Whatever it takes to get a sequel
go fudging go!
-
Can you provide a link to authenticate that? I've only seen the names of five companies: Atlas, Blizzard, Legendary, Universal, and Tencent. Of those, only Legendary (owned by Wanda) and Tencent have Chinese backing.
Intro to Chinese version of the film had the following
Universal
China Film co ltd
Tencent pictures
Taihe entertainment production
H.Brothers
Legendary
Blizzard Entertainment

Just realized that Warcraft opened lower than Fantastic Four. What the hell? Even though reviews weren't kind, the 5M+ current subscribers and the over 12M subscribers at its peak should have at least let it beat the OW of one of the most troubled productions ever.
Water Bottle mentioned earlier that the movie was 5 years too late, I agree. The same movie coming out in 2011 would have probably launched a huge domestic franchise. It was in development since 2010, so clearly Blizzard knew it as well.
Seems like all the video game movies are coming out years later than they should have. Warcraft, Angry Birds and Assassins Creed are all about 3-5 years late to capitalize on the game popularity.
Sadly I've seen chats in the WoW community, many have watched it, but the high quality bootleg that's out there.. It's sad how so many Warcraft fans have streamed it instead of buying ticket

So has the international numbers been updated for this weekend yet? Or does the recent number include the second weekend of UK etc

Finishing second is Universal's Warcraft with an estimated $10.7 million, a better start than expected as it is now looking at an opening around $27 million or so, but the story remains its status in China, which is now around $145 million after just four days. The film's international total is now estimated at $276.9M as of end of day yesterday.
I wonder what magic WW number it needs to get a sequel

If all 5.5 current WoW subscribers went to see this thats only like 55m in grosses.
there was a total of 100 million paid unique subscribers during it's tenure. meaning that some played for months, some for years and there was a certain rotation. Also, there is the warcraft 1, 2 and 3 franchise that drew millions as well as Hearthstone that is based on warcraft that has 30 million active users. Just because someone stopped playing the game, doesn't mean that they don't want to see the movie.
As far as the 5.5M subscribers, think about this, the game has been out for over 12 years and still has a freaking 5.5M subscribers! people were still using playstation 2 when WoW came out! ps3 didn't come out yet! tell me a game that came out at that time they have that many active players(let alone paying players)

Well, the good news is that you're *extremely* unlikely to be our worst predictor, ever.
we'll see lol
I do think that everyone is completely underestimating the fanbase in the US. Also, Blizzard Entertainment has some of the most loyal fans you can ever imagine. they have 3 franchise games(4 now with Overwatch) and they have their own gigantic event called Blizzcon. No other gaming company has ever been able to do that. Maybe no one will show up.. I think it will open strong and perhaps fall quickly.

I enjoyed the movie. I wish Jones would have taken his time to tell the story. I think they didn't find the best way to present the world initially. It wasn't a problem with me cause I know the lore and warcraft so I really enjoyed it but I can understand how people can get confused and not get attached to the characters.
I also think marketing wise, they should've done short stories weeks and months before the movie comes out to hype and give a little background on who the orcs are, where they initially came from, etc. same with the humans. It would've been a very unique way to market.
I give it a B. I honestly think Warcraft should be a tv series if budget were to permit it, there is so much story and lore that it is extremely hard to put it into a 2 hour film.
