Frozens is pretty much Disney's 2010 equivalent of say Lion King or Beauty and the Beast.

They've released plenty of other good films before and since in the 2010s, but you see more people talk about Frozen still.

Yes,it was Frozen mania among children in a way that I've never seen for other films.

A Disney Princess team-up movie would probably be the film to dethrone Avatar at the worldwide box office methinks.

It's the kind of film that would fail in the antagonist department.

  2. I'm sold too. It's an exquisitely shot trailer.

I have not seen a lot of is recent output (Macbeth, Assasin creed, Slow west, light between oceans, trepass against us and just the beginning of song to song)

But Frank, Steve Jobs and magneto were quite different character and far from auto pilot (particularly Jobs).

Trespass against us,Slow West,Steve Jobs,Macbeth,Song to Song,TLBO.. these are all completely different -and very good- performances. Even in Alien Covenant he plays two androids and his work is not like his work in Prometheus. David has different traits and Walter is not comparable to David in Prometheus. He did a great job.

Incompetent filmmaking and storytelling getting refused by audiences.

    What a schocking development.

LOL BO charts tell another story..

At this point, out of the X-Men films, Michael Fassbender 's presence in a film is as toxic and lethal as xenomoph s blood.

    Ridley Scott was very wise

These jokes are getting lazy, tbh. I get that you don't like the direction taken by Scott but, funnily enough, without his "toxic presence" this movie wouldn't have had the reviews it got.  Waterston was actually the "face" of the movie,if we -seriously- want to complain about marketing and BO draws, which doesn't even make sense to begin with.

Sorry, but Blomkamp has not had a good batting average lately either.

He has had two box office and critical duds in a row. He is now in danger of being in the One Hit Wonder territory.

At least Ridley Scott can boast of a huge box office and critical hit recently with "The Martian".

No doubt that "Prometheus" did hurt "Covenent" at the box office. Best Fox can hope for is a modest profit on it's investment.

I don't think that's the reason,or the main reason. Deadline's analysis is spot on. You've the franchise fans who are going to see it in any case. We can assume the same for those who're interested in this genre. But there's definitely confusion for the casual moviegoer. This opening is obviously underwhelming, but I've never expected much more than 40M in the first place. Prometheus was really an exception. It was treated as an event and the fact that it was promoted as an original sci-fi thriller appealed to a wider audience.

In my summer game notes, I put it at 2,250 theaters opening week for $4,000 PSA.  9.00 Opening weekend + Previews for 35M total.  The main competition will be All Saints from Sony/Columbia which I have coming in higher than Tulip Fever.  Crown Heights got added, but it is distributed by IFC and is an Amazon Studios feature.  Expect a limited rollout for that.

I doubt it will get a wide release.

How bad can the actual film be though?

I don't think it's awful. At worst it's boring and badly edited. I bet it has been re-edited a million times-in the best Weinstein's fashion possible.

    Some reactions here:

Another person who watched it two years ago said that she liked it but it was tonally weird.

The total reported by Numero is in local currency. BOM reported the total in USD, which is a 79% drop from the $6.7M Prometheus brought in. Exchange rates are noticeably worse than in 2012, so in AUD, Alien Covenant dropped about 40% from Prometheus.

Thanks! So,they calculated these drops in USD. I don't understand why they're not in local currency. It'd make more sense.
