  1. I think the Wolverine has done really well, I didnt think the movie was very good and the US gross was underwhelming but overseas it has really done some solid money and the film could end up almost a 3.5 times multiplier compared to budget!

Surely TW3 has to be in some development phase whilst Jackman can still do physically do it

  2. It feels like there are already 542 threads on this topic, but I'll bite.

The Emperor's New Groove looked really strange at the time. Of course, it was well-received, had strong legs, and has grown a much wider following on home video; but when it was first released, it looked more crudely-designed and more slapstick than traditional Disney fare, which had a somewhat more dignified air to it (which was especially true in the '90s, when practically every non-Disney animated movie prior to The Rugrats Movie and The Prince of Egypt bombed in theatres). It also didn't help its case that it opened in the wake of a four-week run at #1 for The Grinch, which was also the highest-grossing release of the year.

Atlantis was one of Disney's early-2000s attempts to go in an edgier, more male-oriented direction. The common assumption is that they saw the obscene amounts of money The Phantom Menace made at the box office and in merchandising, and figured that targeting boys in particular was the way to go. The thing they were forgetting, however, is that at least half of the Disney empire is built on princesses and "girly stuff," so they were shutting out a decent portion of the potential kid audience by making a movie aimed so squarely at one gender. Even their movies with princesses in the leading roles still had plenty of male characters to advertise; that wasn't the case with the ladies in Atlantis, which had a love interest, a token woman on the expedition team, and nothing else. The cherry on top was that it opened a month after a little movie called Shrek, which was bringing in family audiences left and right en route to being the biggest hit of the summer.

Treasure Planet has a very similar explanation to Atlantis. It was for the boys only. Worse yet, it opened at the same time that the second Harry Potter movie was getting most of the kid business, and The Santa Clause 2 was a bigger hit than Disney had expected it would be. So as the last one to open, Treasure Planet was the odd one out. It also didn't do a whole lot to sell its story over its visuals.

Big Fish didn't really flop; it just wasn't a big hit (in fact, the same applies at least somewhat to Atlantis and Emperor's New Groove after international numbers are factored in). The trouble was that it was a tough movie to sell in two minutes or less.

The Haunted Mansion fell into similar territory as Big Fish as far as the performance goes. I would give a detailed analysis as to why it didn't make more money, but most of that analysis can be summed up in just one sentence: it looked like shit (and it was).

I agree with the succinct analysis above but I do feel for Treasure Planet and New Groove one of the factors that affected them was the decline in quality of the Disney products and the changes in the marketplace with computer animated films.

Tarzan was a big success but for me Mulan, Hercules and Hunchback are poor films.

  3. I liked it more than I thought I would, thanks to the Minions. However, without them, movie was crap. Lucy was annoyingly peppy and the girls did nothing in the plot. The villain was obnoxious and kinda racist, which pissed me off. The plot was just boring too; whenever the Minions weren't on screen, I was just waiting for them to show up, because they were moderately funny. All the other humor was just annoyingly juvenile, and I felt like it was a classic example of underestimating a child's intelligence. I give it a B for Minions, a D for the other elements to equal out to a C.

Agreed the girls did little, villain was weak, plot was poor and it all seemed cheap to me - I also gave the film a C, I think it will be interesting to see how DM3 does at the dom box office as I believe people may reconsider visiting this franchise again much like Shrek 3

  4. Superman's suit was one of his ancestor's. If you watch Kal and Jor-El converse in the ship. El shows Kal that their ancestor's set out on a journey across the stars, trying to find a home for them.

The empty pod is a nod to Supergirl.

El made the key before sending Kal on his journey. El would have made sure the key would work so why would a scout ship's key hole change shape? What would be the point of that?

Because Jonathan believed that if he did anything, it would change the world. The religions. The belief's. Jonathan didn't want Clark saving anyone on a bus so why would he change for himself? Throughout the comic book history. Jonathan never wanted Clark to show off his true self.

So the scout ship crew were from Supermans family?

So Supergirl is alive and well...somewhere?

The scout ship is 18 thousand years old and the key made by El 30 years ago seemingly worked in the 18 thousand year old space ship...I dont know about you but I expect Earths technology in 18000 years to be non compatible to what we have now thus my surprise in reference to Supermans key - but I take it from your response that El knew Superman would find the Scout Ship that he assumed was on the planet? (he didnt mention this to lara) and thus made a key that would work?

RE Tornado Superman had saved a few people prior to this and not worried - could he have not used his speed? would anyone have really seen?

  5. I'm not. Grown-Ups was one of his most popular films. They marketed this to the general masses unlike the "For Geeks Only" strategy of Pacific Rim (because that totally worked for Scott Pilgrim and Kick Ass). Saw people (especially women) light up when the trailer played. And after a recent string of under-performers/flops, Sandler was due another big hit.

Yeah I see your point I just felt that there was no clamour for the sequel, for my perspective the first one is ok but I did not feel there was a need for a sequel
