Hiccup's Critical Review Year 7

The 39 Clues: The Sword Thief- Boring, childish, and uninviting, this third installment of The 39 Clues is just as weak as the previous two. The cast is mediocre and the 3D and visuals are merely okay. I have never understood why these films are such a big hit with audiences since they are basically your typical young adult garbage.

LucIId- With a fantastic cast (big nod to Andrew Garfield), state-of-the-art production design, intriguing storyline, and great visuals, this sequel leaps ahead of its predecessor and is a must see summer sci-fi flick.

Amulet- The Amulet is long for an animated film, boring at times, the plot sometimes ridicules, and Bryan Singer’s direction is mediocre and this all hurts the film a lot. The only redeeming quality is that the cast is pretty good. The Amulet should entertain families during the typically quiet month of August.

Extrasensory- Besides the obvious mental connections to Fox’s found footage film Chronicle, Darren Aronofsky’s Extrasensory is a brilliant masterpiece with top-notch acting (especially Kid Smitt-McPhee, Julianne Moore, and Kara Hayward), spectacular direction, and thrilling plotline. Extrasensory is must see film event that I hope will be recognized at the Oscars....it must be recognized!!

The Terrible Plight of Freddy Zapper- Tim Burton is on a slow and gradual career decline and The Terrible Plight of Freddy Zapper only speeds this up. The cast is mediocre and the songs are dull and lifeless. The film is one big freaky 50’s camp fest that doesn’t work well at all. Booo Burton!!

The Fall of Boss Tweed- This isn’t a bad movie at all but is has flaws that are too strong that make it seemed bad. The film has several strong points in that it is straightforward, easy to follow, and genuinely has a good plot line. The film is long and it loses your attention about mid-way. The acting is good not great though like a film like this demands. It felt that there wasn’t enough passion and interest behind the film. It was simply facts and plot thrown up on the screen. Hugh Jackman could have easily had an Oscar in this if he would have cared to put passion behind his acting and if Ridley Scott would have given him a better script to work with.

I definitely hope to see a remake of this in the future. Lots of potential.

The Vast Dark: Shadows of the Past- The Vast Dark Series is a legendary horror series. This 6th installment doesn’t stop. However before we review the film let’s take a look at the previous films!

The Vast Dark Trilogy Part One: The Serpent's Egg: $66.1 million / Our rating: 7.7/10

The Vast Dark Part Two: The Sacrament: $75.5 million / Our rating: 7.9/10 (Made #22 on the Top 25)

The Vast Dark Part III: The Exectution: $87.1 million / Our rating: 7.6/10

Vast Dark 4: $72.9 million / Our rating: 4.0/10

The Vast Dark: God is an American: $68.9 million / Our rating: 3.5/10

It is stunning from a box office standpoint. The all the installments still have grossed more than the first, which is extremely rare in any franchise. The film has declined in quality but still is a power player in the box office.

The sixth installment is fucked up, bloody, and violent. It is everything that is wrong with modern day horror.  The acting is still terrible and the plot insane. The film has abandoned the clever script of the first three and has gone down the Saw and The 13th Night road. The film sadly doesn’t improve on the past two awful installments. I honestly am hoping for this to be the final film. The series needs to end with dignity and not be dragged out.

Maybe a few years down the road. My original idea might still have potential; focusing on Nast and his taking down of Tweed. :)

That was the point! It was supposed to be a ridiculous camp fest. :DBesides, Burton was only executive producer, James Bobin was the director. Edited by Spaghetti
