Decent number for Joker. Abominable rebounded from its horrid Saturday number. Most of its showtimes were not affected. Ad Astra also bounced back from Saturday.

Joker's 5-day opening weekend estimate - $2,270,000

Joker went up from projections so that is good news. Relief probably set in for many theaters after many closures the past few days. I saw a lot of sellouts for Joker yesterday and today and it looks like theaters are retaining most of its Wednesday showtimes on Thursday.

Moderation:

I understand thinks in HK are a little ugly right now.

However politics do not belong in a box office thread other than mentioned how many theaters are closed.

Everything else needs to go into the politics section:

https://forums.boxofficetheory.com/forum/58-politics/

I don't think you understand that politics are directly affecting the box office right now. The majority of theaters have had to close on any given day due to riots and unrest. This isn't Donald Trump doing something controversial for the millionth time in 3 days. This is hitting every spectrum of life. 24 hour supermarkets have had to close the whole day. Transportation has been shut down. Theaters have had to shut down over safety concerns for staff and the general public. Many citizens are living in fear and rushing home early to avoid interacting with these hooligans. It pains me to see how much destruction and disruption they have caused to the city. Everyone has been affected.

Maybe when this quiets down, you can enforce the separate politics talk from box office but not when this is an escalating situation that has been getting worse by the day.

A little ugly? You clearly do not understand what is going on. I suggest you educate yourself or I would be willing to provide examples. Or better yet, look through the previous post that was deleted. Hong Kong is in crisis mode. It would be as if New York was kind of separate from America but still in America, ran its own box office and citizens threw a temper tantrum and uprooted the whole city in every area and promoted themselves as judge, jury and executioner.

If politics and box office weren't correlating with each other, I wouldn't comment, however, they are and I will report on this situation as it develops.

Please do not edit my titles again. I am only reporting on the situation as it is happening. Something that many people do not have access to or don't know where to look.

I understand just fine.  And it is perfectly acceptable to mention that the protests are affecting the box office.  However personal political opinion needs to stay out of it.

No.  I will enforce the rules of the forum at all times.  You do not get to decide if and when we suspend the rules.

I am plenty educated.  I was being as non-political as I could be.

We appreciate members who create and maintain Country and movie threads.  It takes a lot of work.

But lets be very clear.  This is not your personal thread where you get to make the rules.  As a forum Admin I will edit any title/post I deem necessary.  If any member has issues with my edits they can take it up with @Water Bottle.

Politics, other than mentioning how many theaters are closed, will not be discussed in this thread.  Bloody, riots, terrorists, thugs, brainwashed, links to protests/shootings are not allowed here.

You are welcome to open a thread in the Politics forum to discuss what is going on in Hong Kong.

But this thread will not be used to allow you to interject your person politics into the discussion.

You will follow the rules or ownership of the thread will be given to someone else.

Entering the Lunar New Year holiday, Hong Kong will see 6 new wide releases and 1 semi-wide release which is a Japanese anime. The Grand Grandmaster is expected to rule the box office of this period, expecting a HK$40 million-plus finish. The movie is starred, written and directed by stand-up comedian Dayo Wong, who is often seen as making fun of the one-party ruled China in some of his standup performances. In a week-old video to defuse allegations that his movie was a co-production, Dayo Wong claimed he self-financed the movie to make it purely HK and not succumb to Chinese rules and censorship. This seemed to have strengthened the support of his fans for the movie.

With the outbreak of coronavirus looming in central China, Hong Kong, located south of mainland China, is bracing for the worst to come. The city has seen 5 confirmed infected cases so far. Some large public festive events have been cancelled. Cinemas are largely unaffected for now.

Opening Jan 23

IMHO  only a matter of a few days until the theater closure in effect in China proper moves to Hong Kong.

Maybe. But I don't remember full closure of theaters during SARS in HK.

So far there have been 12 confirmed cases, 1 in severe condition and 11 mild. 11 of them are people who have recently traveled to the Wuhan area and 1 is a relative to an infected Wuhan traveler. HK people are pushing for the government to put a ban on visitors from China to stop the flow of infection and alleviate the burden on the public health system. Whether the puppet government in HK listens is another matter.  Current measures only reduce visitors from the mainland by 30%.

Most movie theaters re-opened on May 8 after 40 days of mandatory closure.

People remain cautious when it comes to moviegoing. Saturday numbers do not appear to show much improvement over the month of March:

Sat, May 9 - 22,000 tickets sold (#1 The Bridge Curse)
Sat, March 28 (6pm closing) - 10,000 (#1 Bloodshot)
Sat, March 21 - 19,000 (#1 The Hunt)
Sat, March 14 - 30,000 (#1 The Battle of Jangsari)
Sat, March 7 - 33,000 (#1 The Call of the Wild)
Sat, February 29 - 28,000 (#1 The Invisible Man)

Admissions for Saturday, May 9:
1. (NEW) The Bridge Curse (Taiwan) - 4,700
2. Bloodshot - 4,600
3. (NEW) A Good Doctor (France) - 2,200
4. (NEW) Trolls World Tour - 2,100
5. (NEW) Heilstätten (Germany) - 1,200
6. Happy Old Year (Thailand) - 1,100
7. (Re-issue) Better Days (HK/China) - 900
8. (NEW) Kamen Rider Reiwa: The First Generation (Japan) - 900
9. Mr. Zoo : The Missing VIP (South Korea) - 700
10. (NEW) Tora-san, Wish You Were Here (Japan) - 600

Trolls World Tour was unable to deliver a happy tune. It seems families largely avoided cinemas.

Horror movies continued to outpace other genres at the box office during the pandemic following the successes of The Invisible Man, The Platform, and The Hunt. The Bridge Curse continued the trend.
