I think it looks fine. There's like 6 shots lol. I think the point of this is to basically bring awareness to people that the movie exists. In that sense, it did its job. Other than that, I will agree it didn't inspire much enthusiasm for those skeptical of it. But again, there wasn't much to see in the first place, so I can't say it justifies any negative emotions either.

Already seeing critiques that this movie is "hiding that it's a musical" and criticizing the acting. Absolutely wild takes over 57 seconds of footage. For anyone to not know that the movie of Wicked is a musical, even at this point, is to be purposefully obtuse. It's one of the most famous musicals of all time, and the biggest A-list star in the movie is primarily known as a singer. And they even have the signature song being sung over the trailer. Just because we don't see it coming from Elphaba's lips, suddenly it's being hidden?
I think this will be a big hit, but the critiques and discourse are extremely "go touch grass" on this one already.

Watched the trailer. After the reactions here I expected something much more cringe-worthy. But the animation looked fine to me and the "annoying sidekicks" elements were fairly subdued compared to the reactions. I suspect a big hit.

So how much Lin Shaye we getting? Just the posthumous video relaying whatever exposition is needed?
I'd guess she'll be in the videos, then show up in The Further during the finale to help win the fight with the demon. It'll be the Insidious equivalent of Black Panther walking through the portal.

I'm excited for this. Recently watched all of the previous Insidious movies forgetting this was coming out this year. I'm glad it seems we are getting a sense of resolution with the red-faced demon and Dalton, and how cool that the kid actor is now grown up and playing him again. I feel like that's rare that they didn't have to re-cast the kid who's now an adult. And hell yeah Rose Byrne is back.
I loved the original when it was released, I've been sort of 'meh' on the sequels, but someone earlier in this thread is right that they are incredibly watchable. Bringing us back to the main characters of the original makes me excited and can serve as a fitting conclusion to the series, if need be.

I think the movie is clearly a comedy with horror overtones. There were more laughs than gasps/screams in the two showings I've been to (both of which were full), and I that tone seemed very purposeful.

Saw this on Sunday. Pretty good. Which may be saying something considering just how many movies like this completely fumble the ball. Ironically though, me having seen Barbarian just a few weeks earlier may have made me like this less. Compared to that, this was somewhat predictable.
I don't know how notable this is, but my showing had multiple groups walk out and not return at various points.

That image of Rory Kinnear is so unsettling. That, along with the shot of the figure running towards the camera in the tunnel, really makes me excited to see this movie. I like how panic-inducing this imagery is without being super obvious.

My sibling and I are really hoping to get to see this soon!
Also, while I haven't seen the second one yet, one thing that I love about Maleficent is that it's a Disney story retelling that does something completely different with the source material. It doesn't just try to be a copy of the original (looking at you, Lion King), and it doesn't claim to follow the same plot as the original while then going and making a whole much of unneeded changes and tossing out beloved characters (looking at you big-time, upcoming-Mulan-movie). It takes the characters we're familiar with and puts them in a completely new setting and situation. It's basically like an alternate adaptation with the characters rather than being just a cash-grab remake.
Yes! Honestly, as much as people complained about the first Maleficent's lack of faithfulness to the 1959 film (which may have inadvertently led to the lack of creativity in remakes like The Lion King), I think this is how all of the live action "remakes" should be. The original classics exist and have already stood the test of time, why bother going through the motions making shot-for-shot remakes that will ultimately be forgotten? If Disney had taken the characters from Beauty and the Beast, gave it a similar aesthetic to the original, but taken a different approach to the story (and I don't mean adding in pointless "fixes" from the original plot) it still would have made bank.
People are already complaining about Mulan not including any of the songs and eliminating Mushu, but would we really want to see those songs auto-tuned to hell or a less funny expressionless Mushu? Because there is a 99% chance that's what we'd get if they were included. At least this seems like a slightly different take on the story.

Aaaaaaand, tickets bought for Sunday. Then Zombieland on Tuesday. Like I said, I am very much looking forward to the scene chewing of the lead actresses.
So what say you guys? Will this repeat on top this weekend or will it lose out to Joker? I have it retaining the crown by a HAIR ($16.6M to J's $16.5M).
Logic is telling me that it will retain the top spot, as it will have bigger weekend boosts than Joker. The audience for this is likely to wait until the weekend because of school.

Are the visual effects better than they looked in the trailer? The trailers made the movie look kinda fun, but the effects were jarring. It looks like something meant for Disney+ to be honest.
I had no issues with the effects. I thought they were actually an improvement on the first film’s. Even more impressive given that they lost 7 months of post production with the release date change.

Saw it last night, found it very enjoyable. Some excellent world building and costumes. It's nice to see one of these live action remakes take big swings, even if it's not perfect. A nice change of pace from the truly uninspired Lion King remake. Some really dark moments and something in the ending I didn't expect that might appease some people disappointed with the ending of the first film.

It's kind of crazy how much more hyped I'd be for this if the only difference being it was live action. Literally, same cast and everything.

I feel like this is going to do surprising numbers, much in the way the first one did. I've been seeing a lot of advertising for it on social media. Angelina and Michelle are out there PROMOTING this.

New "Behind the Scenes" Featurette
Mufasa: The Lion King | December 20, 2024 | Barry Jenkins | Prequel to Favreau's CGI Version

I know that "The characters look bland and are devoid of life" is almost a tired complaint about Lion King 2019 at this point, but boooooy did this trailer fall flat for me because of this fact. The trailer uses Mufasa's appearance like some kind of exciting reveal that should garner applause, but he just looks like a regular lion. Frankly I can't tell the difference between him and adult Simba, and they barely looked different than Scar. The visual blandness and similarity between characters is as huge issue here.
