Power Rangers should do okay but I think Lionsgate should be wary about a sequel because it would likely do worse business,
I'll be curious to see if Boss Baby and Smurfs affect PR at all. It's rare for two kids movies to come within a week of each other.
Next March looks slightly less busy but I imagine we'll see some solid numbers from Wreck it Ralph 2 and Ready Player One, the only question mark is Tomb Raider.
I think a sequel would follow TMNT > TMNT 2 pattern.

August legs are traditionally quite good, not only because it's still summer school days for much of the country (including the very populated North East) but because there's so little competition.
Just seems to me that the first half of the month HAS to be big for it to be a big month overall. How many big films are ever scheduled in the last half? Some outliers, but very few usually.

Now that we have preview numbers, all eyes on the weekend's real story.
Slamma Jamma.

March has definitely surpassed August as a big box office month
August will always be at a disadvantage because there is the back to school dip eventually.
If scheduled right, March can play big all month long.
-
That could get them to 40m, as it should still play pretty family friendly on Saturday.
Ghost in the Shell may be the first major casualty of the month next week. If not, this March will be one for the record books even more than what it already is.

Not bad for King. Could have been a much steeper drop.

What do these two mean?
The girl is that crazed-looking lady at the Trump rally right? Who was holding her baby up to him? Something like that.

Why the fuck are Smurfs and Boss Baby coming out on back-to-back weekends?
BB is going to be lucky to make 100, Smurfs may not crack 50. Smurfs in particular looks insufferable, imho.

I'm so used to thinking how easy alot of people go on most well-received blockbuster movies here that I was stunned that I really liked Kong alot better than most here seem to. It has real problems, like a lack of dramatic tension/build sometimes (not near Jurassic World levels bad though) and the fact that Hiddleston is a massive bore, but it's very stylish, is chock full of actually fucking interesting setpieces instead of endless light beams in a parking lot, and outside of the two boring, "movie star" lead characters, the rest of the ensemble is really great. IDK, John C. Reily's character in this is probably legitimately the most I've cared about a character in one of these big franchise movies since Fury Road. I think it's definitely worth a watch on the big screen.
It's also seriously funny.

You're garbage
Great movie. That and the first PotC were both great, and the rest in both franchises were all varying degrees of not-great.
I'm really interested to see how the 5th installments of each do this summer. I think they are both fading fast.

That would require it to act like an animated movie, don't see 25 happening, but I can see 21-22 happen, 23 at the highest.
Eh, you're probably right.
But Logan's true Fri-Sat bump last week was over 33%, and you gotta assume that it was more frontloaded than this. A 33% increase gets this to 22 today. A little more might be possible, maybe 24.

Have a feeling Kong will do really well today, the matinees around me seem to be selling well, and it has only dropped 1% from its peak on Movietickets yesterday (openers normally drop a lot on Saturday in percentage terms if they have a fan rush)
Could do 25 today and make it to 60 for the weekend now.

Well, not every movie with Depp in it has to underperform nowadays just because he's in them, though. Alice 2 never had the momentum as the Pirates-sequels, and it was going against films like Finding Dory & The Angry Birds Movie. And the reception for that movie was pretty poor, hence the underperformance for that one. The first one, Alice in Wonderland seemed like a one-off.
Pirates 5 seems to have more going for it. A more popular Johnny Depp-character (Jack Sparrow). The franchise had very huge WW-successes with the sequels, and both Dead Man's Chest & On Stranger Tides made over $1B WW.
Even Into the Woods was a big hit, and that film had Depp as the side character. I mean it's not like he's suddenly a constant critical/quality poison or something.
Didn't mean it as a Depp thing, more of just an unwanted sequel I guess. The last Pirates movie was not exactly loved by GA. And its been a good long while.
At the end of the day, I think it will probably still do 200, but I think there's a chance it does much worse. Overseas totally different story. I'm sure it will clean up globally.

Sony moved Life back to March 24th after Fox released the release date for Alien.
In retrospect its easy for us to say the studio should have released this movie then and that movie then but it's not that simple. It's not just the studio deciding hey let's throw all these movies in March. They also have to look at the promo aka are the lead actors available to do promo during this time or not.
All very true ^^^

Pirates will make over 150M. It would be a disaster if not
I fully expect it to, but something about it screams Alice 2. That was a disaster exactly 1 year earlier. Honestly 175m dom wouldn't shock me one bit.

100%. There is an outside chance nothing else makes 150M. Though unlikely.

I agree. Kong should have avoided getting sandwiched between Logan & Disney. What made them think that March was suddenly summer? It seems that they were desperate to avoid opening a week before or after F8. They were also desperate to avoid opening one week before Guardians Vol. 2 Still, they got pretty crammed. I think that they feel they can counter-program B&B (which they probably view as a girly/family movie) along with a week older Logan. Slating films is always difficult.
Exactly. Everyone has skin in the game in March. They all figured someone would take a hit, but hoped it wouldn't be them.
No one felt confident enough to go up against even a diminished F8. Lets be honest, even if F8 drops a third of its audience, it will be the second biggest film of the year (presumably) up to that point after BatB.

Alien releases in May
Yep, forgot about that. Any idea if Sony announced the move after Fox gave the date?

So the studios have learned nothing since December 2005 when The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe and Peter Jackson's King Kong movie opened within a week of each other.
But March doesn't behave like the holidays. Totally different release pattern and legs. Too much depends on that first weekend outside December.

I had a solo at XXX Return of Xander Cage.
Incredibly I did NOT have a solo at Collide. One other dude walked in before it started. Absolutely massive auditorium. Was super weird.
