one of my favorite movies because it's too boring or uninvolving for that or something. If it's too boring then it's not one of the best movies I've seen, plain and simple, because it failed to engage me even if it had some outstanding things going for it. I don't have a problem with calling movies that are too depressing or disturbing my favorites, either - Irreversible, for instance, is pretty damn hard to watch, but that just means I'm not going to come back to it that often, it's still one of my favorite films because it's incredibly well-made and strongly affects me emotionally.

So are we talking about "best" or "favorite" here? I somehow doubt richzang watches Napoleon (1927) constantly

I've seen it a few times, it really is quite good. And I didn't make a distinction for this list, but I've seen all the movies on the list multiple times.
