I agree with this.  Although, September and October rarely have Youth skewing movies, as it's not an overly popular time for that age group to go see movies.

What I think could really blow up is Fantastic Beasts.  Harry Potter is still very relevant in pop-culture and I could see a 100m+ OW and 300m+ DOM.

Why that's very interesting *cough*Go to my club*cough*

My thoughts on Deepwater Horizon are coming in the morning but I will say this: you can definitely see where that colossal budget went. The destruction of the rig (which makes up the entire second half of the movie) is gonna go down as one of the most astounding set pieces of the year.

Did you get the Patriots Day trailer? If so, was it any good?

  3. The thing that's interesting is that 2015 was kind of a precursor to this; The only movies that ended their run at $200M were Mockingjay Pt. 2, Martian, Cinderella, and Spectre, and the latter two had some fudge in their numbers, so it's debatable if they truly count. I guess in today's world of rising ticket prices and shorter theater-to-ancillary windows, so this will likely be the new norm.

I'm almost guaranteed that next year will be a repeat. Even the movies that I currently predict will be in the $200M range (Lego Batman, Kong, Fast 8, Apes, Dunkirk, Ninjago, Thor, Coco) I have a strong suspicion will fall below or rise above that range.

New Review: BEST SCI-FI IN RECENT MEMORY

"Arrival may be the best science fiction film to come out in recent memory. It’s smart, quiet, and infused with heart. Arrival is soulful down to its very core, and director Denis Villeneuve portrays the impact that an impending alien invasion has on people on both a micro and macro level quite effectively. Not only do we get to see the intimate reactions between our main characters, we also get to experience the differing dynamics between the major countries who have had the luck of an alien ship landing in their backyard. In other words, the stakes of the film are deeply personal, but are shown against a vast global backdrop."

This year's Interstellar? Amy Adams' sci-fi gem ARRIVAL is much more than that

The hardest thing for any science fiction movie to achieve these days is a real sense of amazement or wonder. Audiences quickly get used to seeing ever more fantastical things and as your tolerance rises, filmmakers have to push things further and further to get any reaction. It's why those first few series of The X-Files were so jaw-dropping, but the last were just eye-rolling.

And the more impressive special effects get, the less likely you are to believe your eyes. Moments like that first glimpse at a dinosaur in Jurassic Park or finally meeting the tuneful visitors in Close Encounters of the Third Kind just don't come along all that often.

    Believe the hype, then.

IGN: Amy Adams delivers a powerhouse performance in tale of alien visitation.

Arrival is a language lesson masquerading as a blockbuster, though much more entertaining than that sounds. The film features shades of Interstellar, Contact and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but never feels derivative. Rather it’s smart, sophisticated sci-fi that that asks BIG questions, and does a pretty good job of answering them.

  5. I just remember a lot of people saying similar things about a "3 hour, borderline NC-17 white collar satire" a few years ago

That "3 hour, borderline NC-17 white collar satire" had Leo though. Liam Neeson's a boss, but his presence does not guarantee $100M. I'll eat crow if you're right, but I only see Gangs of New York numbers as this movie's ceiling.
