Not all discounts are 50%, that tends to be the max but at my theater it's more like 30%. Even with all 50% discounts (very very high estimate) and assuming 40% of theaters (very very high estimate) gave the discount and assuming that demand would have stayed the same without the discount the difference would be 7.2 million, so the true difference was likely much less than that.

The Marcus Theater we went to has the same tickets we paid $5 for priced at $13

I'd be surprised if even 5% of theaters gave ffm the Tuesday discount. Tuesday and Wednesday openers don't get it, never have.

The best theater in Chicago's Southwest Suburbs did.  It is a Marcus Theater and would assume all Marcus Theaters also had $5 Tuesdays. So that is over 1000 screens.

  3. Been awhile. Have to say CM is looking to have a good opening weekend. We are seeing it today.  Also and finally isnt it now clear that RT audience is a totally useless score unless you want to use it to measure childish people trying to create discord on social media. So many people afraid of girls.

TLJ isn't going to be developing "magic" legs. Mixed WOM at best right now.

I think the actual WOM is better then people think. I think the effort to bring the RT audience score has slowed its BO, but as more and more people actually see it and spread WOM at work, talking to family and friends the true WOM is positive.  Of all the people I have talked to only two are on the fence about TLJ. I know it is anecdotal, but it sure seems like everyone I talk to about TLJ liked it or loved it.

  5. I see people bringing up  MoS, BvS, SS, JL and Wonder Woman comparing to TLJ and future Star Wars movies. Sorry doesnt compare. There is 1 major reason Wonder Woman did so well and the rest didnt. The quality all around on the DCEU movies. I wanted them to do well. They didnt and the fact of the matter it is because of the vision and quality control.  WB with the DCEU went with movies that are a mess. I liked 300 and to a lessor extent Watchment, but his vision of the DCEU is a murky, dark, bloody mess. Nothing visually appealing. BvS and Suicide Squad were just plain ugly to look at (Except Margot) the sound design was a mess, the music was uninspiring.  It wasnt the idea of DC comics its what was done with them. It wasnt any sort of fatigue.

TLJ hasnt had the blowout week from public WOM. Its weird because private WOM I havent seen the same reaction. Saw it again last night and the theater loved it. That of course is group reaction. When I talk to my family, friends and co-workers no one disliked it. No one can make me believe when I read an article that complains about not getting the back story on the color of C3PO arm in TFA not getting answered in TLJ that there isnt a group of people that want to find something to complain about.

Here's a decent place to start (SPOILERS IN THIS ARTICLE OBVIOUSLY):

    https://www.thewrap.com/10-plot-threads-force-awakens-set-last-jedi-blew-off/

That article is silly in many ways. Come on C3PO red arm and Phasma for instance. Did the original trilogy ever explain C3PO silver leg. What about Boba Fett back story? I could go into others, but spoilers. I will say this some of those were TFA responsibility and some have EP9 still left to explain. Others are either taken care of already or dont matter. Especially 1 which was answered and TFA told us the answer along with JJ Abrams in April 2016.

    Its never that simplistic.

When the director takes everything set up by JJ in SW7 and throw out the window to seem edgy and cool and says fuck off to fans.

    What you thin would happen?

I want to know what he threw out the window. People say general stuff like this and never back it up.

I would argue that TLJ drew the interest of more than enough people.

If you have endless articles, YT videos and social media buzz about people angry about this movie it will spread the bad buzz.

I do believe the Twitter social media buzz and YouTube has had an effect. Weird thing on my Facebook feed not much talk at all. I guess on Facebook we are afraid to reveal spoilers.  In real life I have talked to about 25-30 people directly about TLJ and not one dislike. Various levels from like to love. My middle son really cant stand the Poe/Holdo relationship, but he really like TLJ.

Well that's not the ONLY reason it isn't breaking records. It also made less on the weekend than Force Awakens. What's the excuse for the weekend gross? Deadline idiots.

Anyway that data seems odd. So 30% were off Monday and 17% Tuesday. That is a strange pattern. I can't wait until next week so this discussion will end. The thing needs some absolutely unbelievable numbers to beat Avatar at this point.

Some schools particularly colleges give a day off between regular class days and first day of finals.

Not sure if this has been posted but much less schools were off yesterday than on Monday. Wonder if there are Tuesday comps for schools off between this, RO, and TFA.

But if any cynics are wondering why Last Jedi isn’t busting past Tuesday records it’s only because there are still plenty of schools in session. Yesterday, ComScore reported 17% K-12 schools out. Today that figure jumps to 24%, then 39% on Thursday and 61% on Friday.

Wow didnt realize they had statistics for that.

Yeah, the hook is it's the conclusion to Rey, Ren and crew's storylines.

Yeah how someone can say TLJ doesnt have hooks. In addition to the conclusion to this story. It is conclusion to saga that likely wont be back for 10 years. It also has the benefit if being very unpredictable as to what is going on in Ep9. One think TLJ did was make it so Ep9 will be very different. We knew much of what would happen in ROTS. We knew what we expected answers to in ROTJ. What can we say we expect to find out in Ep9?  All I can say for certain about EP9 is that we will have a confrontation.

