nah..Indy lost only 32% of the shows...that's probably the main reason why it hasn't had a bigger drop. MI7 for example lost like 50% of it's shows. Some of the other holdovers like ATSV, TLM lost like 70% of shows. I think even Insidious3 lost like 40%+ of the shows

So Thursday is already with all the shows/theater losses or does that start Friday?

    Haunted Mansion

    Equalizer 3

    Poor Things

    Challengers

    A Haunting in Venice

    Drive-Away Dolls

    Dumb Money

    The Creator

    Killers of the Flower Moon

Kraven the Hunter (just for the too good cast alone heh)

    Exorcist

    The Holdovers

    Priscilla

    Dune 2

    The Marvels

    Hunger Games

    Next Goal Wins

    Napoleon

    Wish

    Wonka

    Aquaman

    The Color Purple

The ones I'll certainly see or am intrigued by that are on the schedule and unlikely to be sent to 2024 because of the strike, at least.

Oh wow. I’ve only seen 2 movies this year (Avatar 2 & TLM) and out of the upcoming movies I may (or may not) see Dune 2, Aquaman 2 (if it’s as adventurous as the first) and maybe The Color Purple. All depending on my mood.

I used to go to the movies every month though. Miss those times.

What was everyone's favorite year for movies since 2010?

    Mine was 2018....

    1) Infinity War

    2) Mission Impossible Fallout

    3) Into the Spider-verse

    4) The Incredibles 2

    2012

    In no particular order:

    Total Recall

    Prometheus

    Battleship

    Django Unchained

    The Hobbit

    The Bourne Legacy

    The Dark Knight Rises

    The Avengers

    Skyfall

    Project X

    The Hunger Games

Don’t care that some of them flopped/are hated. This was probably the last year I truly loved superhero movies.

I guess it's the assumption is that many women aren't so interested in action heroines (at least, compared to men interested in action heroes).

I'm not sure if this assumption is right. However, I know there are action shows full of (good looking) guys that are very popular among the female audience even though there are no female characters in relevant roles.

Unfortunately, it’s true for some women. My friend said she prefers male-led action movies. To be honest (and to my shame) I agree.

If Mission bombs and Oppenheimer underperforms, but Barbie does something like 180 mln opening weekend in US alone, audiences have zero right to complain about Hollywood making garbage or use high ticket price excuse to ignore good stuff, you get exactly what you pay for, it's as simple as that.

    How so?

Some people (me) are not okay with Tom Cruise and his treatment of his daughter. Also, some people (me) are not interested in 10.000 sequels.
Lastly, some people (me) have to be in a good headspace to watch a nauseating film about humans wiping out whole cities of innocents.

That doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate quality films.

I don’t care for Barbie and I’m not going to watch it on the big screen, but good for WB for finally getting a hit. It means they’ll have more money to make films I do care for. *shrugs*

Good lord, I forgot about Snow White being so close. Not ready for that shitshow with a POC playing a character literally named for her skin tone after all the Mermaid crap over a fictional creature that should have no ties to a set ethnicity

The backlash Rachel is receiving is nothing compared to what Halle has and is still receiving. I think Snow White won’t be in the same position as Mermaid.

Mix of weakening euro, shrinking western european markets, and just Europe not really getting on board with a lot of new franchises that are dominating the film world...MCU never really took off here in europe for example, Endgame wasn't even the highest grossing film of 2019.

Also, in the Netherlands cinemas are still recovering from the pandemic. There are 30% less visitors compared to pre-pandemic. A news report said it’s because of inflation, high energy prices, but the biggest competition is ‘live entertainment’ (bowling, etc).
I can imagine this to be the case for some other European countries as well. Someone mentioned that good weather is competition for cinemas in Germany and UK. People are just happy to do fun stuff outdoors again.

Also, about Indiana Jones: some casual moviegoers were making fun of his old age. I know people are joking, but I think ageism may (or may not) become an issue. I’m ashamed to admit that I too was/am meh about Ford’s age.

Bumblebee OW was just $21m, so $61m OW for ROTB should be considered a WIN.

Agree. However, it was just announced that it’s hitting digital platforms on July 11 (Spiderverse on July 18) so that might impact its legs…

On another note, I’m disappointed so many huge movies are releasing in such a short time. Would have loved to see Transformers, Fast X, and Indiana Jones in cinemas, but I already saw the little mermaid twice and I don’t have *that* much money (I’m willing to bet I’m not the only one, so why did the studios do this?).

Disney is now daring the others to move...it never made sense for Disney to wait with MP2 for Xmas, since SO many folks will be in theaters from Dec 19-Dec 24, so you might as well get ALL the holiday dollars...

I'm trying to decide which of the movies might be better off waiting til Dec 25 to open...or kicking to Spring...I think Holmes and Watson is a no brainer now to move to Dec 25...Maybe Bumblebee should kick to April 12 (with Easter being so late) and try to take advantage of the 2 week spring break and break before Avengers 4 - I think it could work really well in that slot...

Or they just all stay put and may the best one(s) win. Last year other studios did profit from Disney (TLJ) underperforming, so why should studios move for something less than SW *shrugs*?

you're telling lies. she wasn't overshadowed.  but i must say as a girl, i loved their story the most.

Jupsz. Why are people acting like romance is bad in a movie? Love is one of the most beautiful feelings in the world and not downgrading female characters at all. Done right, it brings magic to a movie. James Cameron gets this.

Paul Rudd with a 80M movie opening. Many A-listers would love that kind of opening weekend..

Jupsz. I will admit that the money some blockbusters make are mind-blowing. But they are not the rule, more the exception. With 80m OW only 87 movies EVER and only 6 movies this year made more money on an OW. Imo that's quite impressive :)

I’ve said it before but I still cannot see Disney releasing Dumbo, Aladdin and Lion King within 4 months - with Toy Story in there as well.

I’m fully expecting Aladdin to be moved.

They really should move something. I think all of those movies can break out huge, but not with them coming out so soon after another. IMO I still think DP2 could have done better if it didn't open so close to IW.

I get the sense that Ant-Man is a character that, even with where Marvel is today, a lot of people have a hard time taking seriously (even within the context of the more comedic approach that these movies have taken). This sequel also felt a lot smaller in scope from a marketing standpoint compared to the last several MCU flicks and didn't feel like something part of the broadly-expanded canvas (then again, neither did Guardians 2 and that increased from the first Guardians but that movie was a much bigger deal than the original Ant-Man was).

I get what you're saying, but imo an ant-man isn't really sillier than a talking tree or a talking raccoon. I agree though that it feels smaller, but that could also give it an advantage. We'll see  though :)

Is 85-90+ an underperformance and not a huge hit? It's not like this isn't the least generally anticipated Marvel film since at least Doctor Strange and a sequel to a film that only opened to 57M at the end of Phase 2. Whatever happens, it's gonna have a hugely sized bump from the 1st one and more than likely above expectations. Context, folks.

Uhm, I didn't say 85-90 was an underperformance...? I was making a comment in general.
