It’s not really a Pokémon movie that’s based on the games they grew up with

red and blue sold over 40 million copies. They couldn’t get that audience with battling and comedic relief instead of my edgy tone story

    Pokemon still big and popular.

Games still sell over 15 million copies and ip makes 2.5 billion a year with the IP

pokemon go just last year made 795 million and mobile games have much higher profit margins than movies

    very true

Detective Pikachu sold just like a half a million.

Even the new regular games sell like 30 times that.

The writers of the movie. This was their first big movie and honestly they did a pretty bad job. If it wasn’t Ryan Reynolds who was saying the lines it would been super cringey

the 22 jump street guy makes the most sense

I do wonder how much of a factor Nintendo is in all of this. The are protective of their property and are not known for great story telling.

So I'm not a Pokemon fan...can someone tell me...is Pokemon not as popular as originally thought or did people just not buy into a live action movie? I liked it well enough and that opening ain't bad at all, but I had it pegged for at least 75 mil.

just because people like playing the games means they want to see the movie or a tv show. the show is still around but I doubt I gets huge ratings. Some big time comic fans don't get this as enjoying a comic moive is not the same investment as reading a comic or a big arc.

My only "huh?" about this is...why did they cast complete no-names for the other grown-up members? No cast budget left over after salaries for McAvoy, Chastain, and Hader?

James Ransone is not a no name for horror fans at the very least.

Isaiah Mustafa is just not a name but I have heard "is that the old spice guy?" almost every time I have shown someone the trailer.

Nor should they. They need a decade of successes like WW and Aquaman. They need to recover from the failures of JL and BVS. Distance from Synder as much as possible. Slowly but surely they will be on top again.

true it's not like marvel was that far removed from it's own share of badly received movies when they got things going. hell it took a while before those movies really took off in terms of box office.

Disappointed that Shazam could not recover once AEG hit it. Rampage behaved differently last year. Shazam will barely get to 140 dom. Good compared to the prod budget (100) but underwhelming for sure. The global cume will cross 360 (or already has) and considering China is a very small part with dom being heavy it will ensure great returns.

will it get to 370 ww? that put's it like the 1st cap movie but on a smaller budget? I wonder If it was just not enough spectacle for china or is there something about the material that does not work there.

Solo is a movie that if someone told you 3 year's ago (After Awaken/Rogue One success), you would have thought that was a billion dollar movie too, I think you are right about that.

Pika is a completely different tier of underperforming.

See I feel like a need to see the overseas before I can say it's underperforming? I just feel like people were over inflating the demand for this movie. No doubt it's under that super high expectations  Maybe if it got super great reviews it would be like 15% higher but the 90 million plus was crazy talk for me.

just remembered that people laughed when Pikachu's trailer apparently overshadowed the Toy Story 4 trailer and saying it mean Pikachu would destroy TS4. Now TS4 will have the last laugh

as a pokemon fan that sounds like crazy talk to say it would do better unless detective Pikachu end up as a serious best picture contender

Except Shazam and Pikachu are good films. Did you make this comment here because your petty ass got blocked from the weekend thread?

also both are going to be profitable movies that I expect we will soon hear news of some more sequels soon. GOT is just printing money and would still be one of the most important tv series ever no matter what it does now. It was never going to be in the breaking bad the wire talk of best shows ever anyway.

Ya i realized ditto was the human assistant.

just curious whether Robert, the Son, was really about. Does he hate his dad for spending too much time with Pokémon? He seems pretty decent though and wanted to stop his dad’s evil plan. 0 idea about what his character is supposed to be...

rich guy with daddy issues that does not make him a bad person it was just a red herring

I don’t even blame Mewtwo for being a antagonist

imagine being created just to get controlled and destroy things

the feeling of being used would definitely make me hate humans

And he was really just that in the 1st movie. antagonist does not mean bad guy like in one piece you could say the main hero character luffy is the antagonist of the story.

  12. 2 minutes ago, TigerPaw said:

So in the middle of the movie; It was the real Robert that was missed with his dad during the marketing commercial for the parade?

Does he hate his dad and knows his dad is plotting something? Confused at that part.

he is not missing as far as they know.  he was replaced.

My guess he just asked his son to see him in the office and took him down there where no one else would see it happen.

  13. 4 minutes ago, TigerPaw said:

Yes exactly, that’s what I thought.

There were a few twists here and there but Mewtwo not being a villain isn’t one of them. Mewtwo has always been on the good side since the end of the first film.

He has been the antagonist but not a villain.

Why the heck did the Ditto bring the tied-up real Robert into the old rich guy's office? That part makes no sense to me. I can't think of a plausible reason the Ditto would do that

They ambushed him there and decided moving him was too risky?

IDK if this means anything but I'm pretty sure it does. Rita Ora's character said that Mewtwo escaped from Kanto region 20 years ago. Which means Ash, Misty, and Brock if they're introduced would be in their 20's.

Since this is the same Mewtwo from Pokemon The First Movie and the anime.

I thought it would be like late 30's since ash was like 12 when he escaped.

It's an enjoyable and sincere movie. The plot turns into nonsense once Ditto captures Mewtwo but by that point you're invested.

You'd think mountain-sized Torterra would be a really big deal but that's never mentioned again

those things could destroy a nation with one attack.

Would have brought that up to the son before walked away cause no way they have not killed so many random hikers or etc...

Someone should have mentioned how the guys plan is crazy.

  16. The Avengers movies have reached that late game harry potter movies thing where people feel like they "have to" go in the 1st weekend or etc... to not be spoiled.

I think the harry potter movies had this thing to a much greater degree cause most people thought they would not see anymore harry potter movies.

People still expect more avengers movies just not with these avengers.

So I guess detective Pikachu is to solo of this year

solo is a movie that if someone told you about 10 years ago you would have thought was a no doubt $1 billion dollar movie.

This is doing much better than I thought and I am a Pokémon fan. fandoms make bubbles where you think everyone is into something or knows about films like this but most people don't. I just asks my moms about a film to see if she even knows about it to see how high the GA interest actually is and she had no idea this movie was coming.

If the movie was any more fleshed out on those points, it could be an allegory about America. A very weak one but still.

Also, yes.....the glory of Pokemon in live action would be a battle and we got 1.5.....that's a major component of the games. Guess they couldn't figure out how to work it in organically.

If this does well enough it would not be hard to see or for the studio to do like rocky but with Pokémon or like hajime no ippo but with Pokémon.
