I don’t think anyone even noticed that. But everyone noticed how aggressively the challengers was promoted (honestly almost Barbie level), in fact the same phrases and memes are being used on social media for challengers, like… "2 tickets for challengers please," "3 tickets for challengers please." 💀
Challengers got Barbie level promo? Youre joking right?
You must really hate Zendaya to say it almost got Barbie sized promo.

I mean, 15M for this movie is not particularly a bad opening. I would like 20M, but 15M was always the baseline expected number, so i don’t know why people are surprised.
It’s probably going to make 80-90M WW, it’s a decent result for a movie like this in 2024.
The only problem is that is costs 55M, if it costs 25M everyone would call it a success.
Obviously i know the budget is a problem and objectively will prevent the movie from being profitable (at least theatrically), don’t need anyone pointing that to me, but from what we know, it wasn’t supposed to cost this much and it did because it was shoot during Covid.
This is not the first and won’t be the last case of a movie doing relatively well for it’s genre but still not being profitable due to unexpected covid shooting. It’s not really fair to me to say that a movie like this should be doing 150-200M which is way higher than anyone expects for a semi arthouse sports drama simply because the budget blowed up in difficult times.
It’s fair to discuss the problems situations like this are still creating, how it’ll depend on PVOD and streaming, how it’s disappointing to have another bummer in a already weak year. But it’s important to keep reminding the context of those things to not be the person that says movies that historically doesn’t do 200M should be doing now.
Great, point hopefully some of the product placement in the movie offset some of the budget
There was quite a bit of Adidas ads in the film
And some Uniqlo
Also Aston Martin

I really thought it was clear Art won, but my partner also said that the movie never shows who won
Yeah my best friend told me art won too. I couldn’t tell because everyone looked happy as hell when he hugged Patrick and I wasn’t sure if art jumping over that far was a foul or not lol

zendaya doesn't work not only because she doesn't have the psyque du role and looks younger, i mean people can look younger than their age even in real life,... her acting is very mid in general. She has 2-3 scene where she tries something new, for the rest the same two expressions with half closed eyes to look intense or a sulky face.
Zendaya acting is mid?
just say you don’t like her. But to say a Shakespearean trained actress who is the only black woman to ever win best actress at the Primetime Emmy’s twice is a mid actress is a reach! -

What would make this a flop??? this will make more than saltburns whole domestic run opening weekend. Probably close to double.
I think the issue is the $50 million budget and marketing budget was definitely huge too. I’m assuming $100 million worldwide might allow this to at least break even.

Loved the movie, the ending was good but I wish we could’ve gotten more clarity. I honestly still can’t tell if Art or Patrick won. Everyone seemed happy, does this mean they going to live as a thrupple? lol

If this flops Amy Pascal will lose it cause she hasn’t had a flop in over a decade as a producer.

Grace Randolph found this to be pretty "nuanced" and "tasteful" compared to Poor Things and Saltburn so I'm guessing it's on the tamer side unless you don't even watch HBO. Coz that woman was originally scared of the first trailer too and said it felt like a party that got too wild and she'd be calling her mom to pick her up 😝
I haven’t seen Poor Things but you do see both penis and buttocks in Challengers lol

I mean, we just had Poor Things make $100M+ and win 4 Oscars lol
Poor Things only made $34 million in the USA, I’m not sure Zendaya can pull the same internationally and apparently it’s going to be banned in China although I don’t know how true that is.

I’m a Zendaya fan in case you can’t tell by my avi lol but the movie was absolutely amazing. As a fan I’m not sure how the GP will handle it. A lot of sex scenes which might scare off GP. I mentioned in the crowd report thread about someone looking really uncomfortable during one of the scenes they promote in the trailer although it wasn’t long.
Even though I’m a Zendaya fan and loved the movie and it seems critics love it, I’m not sure how the academy will feel about it. It’s not an Oscar bait film at all, but an overall good popcorn movie. Gave me vibes of early 90s Demi Moore films.

Challengers
IMAX Early Access Screening (Miami)
40% full
Trailers:
We Grown Now
The Blue Angels
Inside OutDespicable Me 4
A couple of laughs during the movie. One lady seemed a bit uncomfortable during one of the risqué scenes. The end had people on the edge of their seat, literally felt like I was at a sports game lol. Most people stayed during the end credits. Overall audience liked it.

Last minute add...
Challengers will be a $5 TMobile/Atom deal next week (starting Tuesday) - plan accordingly.
Not the norm for their choices, but then again, it seems this movie is so "young adult/18-25" it may get a nice effect...
2024 TMobile Movies
Bob Marley
Ghostbusters
Challengers
I mean Zendaya is a walking ad in the sense that brands and people love her so I’m not shocked T-Mobile did this.

This movie was a blast. Millennials who grew up on Cruel Intentions and sex comedies will love it. Most fun I've had in the theatre for ages. If Queer is as good as this 2024 is gonna be the year of Guadagnino.
How did you see it already? I have to wait until Monday to see it.

If this does well based on the budget I hope that it shows Hollywood along with Anyone But You that small budget films are with going to the theaters and not just streaming. At least that’s the hope!

I´m going to add Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to the Oscar buzz, the songs are perfect.
Easily their best work since The Social Network.
It might be the album of the year.
How did y’all see the movie?

This will probably make a killing at the box office but looks very pretentious

They’re going all out with the press tour. Hope the film lives up to the hype
I think it'll do well at least. Amy Pascal is one of the producers and she has a lot of pull in the industry and doesn't really attach her name to things unless it's good and will give her a good ROI.
