  1. While I'm happy Matt's back as Bourne, I'm not too sure I'm happy that Greengrass is back.

Don't get me wrong, all 3 Bourne films are great and all, but Supremacy and Ultimatum were really frustrating to watch due to the over-usage of the shaky-cams (all action scenes the camera was shaking, and even non-action scenes where characters were just talking, the camera wasn't still).

  2. I thought Lucy had one of the best trailers of the year; I'm not surprised it had a big OW, but that 3x multiplier amazes me... I mean... it wasn't necessarily a great movie...

I expected OS to pull in decent numbers, but nothing over 200-225 tbh.

3x multiplier?  Wow.  I just heard the movie was alright, so I didn't know what to make of it.  But that sure is surprising.

  3. Yes Dracula does have some markets left (I'm not sure which ones specifically)

Hansel and Gretel cost 83 million according to BoxOffice.com to put that in perspective :)

I see, so $166 million benchmark was passed.... (with it being $226 million)......Seems it did much better than what was expected LOL.

    Copied and pasted from imdb.com:

    Chile                   16 October 2014
    Colombia            16 October 2014
    Czech Republic  16 October 2014
    Slovakia              16 October 2014
    Thailand              16 October 2014
    Finland                17 October 2014
    Poland                17 October 2014
    Vietnam              17 October 2014
    Cambodia           21 October 2014
    Brazil                   23 October 2014
    Hungary               23 October 2014
    Spain                    24 October 2014
    Italy                       30 October 2014
    Japan                    31 October 2014
    Paraguay            14 November 2014

Several markets, but I only see Spain, Italy, Japan as the major markets left.

  4. This feels like such a compliment :D as there are people on here who have been following box office for 10+ years, and me with 2 years I always felt like the baby

To green light a sequel, a movie has to make more than just it's break-even point. 200M would be break even, whereas 250+ would make Universal consider sequels. My guess is that they'll incorporate Luke Evans in the crossover movies, and if he gains popularity there he will get his sequel. Dracula is a very popular character, and so I'm sure Universal WANTS to do it, they're just waiting for the long-term money making prospects (what can we do to make sure the sequel makes more money than the original?)

Yeah, by the way, how much did Hansel and Gretel cost including its marketing costs?  I know that production budget itself is $50 million, but don't quite know how much it was including marketing.

Also, aren't some territories still waiting for Dracula to be released?  I remember Japan as being one of them, with it being released very late October.

  5. Have you been on the site Box Office Mojo? They are a really good and extremely popular source (just see The Speakeasy for confirmation of that ;) )

They'll do like "vs" where they'll compare two or more movies that are similar in their box office intake or genre. Right now, they have Dracula in the same category as Hansel and Gretel and Jack the Giant Slayer (doing better than the former, a few million behind the latter) so domestically, Dracula is set (if it continues on this pace) between 55 and 65 million $.

Overseas, it's at 63 million so far. I don't know any stats for a particular country, but it seems to be playing similar to Jack and Hansel and Gretel which made 135 and 225 million overseas; so expect an overseas total between those numbers.

The general rule for a movies success is if it makes more than 2x it's budget (in Draculas case $70M, 105M including marketing) so really, if they made 200WW (which will happen) that will be the break even point, and anything else on top is profit. So to answer your question, Dracula Untold is doing decent/solid buisness considering its budget (the reason Jack was a flop was its budget was 200M instead of 70)

How long have you been following Box Office for James? Are you new to this, or have you been at it for a while? I personally have been since Wreck it Ralph opened in North America (so almost 2 years).

I was just made aware of Box office Mojo couple of days ago, and at least once every day, try to check out the movie Box Office to see what are hits and what are flops / misses.

2 x the budget?  So I'm guessing Dracula needs to make at least $210 Million worldwide for there to be any chance of a sequel.  I'm hearing a lot of people say it's ok / average, but not great (with Box office results), so was kinda feeling bummed about it.  Hopefully drops will be very gradual over the next couple of weeks until other blockbusters arrive, and it becomes a hit that Studio heads will take notice to greenlight a sequel.

I'm really new to this - been following the Box office for about 2~3 weeks now?  So I guess in terms of knowledge (among Box office info and other stuff), you guys are more of veterans level , and I would be at baby level.

  6. The trailer did get me intrigued.  Sure, some aspects of it felt a bit dumb and unrealistic (maybe that was intended by the filmmakers), but it's always a pleasure to see Keanu in these kickass roles (and from the looks of the trailer it seems the role fits him nicely).  And the reviews are coming back really positive, so I guess it must be better than the average tired-old revenge flick.

