China is the biggest overseas country guys. I am sure Disney won't b happy with the performance of Rogue One. Not only for the number itself but because it kind of shows that SW may never reach the heights of TFA again in a market that there was already a ton of room for growth

SW is OK obviously. It could be OK with North America alone. But it is my opinion that SW8 will show a respectable drop from TFA. I wouldn't call 1.5b an easy goal at all.

TFA may have been a huge succes in the short-run but in the long run, it may have done some  harm for the SW franchise. At least in some countries.

But on the other hand, I believe it was inevitable. Those countries were never into Star Wars. I bet a lot of people hadn't seen a single SW movie until TFA. It wouldn't have been easy task to gain them.

That's not the case in Asia only. I grew up in europe and I can tell you that during my adolescence there were very few guys from my age that had seen the SW movies. Like very very few. We knew star wars just from the toys.. It's not like all european countries are all in for SW. There are a lot of countries were it did from OK to not-so-good business.

Yeah, for Disney it won't be "just China", excuse me, "just China"??? It's the second biggest film market and a soon-to-be biggest market of the world. Disney has tried everything possible to save SW's future box office and merchandising in China with a desperate attempt, and it's very clear that they don't plan to give up at all. China is a promising market and Chinese moviegoers are easy to please, they just want to be entertained by an audience-friendly, creative movie with a decent plot and acting, it's not that hard, actually it's not a problem at all. They never reject and harass the new stuffs, then force the studio to make nostalgic films and call it "loyal to the original" like US fanboys. That fanboy's belief is so twisted and weird. I never imagined that SW brand would suffer this fate. but unfortunately, thank to TFA and SW fanboy, SW lost the chance.

  2. So Finn is your favourite character? We get it. I don't have any problems with him either. I watch SW because it's SW, simple as that, not because of any single characters. But people was talking about the fact that many Chinese moviegoers didn't like Finn, his acting was bad and awkward, they felt uncomfortable every time he showed up. It's not biased, it's the truth, the reality. Do you know that Han Solo is one of the most favourite TFA characters in Weibo's public poll, while Finn is left far behind? Ford's charm and acting woos the young audience, despite the fact that now he's just a supporting character and a 74-year-old actor.

Finn especially. I like Daisey Ridely, but John Boyega is awful to watch. =.= You have no idea how many times during Force Awakens I hope he gets killed off instead of Han Solo. LOL =/

But as I mentioned at the Int Box Office chat ( Getting lazy, so I will paste it here).

    It depends on numerous factors.

    1) R1's WOM is better than TFA in China, so can it gain some fans for Ep8?

    2) How much effort/marketing budget is Disney going to put for this? Or is it giving up on China?

    3) Will Carrie Fisher's death cause China movie-goers to support the movie? I mean many of them treat Paul Walker as their own after he is deceased, FF7 exploded at China's box office despite Paul Walker not being a big name there..but once he is deceased, all Chinese love him and watch the whole F&F series... Will this effect be the same for Carrie Fisher?

So... with all this in mind, Ep8 may still have a slight chance of doing well. It will do better than R1 IMO (exchange rate by then will be better too), but worse than TFA. TFA was the worst way to introduce Star Wars to the Chinese Audience IMO.

Many Chinese people that I talked to have reacted the same.  He gave them an unforgettable first impression. They felt like he was being in labor every time he showed up in the screen with his weird panting noises and awkward acting. Finn is Jar Jar Binks of this trilogy, but he isn't just a supporting character, he's the goddamn male lead, tada~~~

Just in China and some Asian countries.

I think it's just fine. Star Wars is very powerful in North America and European countries, not that strong but still decent in Lantin America. We can see that TFA earn a fantastic $2B worldwide and RO will still pass $1B, as the contribution of China, about 6% of total run, is not that crucial like some other films such as Transformers, it's impossible for Disney to give up American and European audiences and change the style to please Asian audiences.

In general, no film can satisfy everyone.

So... Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy will become the new King and Queen of Scifi, right? These two can please every markets, including US and China. I hope SW fanboys won't bitch and complain when the other franchises defeat SW's future movies in the worldwide BO, because they are the only one who want SW franchise to stay that way.

P/s: actually, in some European countries, Ro1 stayed in No.1 for a just a few days.

Yup, very bad... Those crap movies (really bad ones) like Great Wall and Railroad Tigers are above 8...
    Something is wrong....

