  1. New International markets for TASM 2  are doing well for this week so far. All hope's not lost yet, but legs are obviously a question mark.

Philippines - 2 day opening all-time opening record - over and above Avengers and IM 3. Roughly $2.5M Wednesday/Thursday

India - $2M opening day - all-time record for any Hollywood film

Malaysia - Ditto as India, $1.5M OD

    France - $2.7M Wednesday + $2M Thursday (30% over TASM)

    Brazil - $3.7 OD (100% above TASM)

  2. I'm a huge spidey fan, but I do believe that these are disappointing numbers for the 15 territories in question, including the UK. Considering that this is a school holiday week in the UK and a long weekend, I expected TASM2 to do at least $20M equivalent, over the 5 days to Sunday. However, I also think that the flick may wind up in the $800-850M range (just about), carried by China + Latam + a few other Asian countries. I now think that the US tally may also end up lower than TASM's $262M.

Amy Pascal's $1Billion hopes will remain just that; an empty hope

  3. TASM2 will have the world-wide premiere in London tomorrow night. There was a screening for critics last night in the UK and the buzz seems to be overall positive for the film. It opens next Wednesday in the UK and a few other countries, with fairly sizeable weekend releases over the next 2 weeks, till the May 2nd kick-off in the US.

I won't be too surprised if it does score number one over at least the first 3 weekends after its OS release.

  4. Also remember that it is NOT Sony that is driving the Robocop franchise; it is MGM through their Orion Pictures acquisition. Sony part financed the film (MGM majority financed Robocop), and does own the majority of distribution rights worldwide, including the US and China, which are Robocop's biggest markets with the reboot. However, the creative direction of the film is MGM's.

If this was a flop and it is not turning out to be so because of international performance, MGM had a lot more to lose than Sony does.

  5. Robocop is currently at $220 Mill WW and $165 Mill International. China may add another $15-20 mill before the end of its run and if Japan can throw in about $10 mill, then we will be looking at $200 Mill International and around $260 Mill WW, which is not too shabby and bodes well for a sequel ;-).