Obviously there are people that don't like it.  The problem I have with the audience score, was that, didn't it drop below 60% on Friday?  How often does the score drop that hard, and that fast, in the middle of opening day!!

Add in the bogus Star Wars reviews popping up on other movies, and it's clear that while there are people that don't like it, it got a more than a little help dropping the score down as much as possible.

Over the weekend CNN had a report on about the RT audience score controversy. They had someone at a theater and they were asking people as they left and they said they couldnt find anyone who didnt like the movie. That is my experience as well. My family and extended family all varied from liked to loved. None negative. The most negative comments from my middle son who really didnt like Holdo and how Poe wasnt told things.  Still he liked TLJ and cant wait to see it again when my sister gets in town. Have met no one who would give it a score that RT would take as negative.

  13. Holiday effect has not kicked in yet. In reality schools are in finals week. We were going to go see TLJ again last night. We didnt because my HS son had to study for finals today. He has finals today, tomorrow and Friday morning. That is the case all over. Because of Christmas falling next week schools are out later.

Well, there are people giving it a 4, 5 grades too...

    I gave it a 6/10, but I think it could be 6,5/10

So you arent trying to over influence the number. My point exactly. A 1 will over influence more then a 10 will because even the worst of the real reviews are like 2/4 stars.

You fail to see the point that both sides have trolls, and that means bots ( if they really exist ) are from both sides. It goes both ways.

BVS was already at 9.1 during the day of its release. That means people were giving tons of 10, and obviously the movie is not a 10/10 movie. This happens to every movie. Then the score dropped a lot after the movie got released.

It's not a big deal. You can't be biased. I didn't love the movie, so I won't pretend that everyone who loved it, is a bot. The same case applies to those who loved it. Just because people hated it ( there are people who hated ), that doesn't mean they're trolls or bots.

By the way, the average critic score on RT is 8.2/10, which is far away from the 31.000 10 grades this movie got on imdb, lol.

I am fully aware that people may over inflate a movie purposefully. Still by all measures a movie of the quality of TLJ is far closer to 10 then it is to 1. Even if you dont like it or dont like the direction it took. I can see you giving it a 5. No way it should be a 1. 1s are for complete disasters. Things that should never ever be released to theaters. And I mean Trolls, not bots. Trolls from the classic sense of the word. People trying to create arguments.

According to imdb, more than 31.000 users gave The Last Jedi a 10/10, which is hilarious.

According to imdb, 7900 users gave it a 1/10, which is also hilarious.

If there are bots, obviously there are more bots that gave it a 10 than bots who are downvoting it.

Ask yourself which is more likely a trolling operation. A high quality high budget film critically acclaimed film getting 10/10 from people or that same film getting 1's.

Yeah guys, imbd, rt and metacritic is 100% bots and trolls. If we look at the top 1000 users on Imdb, the ones who have legit accounts and gave thousands of ratings to film, it shows just how trolled the 7.8 score is.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2527336/ratings?demo=top_1000_voters

    oh... wait

Think it indeed is being trolled. You may not have liked it, but no way is TLJ a 1 out of 10. That is trolling period end of sentence.

Most schools are already off and go back on either January 3rd or 4th.

I dont know any kids off yet. My middle son goes to Michigan State U and has always been an early break college and even MSU last final was just Friday. Dont know any grade schools or high schools in Illinois that are on break yet. My youngest son High School break doesnt start until next Friday at noon when Finals end.

Depends on how it's reported to the studio, no?

How is a Moviepass "ticket sale" reported anyway?

The way Moviepass is you use the app to indicate the movie you are going to see at a theater. Like the 9PM showing of Last Jedi. The app then puts money on a MasterCard Debit card that you walk up to the box office and use to pay for a ticket instead of a any other credit/debit card or cash. It is just like any other ticket purchase. Just the only identity that puts money on the card is MoviePass. If ticket costs $10 MoviePass puts $10 on the card. If it is $20 MoviePass puts $20 on the card.

  20. Think Moviepass will have any measurable effect? Our whole family got them in November. Two of used last night to go see TLJ a second time. May very well see it again tonight with Moviepass. Winter is dreary in Chicago. My sons and I intend to use Moviepass a many times to see TLJ.

  21. How much of an effect will Christmas date have on TLJ boxoffice. Students havent gotten out yet and just to give examples of my kids and friends. For TFA my oldest son was going to University of Wisconsin-Madision and opening night (Friday) was last day of exams. We drove from Chicago to Madison to see it after his last exam ended at 8PM. We went to 9PM show. All University of Wisconsin schools follow same final exam schedule. This year the schools final exams started yesterday and go through 21st. They even have exams today and tomorrow. My middle son goes to Michigan State and exams this year ended yesterday, luckily my son just had a paper to hand in yesterday. Last year and the year before they ended the Friday before Rogue One opened. My youngest son High School finals last year ended opening day of Rogue One and year before the opening day of TFA.  Close family friends, who we are seeing TLJ with tomorrow, son goes to University of Illinois and his last final is tomorrow.  Think this will cause better numbers going forward?
