  1. Then cite your sources and post the data.

Assuming you dont want to pay for the rreserch papers done over the last few years then one source is somewhere like Torrentfreak that posts charts of downloads. 95% of movies on those charts are DVD/BR rips and in the 100K range for downloads, its VERY rare for an active cinema release to appear.

Sure AOU did appear on the list a while back, but given that the quality of the files was akin to watching a VHS on an old CRT after you had dipped your whole head in vaseline, i doubt it had much box office effect.

  2. Actually yes it does.  You don't need hard evidence, you need common sense, which isn't so common, apparently.

If you can get something for free, or go pay $10 for it, what motivation do you have to go pay for it?

Yes you DO need hard evidence, thats how the universe works. Common sense doesnt apply when you grossly over simplifiy the situation and dont understand the full situation. You cant make a common sense judgement if you dont know the facts.

Plenty of things can affect BO gross, piracy after the run is ended isnt one of them. Terrible cam copies that are out of sync and unwatchable isnt one of them.

Download numbers simply dont add up, its that simple. As for why pay? Well the cinema offers an experience you cant get at home, thats why. Whats really hurts tickets? 50 inch TVs and home surround sound, media that is better quality than the cinema, and stupid ticket prices... and crappy movies.

  3. There are fortunately very rarely leaks before home media release. Expendables 3 is probably highest profile movie that has leaked before it's cinema run. Or if you disagree, can you give me some examples?

    There anrent many..

The studio blamed its poor BO on the leak. Obviously it had nothing to do with it being complete shit, Oh no..

It took 45million of so less than #2, the notion that it was downloaded and watched 5 million times by people that would have otherwise paid is laughable.

  4. I can't tell you how many times I've seen/heard people post/say they're not going to watch a movie in theaters because they already have/will have it at home for free.

Cinema cams? Why are you ignoring actual leaked films/files?

Because they are rare and the best, actually watchable copies are on private trackers and get a few thousand downloads tops. Been there, done that, seen the evidence. Your personal ancedotal evidence is meaningless.

  5. Can't believe I'm saying this twice in 3 days, but that's like saying piracy and streaming aren't what tanked album sales and then digital track sales.

Totally different situation. Pirated music has no loss of quality compared to the original (more so now most is average quality digital anyway) and are available in minutes from release. Have you actually seen cinema cams? 99% arent even worth the bandwidth loss for a few hours. BR rips dont affect cinema gross all that much.

  6. I agree with this. Piracy has killed the B.O. in many ways.

Thats complete rot. At mosts it cost a movie maybe 50-100k tickets, thats it, and thats a movie like this. For a smaller hit its inconsequential. What it hurts is DVD/BR sales, and frankly with the DRM bullcrap and forced ads they deserve it.

Even TV isnt that affected by piracy and that gets hit far harder than movies, GoT has millions of downloads, but mainly because its network is subscription and simply unavailable to most people legally..

  7. DS9 is the best by a mile for all the reasons already listed.

TNG is a close second just because it came out when I was in my teens.

TOS is next, much more advanced than people give it credit for. Once you see past the primary colours its got great stories.

Voyager, well i liked it at the time, and it has its moments, but it hasnt stood the test of time very well, and much of it is rubbish.

All of Enterprise is rubbish, season 3 should be banned.

I found Fishnets rant amusing, in my mind she is Kira, but thinks she is Dax.

  8. TOS In order:

    Bones

    Spock

    Kirk

    Uhura

    TNG In Order:

    Picard

    Data

    Lwaxana Troy

    Q

    Worf

    Barclay

    DS9 in Order:

    Garak

    Dukat

    Weyoun

    Quark

    Dax

    Odo

    Voyager in Order:

    Janeway

    Seven

    Enterprise:

    Phlox

    Movies only (or mainly):

    The Borg Queen

    Khan

    The whales

    General Chang

    Valeris

  9. Burton's Batman is unwatchable.

I recently saw this again, and frankly, its rubbish. The music dates it hideously, the acting is patchy at best and Jacks Joker isnt very good... It really hasn't stood up very well at all.

