  1. Then why'd they acquire it in the first place? At any rate, if they just want to make more money they could simply make BOM available for a monthly fee. Or just sell BOM to somebody else. I'm sure all the data will end up being accessible, but whether that's at IMDB/BOM, and whether it's still free, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

To kill the competition. Or they thought they could monetize it. And failed. Google is famous for acquiring stuff at hundreds of millions of dollars only to shut it down.

  2. My question is how do sites with much less traffic than BOM and alot more maintenance survive?

Could it be that Amazon is being too greedy?

There are websites more popular than BOM that don't make any money. The primary cost of operating BOM is not the software or server storage. Its the cost of collecting box office data. Anything that has been automated is dirt cheap. However the data gathering is expensive. Without people willing to pay for that data it will not survive.

  3. It shut down for the same reason the forums died down. There's no money in it. I imagine Amazon did an evaluation of how many paying customers would be there ( which unlike people saying they would subscribe rarely turns out that more than a 1000 people would be willing) and there is no way they could recover the cost via advertising. The executives will get the data from deadline or imdb as part of a corporate membership. There is no way an group of 1000 amateurs paying 10 dollars a year would be worth it to run a site like BOM.

Today the internet advertising model is dominated by the toothbrush model pioneered by Google. Only those things are viable that a vast section of people use at least once a day. 10,000 people checking BOM daily isn't viable for advertising.

If it survives its a part of IMDBPro.

  4. Finally saw HTTYD 2 and couldn't believe what I saw. For a company so dependent on franchises the movie is not made for American kids at all. Where's the toilet humor for young boys? And what was that with the entire 20 minute sequence of Hiccup's mom and dad?

They seemed to have given up on the domestic market and only concentrated on overseas for this movie unlike the first one.

  5. But then she'll probably have none in Season 6. Unless Winds comes out by then.

    They aim to roughly show

    WOW

    in Season 6

    My theory

Sansa and Rickon are the only 2 likely to be rulers if a Stark comes back to power. Jon even a Targaryen will be a non factor. That's what GRRM is setting it up to be. It will be the big reveal and then dismissed as a non factor. Bran and Arya won't be happy being in one place. If this is based on the War of the Roses Sansa is the closest character we have to Elizabeth of York. That strongly suggests her being the Queen of the North or of Westeros. A lot of the Sansa fandom hopes that she will finally be a player. She will be important and may even rule but will still be a non player at the end of the book series. The TV show is changing it so that it seems like Sansa becomes a player. That suggests to me that Sansa is going to be around till the end and maybe even rule.

  6. Also why the fuck did they do the guest acting awards off camera? Would've much rather seen Uzo's speech than The Amazing fucking Race brigade or some writers.

There has to be a certain quota of writing and directing emmys speeches to be broadcast if they want to show clips from the shows during the telecast. This is a part of union negotiations between the academy and the guilds. All acting speeches can't be shown without wrecking the quotas.  Part of the reason why both Oscars and Emmys tend to be snoozefests vis a vis the Globes which is concerned about maximum celebrity wattage alone. In recent times the Emmys have had a hard time even getting the networks on board to broadcast the show.

  7. So now they got their pay rise. The 3 top actors will make $1m per episode for 3-4 seasons plus backend.

So Kaley will make about $90m in the next 3 years while her professional tennis player husband has carreer earnings of $1m .

That can't work out for them. In 2014 Ryan Sweeting has made $156,- in the one challenger match he has lost. Kaley Cuoco earns $800,- per second on the show.

Probably but he can enjoy being the boy toy till she keeps him, if he knows whats good for him he'll be the doormat. I am sure he has some money mentioned in the prenup also plus spousal support will be there too for him in his future as he gets a share of her married life earnings.

  8.  What an ignorant comment. Many Hispanic people are also white. To us, it's less about skin tone and more about the blood inside us. I'm a white Hispanic for instance.

I know that. However in this thread  people are discounting Cameron Diaz or Charlie Sheen as authentic Hispanic actors because they are white Hispanics.

  9. Non-white gay guy here. I oppose diversity for diversity's sake. Quite often the problem with putting together a diverse cast is the eggshells that the creators have to navigate through. Put a flaming gay character and hear the howls of how media only represents gay characters as femmes. Put him as a serial killer and have GLAAD protest the demonization of gay men. Make him a regular dude  then he doesn't stand out at all and is not any different than having him as a straight guy. Make a movie about a gay superhero and very few will come to watch the movie and suffer huge losses. If I don't how to present a gay guy accurately on screen that can sell tickets I am better off not putting him on screen.

The first rule of writing is that you write about things and situations that you know.

If I know about white suburban culture how will I write about a kid from the inner cities.

For example if Michael Bay put his name in front of a Tyler Perry movie he would be hounded in BET or The Root for perpetuating black stereotypes while Tyler Perry can write those characters because he's black.

The problem with casting minority characters while you are white is how to make them realistic without them being stereotypical. If you can't get both right you are better off with token casting as a sidekick or not casting them at all. It's not worth the extra baggage.

  10. What liberal Hollywood not liking diversity? While all the time hollering at conservatives to be more inclusive.

Quite honestly diversity is crap. If Woody Allen only makes movies about neurotic Jews why should I force him to introduce black characters if he is not comfortable writing about that scenario.

Plus the problem is if someone gives a non-white person even something remotely stereotypical the PC police will be coming up in droves to protest misrepresentation. Therefore in places where Hollywood actually represents non-whites as goons , terrorists etc. they turn out to be pawns of  the main villain who is white making them a replaceable character ultimately.

If Hispanics want to be represented in Hollywood they would have to do a Tyler Perry. Make Hispanic films for themselves and sell it to Hispanics.

  11. I don't buy this theory of whitewashing. Hollywood is populated with ultra liberal Democrats. Surely they can't be racist. :D :D :D :D

Seriously though , Hollywood will do whatever makes a profit. If that means shooting in Canada for tax breaks while complaining that the US govt should raise taxes for the rest of the people or casting a black Idris Elba as the whitest of Norse gods.

If anything they go out of their way not to offend anyone who's not a straight white guy. The chances of me getting mugged by an all white gang or an all black gang or an all Hispanic gang is much more higher than the multiethnic multicultural gangs that they show in Hollywood movies.