And guys, he's also gonna be starring in a new TV show "Rain" which is a ten-episode action series (The directors for this film are the producers of the new series).

  7. I never actually thought of it like that, comparing it to the Hulk. The difference I could see is that even the negative reviews of Dracula said Evans was good, and the good reviews (most of them anyways) say he was the best part. I don't think Hulk was viewed in the same way, and I think (hope) Evans is an "easier" actor to work with than Norton.

Well, I think he's an easier actor (or better wording would be he gets along well with others, e.g. staff, other cast members, studios etc) too.  But I don't think having role in the crossover will guarantee that he will be in any (possible) sequels.  I think Marvel is still feeling the aftereffects of The Incredible Hulk, that they are active in all other projects (such as Doctor Strange movie etc), but are shirking away from an actual Incredible Hulk/Avengers sequels.

Heck, only roles Ruffalo had got in MCU was first Avengers movie, minor cameo in Iron man 3, and Age of Ultron.  Not sure when an actual Hulk solo film will be released at this rate.

Even with an actual sequel, the only actors/actress they really need are Evans, Dance and Gadon right?  I guess it all comes down to numbers.  How well they do.  Guess we'll have to wait and see (personally hoping it really does well in overseas.......I'm not too hopeful with the US domestic numbers)

  8. If Universal needs to blame someone for the movie's problems, they should blame producers. If you want an PG-13 movie, then you shoot a PG-13 movie. You don't shoot an R movie and then cut 30+ minutes of it out. No doubt some of those scenes were important and with the budget they couldn't go back and reshoot them all.

And you don't market an action film as a horror film if you expect it to get good reviews. The first thing the critics will attack is its lack of horror.

I think a lot of studios are trying to play it safe with the whole PG-13 rating.  Sure, PG-13 is not a guarantee it will be bad, but it's not necessarily a box-office magnet either (I shudder to think how Terminator Genisys will perform, since it's been told it's PG-13)

I think a lot of people were expecting an R-rated film since it's Dracula (like the Coppola film?).  But news articles by director, the cast etc clearly stated this is more of a family action adventure film.  And the trailer didn't show any signs of it being R-rated.  So I guess I wasn't put off by it being PG-13 as much as other people were.  But oh well, that's just me.

  9. I agree that the movie had its share of problems. I didn't particularly love it, but I saw a lot of potential in the film that if they try again with maybe I different director/screenwriter, a sequel could be really good! Luke Evans was amazing in it, and I'm sure Universal knows this. I would be so disappointed in them if they rebooted this.

Kinda reminds you of what they did with Marvel Cinematic Universe's Hulk right?  Edward Norton was Banner/Hulk in The Incredible Hulk, but that didn't do so well in the Box office (if I remember correctly) and after negociations broke down for him to star in the first Avengers movie, they recast him with Ruffalo.

I have nothing against Ruffalo (he did an okay job in Avengers), but personally (and I might as well be in the minority here and many MCU movies forums), I wish Marvel didn't recast Banner/Hulk role (despite Norton's reputation of being tough to work with actor).

That's the thing I fear for this.

  10. I'm guessing you really liked the movie then ;)

I did, despite it's faults.  I've been kinda sick of vampire films such as Underworld, Blade, Twilight where vampires are basically like enhanced humans who suck on human blood.  No other vampire traits whatsoever shown.  Yes some of those films I like (I liked the first 2 Blade films), but if I had to objectively look at it from portrayal of Vampires, those films did not do that very well..

    @ DAJK,

Thanks for the welcome!  My numbers $130 million was from the Deadline article I saw about 2~3 days ago.  I tried to find the link for that article again, but the article is down (Deadline may have pulled it down?) .  So I guess your number of $105 million is more correct.

Despite its faults, I have really enjoyed DU, and really wish to see a sequel for this to see where the story goes for the main characters (Vlad, Mina, and Master Vampire).  Having no sequel, but a crossover isn't a total loss, but I would be a bit disappointed, and if situation becomes that no sequel and no crossover (i.e. they decide to completely reboot Dracula), then I would be greatly saddened.

I really hope you're right with your predictions DAJK.  It would be really good to see this film do well.

  12. Hi Guys, I'm new to the forums here, and I'm pleased to meet you all.

How much would Dracula Untold need to make to be a success and sequel to get green-lighted?  Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters did pretty poor in domestic box office (US) but did really well for its overseas numbers, so sequel was announced.

I wonder if Dracula can get similar results.

(I read somewhere that including the budget + advertising and distribution fees DU cost $130 million, I wonder if this is true).
