For a mega franchise with what was said to be a massive fanbase, I don't see how $13m can be seen as anything but disappointing. I mean, even Sith 7 1/2 years ago did 17m. The review results are as I expected, down to 65% and a bad rating. This is Ang Lee Hulk ugly. But the Hobbit should be critic proof, and the bad reviews were held back for as long as possibble, so what are the reasons for the weaker midnights? I'm open to any ideas for this discussipn, because the only thing that makes any sense is that time has not been kind to LOTR and many lost interest in this world. Also, perhaps repeat viewings over the past decade exposed the flaws and excesses in the LOTR trilogy, and people don't view more of that as MUST SEE and are content to just wait until it comes out on video so they can have the remote in hand ready to skip through the boring parts.Thoughts?

Lol No.The original Star Wars will always be the trilogy king. It's a good one, though. Sits comfortably next to other strong ones like Back to the Future and Nolan's Batman.

Wow, you don't really have a grasp on what Bond is at all, huh?Bond is a character that all boys want to be and all girls want. It really dprsn't get anu better.Well, he's no where near the best movie character ever. He's incredibly two dimensional and far too restricted to be the best movie character ever. It's compulsory for him to have gadgets, say the same lines in every outing, drink the same drink (made the same way), use the sam gun etc etc.I can see why people would put him into the conversation, simply because he's had a lot of movies made with that character, but that doesn't mean that character is very good. It's the villains, stunts, and action that makes the Bond movies good, not really Bond himself, and especially not because he's a good character (perhaps people like Bond because he's a poster image of an impossibly perfect male, but his character actually stinks).

WB's sympathy only goes so far...A portion of the proceeds to the victims would really help the box office numbers, me thinks!

Wow....Because it happened at BATMAN...
It happened in a MOVIE THEATER!!!! Are you really so obtuse to believe people wouldn't stay away from the entire complex to avoid being anywhere near? THINK! Those drops will tell the story.

There is definitely denial coming from you. When the numbers come in for the other movies, and thete aren't significant drops, how will you spin it, then? Heath Ledgers death inflated the interest in the last movie, as did the Joker. Bkb and I tried to tell everyone. It is your own fault if you went all out looney and had no objectivity because they couldn't handle how bad Avengers destroyed the Batman franchise.Like I said, the effect of the massacre will linger on this weekend, but people will start watching the film later into its run. I'm positive it will have strong legs.

It certainly could help. It's publicity. Not really. This is certainly a deflater. It certainly doesn't help in anyway.

Copycat killings would be the only thing that would hurt the box office for TDKR.
-
Really, the oversensitivity on your part isn't helping.Dude... seriously. GROW THE FUCK UP. Show some decency here.

TDKR was never going to set any records, but this terrible tragedy will pull in more people than it will push away due to morbid curiousity, much like Ledger's death did. It' s big news publicity that even money and WOM can't buy. What a horrible thing to happen. I hope there doesn't turn out to be any crazy connections to Bane.It feels callous to even think about TDKR, but it's still a real shame. This should have been a really fun, crazy box office weekend to track. And it's started in the worst possible way.

I never said $280m was any such thing. $250 is acceptable when the sequel is expected to go up.It is a domestic disappointment, that's a fact. No two words about it. Before the film came out we pretty much all agreed that 280m is the break or make point. It's doing lower than that. Losing third of its audience is considered doing well?

Movie was pretty goqd, despite excluding Jonah. I like that they got rid of the organic webs! Nice start, with a sequel introducing Mary Jane, Norman, Harry, and Jonah and the Bugle staff. with the Green Goblin and Gwen Stacey death stories as the focus. The sequel will make a fortune in line with the first 2. Andrew Garfield isn't quite as good as Maguire, but he does just fine. Spider-Man's future is okay.

The like feature is available here!I'd like this post if I could. My sentiments exactly. There's a real shot of THE AVENGERS sinking the TITANIC (even with the 3D re-release), but a real uphill battle against AVATAR. But who knows? Let's hope so, if there's a movie deserving of becoming the highest grossing movie ever, it's this one.

You're seeing the effects of this being a spectacle movie like I mentioned. Movies like Avatar, Star Wars, JAWS, The Dark Knight, had the spectacle aspect going for it. The thing that locked this as an opening weekend record breaker, and was just brilliant on Disney and Marvel's part, was knowing they had a great movie, and releasing it abroad the week before. That guaranteed the record was going to be broke by enough that I had no concerns calling it a lock. The quality of Avengers (seen it 3 times!) was a best case scenerio. It was easy to see that DKR never stood a chance against this. Nowhere near the family appeal. The question now remains about just how high it can go. The Dark Knight is obviously going to get passed up, and Titanic could. I don't see Avatar going down anytime soon, but who knows... If any movie could do that, this is the one. The sequel would have to be just as good to stand any chance.

Yeah, he unquestionably should have won best picture and best director! So should Lucas have for Star Wars. They pulled off impossible to make movies that still resonate to this day. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is excellent and Annie Hall is decent, but they just don't compare to those two films in quality and impact on pulp culture.Does anybody have any idea how many people won't go in the ocean because of Jaws? I went in once for about 10 minutes in 3 feet of water, and the whole time I was in, I heard that John Williams Jaws music, and kept thinking about how most attacks happen in 3 feet of water. That was all for me. Never again! lolFuckin A Steven! Jaws being nominated for 4 oscars is a frikkin joke and Steven not being nominated is an atrocity. He should have won that year as well. Great footage.

A top 3 list makes coming up with the best 3 a challenge, not easy! That's an impressive list ... I was thinking along the same lines but a Top-3-list is useless anyway because you have to leave so many brilliant films out. "Rio Bravo" and "High Noon" should be on such lists, and "Little Big Man", and "Butch Cassidy ..." or even "Dances with Wolves" ...

I love me a good Western. The Western used to be what today's superhero movie is to the marketplace, only TV also was Western heavy. My top 3 are:1. Tombstone2. Unforgiven3. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

You know, as weak as the trailer is, does Anne Hathaway pull off being sexy, or what? I don't throw that word around like non thinking fools who think it means "good looking" do.

Die Hard and Lethal Weapon!

The Dark Knight Rises. It's coming off 2 successful movies that each topped eachother, with a director that hasn't missed with anything he's directed yet. This is why I foresee a letdown on the way.The Hobbit is coming off an incredibly successful trilogy, but each individual film got worse, with the last being a bloated and sloppy mess in places. Please don't remind me of the Oscars that were given for the entire achievement and pretend like that justifies ROTK in some way. It was long since decided to give that one a free pass after the quality of the first 2 didn't get rewarded. Then, if we take into account how sloppy and self indulgent Jackson's King Kong was, and then the head scratching choice to do The Lovely Bones, which bombed, I think the guarantee is less in more people's minds that it'll deliver. I personally feel the Hobbit will deliver, as long as Jackson learned to get over his self indulgent tendencies. I feel Hobbit will be given more room for error, thus having smaller shoes to fill at the time it's released.

Whoops, I the one DRK was meant to be the Hobbit.1. Avengers2. Skyfall3. Dark Shadows4.The Hobbit5. The Dark Knight Rises6. The Expendables 27. Titanic 3D8. Amazing Spider-Man9. G.I. Joe 210. Snow White and the Huntsman Spider-Man is in trouble because this is Marvel's #1 character, yet it is way down the list and not on some lists.SH2 is no longer available since it was released last week. You have Dark Knight Rises twice. Why is Spider Man in trouble?
