  1. High Tech is indeed big in Israel, but American style geek culture is not. This is true not just for sci-fi, but also for Comic book films that are always relatively weaker compared the US. In fact this is true also with gaming culture, which is very small in Israel (and most people that play any video games seem to just play Fifa). I know some people who work in high tech, and they don't seem much more into geeky stuff than most people.

What Israelis do go for is Animated films (Israelis have far more children than Europeans or Americans), comedies (Ted, Ted 2, Hangover 2 and We're the Millers each made more than any superhero film has ever made), and more "traditional action" like Fast and Furious or James Bond.

Then again, I'm an Israeli that is interested in geeky things and sci-fi, but I'm still not interested in Star Wars, I just find those films incredibly overrated, most sci-fi films I have seen were better than Star Wars. I will probably see this one eventually, since I see so many films, but I won't see it in theatres..

I see..Israelis seem to be very serious people, not really into dreams and creativity.

I guess it was to be expected when you're surrounded by threatening neighbors in a dangerous region, you need to be down to Earth and realistic. I see it that way but maybe you'll disagree.

  2. While economics are not my area of expertise I tried to know more about ER in Brazil.

Last week the dollar was worth R$3.84 on average while this week seems to be around R$3.90. R$4 or more in one month can't be excluded.

I could be wrong because I don't know anything about finances or economics, how does that work? How could the Real go beyond R$4? How is the economy of Brazil? Thank you in advance for your answer

  3. So I just watched MJ1's performance compared to CF both DOM and OS and I must say I'm not impressed.

It lost around 90m DOM over CF and I even decreased OS. That is quite disappointing.

MJ2 will face disappointment about MJ1, currency issues because of the stronger dollar in most OS territories and a strong competition in China where it's already a very weak franchise.

So I just expect it to have CF numbers or slightly higher OS, at best.

    That's a bit worrying.

  4. From Goffe

The theater I usually go has already sold 1/3 of the tickets for the first showing. That's huuuuge over here, especially considering that the OW is still 2 months away and that SW was never popular here, films like Fantastic Four and Constantine sold more tickets than ROTS for example. People never, I mean never buy tickets in advance, Mockingjay 2 didn't sell ONE single ticket yet, and they're selling tickets for that movie for a month now.

  5. Mojo is again (sporadically) posting the Mexican box-office chart!

Meanwhile, Star Wars VII seems to be breaking pre-release records! It's going to be huge ...the original tre-quel is a cult classic.

Unfortunately the only available gross I could find for the entire saga is:

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones

    OW: US$3,387,551, 33,384,993 lc, 500 theatres.

    Extended OW: US$5,704,170, 56,215,736 lc, 500 theatres.

    Total: US$8,793,561, 87,487,992 lc.

which looks very underwhelming, it fizzled quite quickly. But market has grown exponentially since then. I'd be surprised if it opens with less than 150M lc.So I forecast over US$30M, but could go as high as US$40M if WOM is strong. Of course ER could suddenly improve or implode.

If there is a market in Latin America where SW7 can do well it's really Mexico

  6. I Believe that this film will play much better than expected, i live in Mexico and ticket sales started yesterday, and in the movie theaters of my town, there are 16 midnight showings, and 9 are already sold out, and the others are 70% full already... Quite fast considering that presale just started one day ago.

Prequels never were the big thing here, i dont know if it was because Star Wars isn´t big here, or was the prequel effect. But im sure that TFA will have an opening of +10 million.

Latin America will be Star Wars' most difficult region to conquer. Let's see if Disney will be able to create a new fan base in that region.

  7. Not good, AOTC and ROTS made about 800K, which if you look at the chart above, is nothing, and gets beaten by films all the time. ROTS made less than random stuff that most people haven't heard of like Space Chimps or Arbitrage. I don't expect anything huge from Star Wars in Israel.

Weird, as the biggest high tech pole outside the US I thought Israelis would be more into sci-fi and STar Wars or geeky things.
