I hesitate to bring up current events, but look at the situation in Gaza. Look at photos and video from Gaza taken by Palestinians. A vast majority of it focuses on the IDF/Israel being the perpetrator of violence. Whether or not you agree with that, it has a point of view. And it has to because Palestinians are living with the violence.

If there was an American Civil War, I would expect every American Journalist to hold an opinion on the war. Because it's their home. So yeah, I expect politics. But not "the president is actually Trump" style politics. I expect "I'm covering the war because my state is going through a genocide led by the Western Forces and people need to see" style politics.

Well I haven't seen it, so I can't say what views the characters have, or the movie (which is not the same thing). For all I know, the movie does actually have a clear stance and a lot of people are missing it because the movie doesn't beat you over the head with it. I wouldn't be shocked if that's the case, which is why I mentioned Zero Dark Thirty.

  2. Something has been bothering me regarding the main criticism of the movie, that it supposedly doesn't take a stand or have a clear message, and that is: why did that become a bad thing? It use to be that movies raising questions and not providing definitive answers, letting the audience come to their own conclusions, was not just acceptable, but preferable even. Many movies that were overtly didactic and message focused were derided as preachy.

It seems over the last decade, people have shifted to wanting movies to have an overt message, telling people what to think rather than letting them think for themselves. Maybe it's just wanting to see their beliefs validated. Maybe it's just a byproduct of polarization. I don't know. I'm reserving judgement on Civil War until I see it, especially if this is another Zero Dark Thirty situation, but I felt that needed to be said.

Run time is 2 hours 10 minutes

    DS2 - 2h 6m (bad audience reception)

    Thor 4 - 1h 59m (bad audience reception)

    BP2- 2h 41m (good audience reception)

    AM3 - 2h 5m (bad audience reception)

    GOTG 3 - 2h 29m (good audience reception)

The Marvels - 1h 45m (bad audience reception)

I know correlation doesn't equal causation but it seems like recently, short run time = B range audience reception, long run time = A range audience reception

How does Eternals fit into this pattern?

Pffft, the characters in Rogue One were fantastic, and I refuse to leave such slander unchecked. j1aUlyv.gif

Agreed, I've never understood the criticism that the characters are underdeveloped. Cassian in particular, even before the show, was one of the most complex of all the heroes in Star Wars. The other character too have more depth than in the average blockbuster. The film does a great job at showing that the Rebels verses the Empire wasn't a simple good verses evil struggle. Rather showing on both sides that there were those with differing goals and motivations and how they conflicted with each other.

isn’t that just a so-so PTA for Past Lives?

It's the fourth best PTA post-pandemic, behind Licoice Pizza, Beau Is Afraid and Spider-Man No Way Home. Also, from the same number of theaters, it's well ahead of The Banshees of Inisherin, Tar and The Fabelmans. And it did that without any big names attached. In this Era, it's a great PTA.

  6. People talk about Maverick giving this a big boost, but is there any other examples of this happening, where a franchise film saw a big boost over its predecessor thanks to an actor appearing in another, unrelated film? The only somewhat example I can think of is Scream VI, who's increase can be in part credited to Jenna Ortega's success with Wednesday. The big difference is that she wasn't widely known before hand while everyone has known who Tom Cruise is for many years. I can't imagine Maverick made him that many new fans who will then follow him into this series. Fallout had only a slight increase over Rogue Nation and I have a hard time seeing the massive increase that some are predicting.
