  1. As expected, Avengers: Age of Ultron was a global hit this weekend, racking up $201.2 million in just 55% of the international marketplace and opening at #1 in all 44 territories it premiered. The total is an estimated 44% ahead of the original Avengers film and 24% ahead of Iron Man 3 accounting for currency fluctuation. The top 5 markets were South Korea ($28.2 million), the UK and Ireland ($27.3 million), Russia ($16.2 million), Brazil ($13.1 million), and Australia ($13.1 million). 

     

    Ultron smashed box office records in Asia where it had the biggest opening weekend of all-time in Russia, Hong Kong ($6.4 million), and the Philippines ($7.7 million), and the second biggest opening weekend in South Korea, India ($7.7 million), Singapore ($3.6 million), and Vietnam. The sequel performed strongly in Europe as well, taking the highest opening weekend ever for a superhero movie in the UK/Ireland, Germany ($9.3 million), Sweden, Norway, and the Netherlands.

     

    Ultron also set new records on overseas IMAX screens, scoring $10.4 million on 175 IMAX screens to become the best-ever opening beating Interstellar’s $7.188 million. Highlights include Hong Kong which swept up $420K on 4 screens ($106K /screen), South Korea which took in $1.6 million on 15 screens ($106K /screen) and the Philippines which grossed $650k on 8 screens ($81K /screen).

     

    More international markets will roll out Ultron next weekend including Spain, Mexico, Portugal, Croatia, Czech Rep, Greece, Lebanon, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Thailand, Trinidad, Panama, Venezuela, Uruguay, Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile and Colombia, along with the highly anticipated North American opening. China will open on May 12th due to a local holiday next weekend and Japan will open on July 4.

  2. Disney/Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy added $33.1M across about 65 markets. In its 3rd weekend, it importantly bowed in France which sped off with $7.2M. Also opening this frame was Spain with $3M. Both opening weekends are ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s debut perfs earlier this year. GOTGhas now grossed an estimated $196.4M overseas to surpass Captain America: The First Avenger‘s $194M. There are still key markets to come including Germany (Aug 28), Japan (Sept 13), Italy (Oct 22) and China which is expected to take an early fall slot. The worldwide cume for the charmer is $418.7M. Outside domestic, the biggest markets are the UK ($31.5M), Russia ($30.4M) and Mexico ($16.6M).

  3. Transformers: Age Of Extinction morphed up another $8.4M in 52 territories this weekend at 3,551 locations. With a new cume of $811.1M, the movie has surpassed Iron Man 3 to become the 6th highest-grossing title of all time internationally. Particularly, TAOE was able to capitalize on the Obon holidays inJapan to scoop up a $3.6M second weekend at 335 locations. The local cume is $18M. Also notable is the German holdover where it added $1.3M from 426 sites, lifting the local cume to $36.6M.

  4. 47 Ronin continued to struggle to put up a fight around the world. The Keanu Reeves action flick  failed to put up big numbers in its U.K. debut with a fifth place, $2.3 million opening at 275 dates. The film opened in sixth place in Spain with a $1.9 million take from 273 dates. The troubled Universal release hit first place in several smaller territories (Bulgaria, Cyrus, Egypt, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates) and posted positive bows in Taiwan ($1.6M) and Thailand ($1.1M). 
     
    47 Ronin has grossed $22.3 million overseas and $42.9 million worldwide. 

     

     

  5. 47 Ronin enjoyed a couple of #1 openings from Malaysia and Singapore to bring in a $6.2 million haul a week ahead of its day-and-date release in North America and 27 overseas territories. The latest Keanu Reeves action vehicle took a $1.1 million debut from 91 dates in Malaysia and a $1 million bow from 27 dates in Singapore. The film finished mid-table in its third weekend in Japan with a $200k performance, taking its 16-day total in the country to $3.5 million.
