Playmobil confirms it's failure, despite being screened in 600+ cinemas. It should not go higher than 400k and will have its number of screenings drastically reduced. The market was already saturated, and the movie is followed closely by TS4 which is in its 7th week. TS4 also shows signs of stability after its huge drop last week due to the arrival of Pets 2.

I believe no one expected a hit, but I agree that the failure is 'too' due to market saturation, in fact this year the only animated film we can consider a success is Toy Story 4. However, the fact that Playmobil is being butchered by critics contributed to people losing interest in the movie.

The film's director, Lino DiSalvo, had never directed a movie in his career, the writers had never written anything either, unfortunately for fans of the brand, Playmobil: The Movie was an 'announced tragedy'...!!! 😭😭😡😡

  2. The film was screened at the Annecy Animation Festival for a select audience, unfortunately for me and Playmobil fans, the prediction of the most skeptical was confirmed, reviews and comments on the film are insulting, HR described the film as 'generic promotional tool without life' some comments claim to be a 'real disaster'...😢😢

It is certainly a huge step backwards for On Animation Studios, producer of the Playmobil: The Movie and also of the award-winning The Little Prince, On Animation was on the rise in the world animation scene.

I found it a big mistake to hire an inexperienced director, Lino DiSalvo had never directed anything, not even a short animation, was chosen because he was head of animation in Frozen, just for that. The director of the film would be Bob Persichetti, Oscar winner with Spiderverse, for unknown reasons was removed from the direction (better for him).

As big fan and collector of the toy, I'm going to watch the movie for sure, but the director of the film must apologize to fans for ruining our dreams.

  3. As a fan and collector of PLAYMOBIL I admit that everything that involves the film is very precarious, especially the marketing. Missing less than 4 months for the premiere in theaters worldwide (August 7 in France) we do not have a official poster yet, trailer we have only one and very strangely edited.

The budget of the movie is $ 80 million! With the same budget the Illumination does something much better!

I can’t see that. Especially with TS4 2 weeks later. I don’t think either of the two will do $1B.

I am considering more than $ 100 million in China! (Original Pets made $ 58 million in that country 3 years ago). In relation to TS4, TS3 made $ 1 billion worldwide without China! Imagine how big TS4 will be in China!

I don't envy STX in this situation. This has pretty much nothing going for it. Playmobil doesn't seem to have nearly as big a fanbase (in the US, at least) as Lego, and considering how much The Lego Movie 2 underperformed, I can't see this getting a big audience at all. If they don't just end sending it to Netflix (which I wouldn't rule out), I would say $20M DOM is the ceiling for this.

I agree that perhaps the Playmobil brand is not so well known in the U.S, but I still believe that a good story and a good script is more important than the value of a property. PLAYMOBIL fans are grateful for STX Films, we will do everything to make the film a success.

STX Films has more representation than the bankrupt Global Road, certainly was a good deal for PLAYMOBIL: The Movie!

PLAYMOBIL: The Movie over The Lego Movie 2 worldwide...!!!😁 Who lives will see!😉

  6. I watched the movie yesterday, five people in the session. Two weeks ago there was nothing 'marketing' for the movie in my theater, I watched 'How to Train Your Dragon' and 'Wreck-It Ralph' and did not see the trailer for 'The LEGO Movie 2'. Yesterday already had two great displays of the film, a little late do not think?

About the movie, it may sound a bit confusing to kids, but I liked it. It is clear that the film is produced for countries that have English as the official language, especially the United States, United Kingdom and Australia. It is almost certain that there will be no release in China, I believe it is the best thing to do, because it will almost certainly fail!

I think: At least OS I believe that PLAYMOBIL: The Movie (LEGO rival) will do more than 'The LEGO Movie 2'.

Does anyone believe that the US-initiated trade war with China could reflect a tighter embargo on american films?

I believe that in this war (chinese box office) US and Hollywood have a lot to lose!

It seems that my fear is about to become real. My opinion remains the same, Hollywood has a lot to lose, much more than China. Trump, the lunatic, is buying a fight with the whole world, harming his own people and country.

"From the wonderful people who brought you Monster Trucks"...now that will sell this movie.......

Don't even know why they are bothering with an American release for this film.....Playmobil did make a play in the American market, and failed miserably. Pretty much seen here as a blatant ripoff of Lego..and from the photos I have seen of Playmobil, seems to be a pretty accurate description.

The PLAYMOBIL figure was developed and launched in the market 5 years before the Lego figure, so if one company copied the other, it was Lego.

This is a disappointing development. Playmobil always felt like the wholesome alternative to Lego, and this could've been a different, lighter take on The Lego Movie if done right, but the history of live-action/animation hybrids makes me feel like respecting the feel of the source material isn't the goal of the production. Having the Monster Trucks people handle this is a bad idea in my opinion.

Opting to develop a hybrid was a big mistake of the director, I totally agree with you when it refers to 'disrespect' regarding the source material, I repeat, I can not imagine a PLAYMOBIL film being hybrid, not possible for this film to work.

About Monster Trucks, Lino DiSalvo was the director of the animation department at Paramount at the time, he must have been one of the creators of the film, but even before the beginning of production he left the studio. What really scares me is his approval of the film.

The studio and crew behind the PLAYMOBIL movie are the same as the acclaimed movie 'The Little Prince', meaning talented people are involved in the project, I did not understand why the studio had chosen (or allowed) to produce a hybrid film , since a totally animated film is his greatest success.

  9. Unfortunately, I have to 'wash my hands' about this movie. As a big fan and collector of this fantastic toy I have to admit that it is a difficult decision for me.

If there was any possibility of this movie to work out, the director Lino DiSalvo was in charge of burying when he chose to make a hybrid film. I can not imagine a PLAYMOBIL film being a hybrid, I believe that if the film were all animated, having a good story and a good script, even don't having a satisfactory box office, could be indicated the awards and have critical acclaim, but as a hybrid not will have both.

About Lino DiSalvo, he was the creative director of Paramount's animation department when the horrific 'Monster Trucks' hybrid began to be developed. Analyzing his tweet at the Monster Trucks launch, Lino does not seem to care about box office, let alone with critical approval.

To conclude, what makes me sad is that the failure of this film can affect the financial health of the promising French studio On Animation, the same one that produced the acclaimed 'The Little Prince', considering that the budget of the film PLAYMOBIL is $ 80 millions.
