After Earth kept most of the lead it had during the day after all. It's #1 but it is a hollow victory when you consider its opening day is well off of Hancock and MIB 3's opening day admissions. Not to mention that it's flailing domestically. Meanwhile, Hangover 3 had its own problems. It finished in 2nd despite being a sequel, and the #1 film being an original, and it was down 5% from Hangover 2's opening day admissions.

Aside from the top 2, Fast & Furious 6 sputtered 59% in its 3rd weekend. Not a bad hold with the amount of competition. Good hold for American Dreams in China. Pretty great for Pee Mak Phra Khanong but I think it's starting to lose its lustre and will continue to fall harder this weekend. Bad for A Wedding Invitation. Disaster for Long Weekend. OK for The Great Gatsby. Star Trek 2 and Iron Man 3 were bound to tumble hard this week. Very poor holds.

Do you think there will be sneak peek for Man of Steel? I just saw that there was one for Now You See Me. I am really hoping there is one for MoS because I don't think I can wait til the 27th.

There might be. Releasing films early on the Saturday before the official drop date seems to be all the rage these days. I hope so too. It's bad enough we have to wait 2 weeks because kids are still in school.

I am still scratching my head as to why UA delayed Now You See Me by 2 weeks.

Hangover 2 vs. Hangover 3 OW Admissions Comparison

  Daily admissions (OW)
  Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Total
Hangover 2 15,379 18,257 24,823 26,021 84,480
Hangover 3 14,607       14,607
Gap -772 -19,029 -43,852 -69,873

Hangover 3 can pull out an OW admissions victory over Hangover 2. If it doesn't, it will still beat Hangover 2 in gross.

After Earth pulled ahead of Hangover 3 for #1 but it will have to contend with Hangover 3's strong Friday. If it can weather the Friday storm, it should be able to come out on top. Hangover 3 is the bridesmaid again although it is up 24% in gross from Hangover 2. Fast & Furious 6 lost a lot of mileage this week with the top 2 openers overpowering everything. 3m will happen next weekend. Pee Mak Phra Khanong and American Dreams in China ended up in a virtual tie. Pee Mak Phra Khanong will pass 1m today while American Dreams in China sleepwalks toward $300,000. American Dreams in China is looking very good while Pee Mak Phra Khanong seems to be losing its shine. I think American Dreams in China will pull ahead of Pee Mak for #4 this weekend. The Great Gatsby did not have any direct competition heading into this weekend but it nearly crashed. It is looking to finish with 1.25m. Long Weekend was a disaster. It should make around $50,000 this weekend. Star Trek Into Darkness got chopped down this weekend but it passed 2m. It'll zip through 2.1m before exiting. People did not care about A Wedding Invitation and its gross will only reach $40,000. Iron Man 3 is quieting down now. It might gross 13.7m but its run will end there.

Good increase for Hangover 3. Its Friday pre-sales are -15% from Hangover 2's Friday pre-sales. After Earth had the weakest gain of the top 5. First real bad hold for Fast & Furious 6. Excellent for American Dreams in China. Incredible increase for The Great Gatsby. Pee Mak Phra Khanong is starting to lose the buzz. Terrible for A Wedding Invitation. Really bad for Star Trek 2 and Iron Man 3. Blech for Long Weekend.

Looking ahead toward Man of Steel, it will do really well but not as well as Iron Man 3. I think it will do 3.6m OW.I think it could have done better if they had released it next Wednesday. Next Wednesday is a holiday and distributors love to schedule their films around a holiday but I understand that they want to wait until kids are out of school before they release it. It sucks when studios schedule their tentpole films in early June in North America. It means that HK will get it delayed and then have to suffer some two tier films for a few weeks.Ticket prices have been released and they are more expensive than The Avengers and Iron Man 3. Wow, WB is going all out for Man of Steel.

Big news coming out of Universal. Despicable Me 2 will have special screenings beginning on June 29. FOX certainly won't be pleased by this development. Man of Steel won't be affected very much but of course, Despicable Me 2 will take away slightly from Man of Steel's potential gross.

