It is because Cantonese is one of the official languages of Hong Kong, but not for mainland China(China except for Hong Kong and Macao,or .......)

Most people in Guangdong province of mainland China can speak Cantonese ,and Hong Kong is very close to this province.

Hong Kong was a British colony,and returned to China in 1997 with right of self-government under central government's supervision which means Beijing's.

So, as you can see Hong Kong has a total different social pattern from Mainland China.

Most movies produced in Hong Kong speak Cantonese, and are quite popular in Hong Kong & Guangdong Province.But movies produced in mainland China which speak mandarin often get very low boxoffice there.Although maindarin is one of the official language in Hong Kong, Hong Kong's citizens cater to speaking Cantonese and English.

In mainland China, Cantonese is a dialect .So only a small range of cinemas play movies produced in Hong Kong in Cantonese version.Take the example of me.I live in Shanghai.Shanghai is a world-class metropolis,thus, some cinemas do play movies in Cantonese.But I can't understand it,and most people here don't either.Therefore,the majority of cinemas choose to play Hong Kong's movies in dubbed mandarin version.

From what i've heard unlike in america. ppl in china actually like the expendables 3. They also love the apes film too. It wont be a huge drop for both films. So, $60 mills for ex 3 and $100 for dawn is a lock at this point.
