Not to be a Debbie Downer, but it is a big, glossy, expensive Disney film retelling a classic fairy tale in a genre where films like AIW made a killing. And following in the immediate wake of a MONSTER Disney hit. Happy, proud, whatever. But definitely not floored. Now if it broke a billion then I would be.
I'm floored when less traditional, indie style films catch on at the box office, a genuine surprise. Say like Silver Linings Playbook which I loved but was odd as hell.
But all other movies retelling a classic fairy tale wasn't a success like AIW, even Oz. If anything AIW is an exception not the norm. If Disney's live-action Cinderella is as much a success as Maleficent then we can make that kind of conclusion.

People expected Maleficent to be the highest grossing movie of the summer? To come close is good enough, people didn't even expect it to gross 200 million.

We're coming up on the 20th anniversary of the release of The Shawshank Redemption.
My favorite movie! Better look for the DVD and watch it again for the anniversary!