Hangover 3 won Friday by a slim margin. The Hangover series has had weak Saturdays & Sundays in the past so if After Earth displays even a standard sci-fi increase, it will win this weekend. That mini increase for After Earth looks really bad compared to the rest. Fast & Furious 6 is slipping into freefall territory. Steady for American Dreams in China. Biggest surprise on Friday was Pee Mak Phra Khanong which saw a sluggish gain. The Great Gatsby had another great Friday increase. Awful for A Wedding Invitation and Long Weekend. Good increase for Star Trek 2 but its weekend hold is anemic. Horrible for Iron Man 3.

Most of the top 10 looked torpid. Maybe people are waiting for Man of Steel.

Hangover is the franchise that raised the potential grosses of comedies in the past few years. Before, they were hit or miss for the most part but Hangover built a solid fanbase in comedies. Now you see comedies becoming more and more popular in HK.

Look at Sacha Baron Cohen. Borat made $176,000 in 2007. Bruno made $218,000 in 2009 but The Dictator made $1.37m last year. Much of that increase wasn't because of market expansion or Sacha Baron Cohen fans.

Ted, Horrible Bosses, 3 Idiots plus the entire Hangover series show that there is a place for comedies here.

Close race between the top 2. Now You See Me sneaks are doing good. Fast & Furious 6 is falling apart. Acceptable for American Dreams in China. Not good for The Great Gatsby. Thomas & Friends: Blue Mountain Mystery enters the top 10 after two very slow days in pre-sales. This is Pee Mak's first bad hold. Star Trek 2 crashed this weekend. Ok for So Young special screenings.

Hangover 3 wins a very close day. Let's see where it stands against Hangover 2.

  Daily admissions (OW)
  Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Total
Hangover 2 15,379 18,257 24,823 26,021 84,480
Hangover 3 14,607 18,295 25,597   58,499
Gap -772 -734 40 -25,981

Hangover 3 has come back to take the lead over Hangover 2, however, Hangover 2 increased 5% on Sunday. It doesn't look very likely that Hangover 3 will be able to do the same.

Pretty bad increase for After Earth. I expected it for Hangover 3 but Hangover 3 managed to do a little better than what I thought. After Earth didn't get a weekend rise. Now You See Me did very well today. WOM seems stellar too. Horrific hold for Fast & Furious 6. OK for American Dreams in China. Pee Mak Phra Khanong is losing steam. So is The Great Gatsby. Painful for Star Trek 2. Massive increase for Thomas and Friends: Blue Mountain Mystery. It rose nearly 5x from Friday. Disastrous for Long Weekend.

Hangover 3 and After Earth switch places from Sunday. Weekdays this week will be slightly inflated due to the Wednesday holiday. It looks like the holiday is starting to take effect. Good to very good drops for Fast & Furious 6, American Dreams in China, Pee Mak Phra Khanong and The Great Gatsby. Poor for Long Weekend and A Wedding Invitation. Huge dives for Star Trek Into Darkness and Iron Man 3.

Holiday schedules are up and Now You See Me, So Young and Switch will be getting half-full day showtimes, affecting the rest of the field. To accomodate the new films, Hangover 3 is losing a screen, holdovers like The Great Gatsby, Pee Mak Phra Khanong are losing showings or new openers like Long Weekend/A Wedding Invitation gets their showings slashed.

Great write-up preview for MOS, Bluebomb  :D I know that competitions are tough and it will be hard, but I hope that it will exceed your forecast and cross $10M  :) But if it comes in around your estimates, that would already mark a great year for superhero movies in HK. Hopefully, Thor: TDW will do well also.

One interesting point about ticket prices from your preview. MOS ticket is priced $5 higher than IM3 and TA :o So who decide the price of a movie's ticket? I guess the studio?

I never knew the ticket prices could vary that much between movies in HK. Good for MOS though, with the competitions it'll face, the higher ticket price will come in handy  :D But could the high prices also lead to less admissions? Or it's not a problem for the HK-ers cause you're all rich and can afford to pay more to watch movies anyway  :P

The studio/distributor decides it from what I know. Theater chains have a say too but I think it ultimately comes down to the studio.

Higher prices have led to lesser admissions. Last year, The Hobbit clearly showed that people were not interested in HFR and higher ticket prices.

Thanks Bluebomb. I see, it's interesting that studios can influence ticket prices in HK, thank God they're not allowed to do that here. High ticket prices could turn me away from watching a movie, I'm a student so gotta save that money  :P

When do you plan on seeing MOS?
