Which is sad. Universal would have been perfect for this.
Paramount could have used this overseas win

Does this have a Chinese date?
Also what I tend to see with Valerian is this.
Me: "I am so excited for Valerian!"
Friend: "What?"
Me: "The movie Valerian, coming out in 2 weeks"
Friend: "Never heard of it."
Me: *shows trailer*
Friend when Luc Besson's name or Fifth Element pops up during the trailer: "Oh this guy!" "Omg, Fifth Element! Loved that movie!" "He did Fifth Element?!"
Friend when trailer is done "That looks really cool, I might have to see it now."
If that movie had a better date (August) and more aggressive marketing, it could be a solid win for STX and Besson.

Think one of the trade reports said that the only reason Besson went with STX for the EuropaCorp slate is because they were 'financially attractive'
Thanks Bad Moms
I think that translates to "No other company wanted on board and STX was the best I could do."

Valerian can also easily be marketed as something you need to see in theaters (with the 3D angle likely being pushed in marketing). A lot of reactions have mentioned how the 3D is great. It's very easy to see how that will get near unanimous praise in the reviews.
Because of the early reaction, I am choosing to shell out the extra $2.50 to see it in 3D

Very nervous for reviews. They will kind of make or break the film. Good reviews will definitely give it the push it needs and the studio confidence to market the f out of this over the next 2 weeks.

I really hope this can do well and by well I mean do Luc Besson's Fifth Element and Lucy numbers (120M). A Fifth Element adjusted for inflation gross (122M) should be the goal.
Opening weekend: 20-25M
Domestic- 55-75M
Overseas- 200-250M
Reviews- 60-70%

Would be crazy to see Kong take over PR this weekend. Kong will most likely take GITS next week too. 170m slowly coming into play for Kong! I wish it would have enough gas to get to 175 so BATBs opening weekend wouldn't beat it's total DOM gross.
I feel like with no competition in March, Kong could have reached Godzilla's number.

Very happy with that Kong number. Hoping 170M can happen

Did we hear a budget for this?
No, I can't picture it higher than 50M
I would guess a budget around 30-40 million for this.
-
This can't bomb. Disappoint yes, but bomb no
According to The-Numbers.com and Forbes Magazine the budget is only $102 million. This for sure will at least break-even when you factor overseas in the equation.

I'm pretty sure Kong has passed Godzilla in the dailys.
It has a while ago

So it is at 147.8 million right now. With the Godzilla multiplier from here out it will end with $160-$161 million.
With basically zero competition next weekend, it should easy do more than that.
Also it's overseas gross has surprised Godzilla!!

Just stop at any burger joint is America. You will spend less than 5 minutes there and here somebody say "OMG best f*cking burger ever!" or "F*ck this is there worst thing I have ever eaten!"