  10. The worst movie i ever saw was Almighty Thor. Its an Asylum picture so i suppose not a movie released in Theatres, but SyFy had the nerve to show it. In my defence I wasn't really watching it, it was just on while i was doing other things, but its awfulness caught my attention.

Even for an Asylum movie its terrible and cheap, its basically just people walking around what looks like some downtown area in cheap customs. No one else who is accidental in the frame is taking any notice of them at all and the acting is below abysmal. Having said that the guy playing Loki is much hotter than Hiddleston :lol:

As for an actual theatre release, well I'm quite careful what I see, but Twilight was by far the worst (and frankly only JUST better than Almighty Thor, and worse than any other Asylum movie).

  11. A few (I think) no one mentioned.

    Norman Bates -Psycho

    Annie Wilkes - Misery

The Child Catcher - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Baby Jane Hudson - Whatever happened to baby Jane?

    Don Logan - Sexy Beast

Nurse Ratched - One flew over the Cuckoos nest

    Jack Torrance - The Shining

The Borg Queen - Star Trek First Contact

  12. All the 2013 BP noms were boring movies that seem calculated to tick boxes just to get the nom.

The Artist was SO bad it made want to kill everyone involved. The poster child for trying to win awards at the expense of making a decent film.

The Avengers gets boring after about 3 watches.

The Abyss is better than Avatar.

  13. Maybe I'm just being overly cynical. I don't know. But I strongly disliked the WOK stuff, and the two people I saw the film with were also big fans of WOK and felt exactly the same way. Like I wrote before, I suspect how well you like that part of the film depends on your view of WOK.

I don't mind referencing the other ST timeline, but I felt this was so close to the other timeline that it was almost a parody.

And for the record, I adore BSG. It's my favourite tv show of all time.

I suppose it depends on whether you think the movie was well done or not. I do, therefore I didn't mind the parallel. I was worried that it wouldnt be.

  14. Yeha, I know but since this trek is tyring to be untrek a spossible they could`ve ditched that effect altogether. since it sucked in canon too.

Totally disagree with you. Its a different style of trek, but its still trek. Its a movie based on the weekly-reset style TV format. The canon is important, so they need plot devices to get around writing themselves into a dead end. Even the movie writers have to respect that and viewers expect them to follow canon as much as possible. Its not your place to think the canon sucks, it is what it is and that's that.

If you think thats bad then i pray they never make a Dr Who movie, the recent series have been full of positively random and silly plot devices.

  15. I'll give it a C, but mostly because the chemistry between Kirk and Spock and between Uhura and Spock is pretty good.

The first 40 minutes are entertaining. About the same level of fun as ST 2009, but when they reach the Klingon planet it starts to fall apart. The pacing during act 2 is a drag, and the whole "Admiral trying to start a war" cliche really doesn't work. Speaking of cliches, here's another movie giving us a villain who gets captured on purpose, as part of his Machiavellian scheme plot.

But a few cliches are nothing compared to what comes next....

(I should mention at this point that I love Wrath of Khan. It's easily the best Trek movie, and is one of the best movies of its kind ever made.)

The way the incredible conclusion of Wrath of Khan is shamelessly STOLEN here is astonishing. Ballsy, yeah. Taking the piss? Oh yeah! Whole lines of dialogue, entire scenes even, just copy and pasted.... from a MASSIVELY BETTER MOVIE. I can't wait until JJ does EP7 and includes the carbonite chamber scene, "I love you", "I know" and all that. With added lens flares. Can't... wait...

After that it's OK. There's magical blood. And then the theme tune.

My guess is that if WOK means nothing to you you'll enjoy this - it's breezy, amusing, well directed. But if those last 20 minutes of WOK mean a lot to you then the way it's been bastardized in this movie will piss you off no end.

Thats a very cynical way to look at it. Actually the intent of the movie is to show parallels across the realities. Anyone who has watched the new Battlestar Galactica series will know all out parallels in time and space, and Scifi in general.