I'm trying to read those negative feedbacks in Douban and Maoyan...  It's just... the same like before, people think Ro1 is a snoozefest, again! The first half of Ro1 is messy, it makes the Chinese audience feel impatient, people have to play with the game on their smartphone and wait for something better to happen...

  5. I agree with some people about "TFA was an unimaginative and uncreative movie", even Lucas felt the same, he was so upset with what Disney did to TFA, it made SW's universe look so poor. The main characters weren't well-received too. The US felt annoyed by Rey's marysue-ness, while the Chinese disliked Finn for being a weak, uncharismatic comic relief sidekick. Nostalgia is a real double-edged sword, it could give the grumpy old fans (who accept nothing but a vintage, look-exactly-like-the-original SW movie) a back-to-childhood festival, but it could also reduce the chance to gain new international fans for SW franchise.

That’s not bad. Many fans who watched MCU only care about Cap & Barkey(Winter-Shield Party) or Cap & Tony(Iron-Shield Party). Not only Team Cap or Iron but also fans were divided by Marvel in China after watching Civil War.

I understand. But i didn't mention the worst part, those young Chinese fans found Finn unheroic, weak and uncharismatic. Basically, they just ...hate him and try to ignore him as much as they can. They'd rather support the idea of ReyxKylo than Finn. ReyxKylo has already become popular and draws more attention than Finn/Rey's dynamic. But Finn is the main protagonist of this sequel, no one can undo it, the audience will be forced to see his face. I'm not against those fans and the couple they support (in fact, i like that idea. It has a potential to become an epic, complicated relationship/love story if Disney can execute it well), but it's unlikely that ReyxKylo will happen, i'm not even sure if Kylo can survive or not. I'm really worried about this triology's Chinese box office.

Huh... I don't know, because it's Goddamn Star Wars? The single most iconic film franchise in history?

And honestly, Avatar was average. It doesn't hold half a candle to anything Cameron's ever done, except for the 1st half of Titanic (which was boring as shit). Yes, it was visually impressive and all, but visuals are only gonna carry you for so long. It's all about story and characters in the world of storytelling. Avatar's story and characters.... not that impressive. That movie's trump card is the worldbuilding, and that's it. The story's bland and awfully familiar (Pocahontas & Dances With Wolves say hi), which'd be excusable w/good characters... and I can't remember anyone from the movie. I can only remember blue people. And the only reason why it had the legs it did was because it was riding big on the coattails of the IMAX 3D breakthrough. Avatar 2 is NOT reaching those heights unless Cameron figures out some other new epic innovation, like IMAX 4D or Ultra 6K or whatever, when the theater's chairs tickle you everytime sex scenes happen during the movie.

Avatar 2's gonna do well, but you are becoming so obnoxious w/your Cameron dick sucking that I'm starting to kinda hope that it underperforms, just to see your reaction.

13-D movie can be a hit.

RO may only earn 50% of what TFA did.

Ep8 won’t drop. TFA did mixed more like AOU(both of them 7.1/10 on fans website Douban). Many fans were annoyed that Cap protected Barkey after he knew Tony’s parents were killed by his best friends, and some audience can’t understand the complex relationships between so many people(My parents asked me why Barkey won’t get old after 20 years, they didn’t know Cap and Barkey are WWII soldier). Ep8 still have hope if the story can be more friendly to audience who don’t know much about SW.

Oh, it's great to hear that, so far I've only chatted with some Chinese fangirls on tumblr and they said that they're only rooting for ReyxKylo (as i remember, they named that couple Reylo) and don't care about the others. Well i mean SW franchise has more elements than just ...Rey and Kylo but they're only interested in that couple...  :sadben:

IMO, MCU and SW are different. MCU is very broad, consisting of a wide range of characters. "Dr Strange" is very different from " Ant Man", which is very different from "The Avengers", so you can release those 6 months apart. Sure, they throw some overlap in there to keep the universe connected and build the overall MCU brand, but those are different films, different stories.

But there's a reason that while they release MCU movies every year, they space the ones specifically about the Thors and Captain Americas and Iron Mans out to every 2-3 years. Fatigue Danger.

In contrast, a Star Wars movie is a Star Wars movie. It's really just one line of films, so the fatigue factor is present with R1.

yeah, a superheroes franchise which releases many movies with the same formula, same type of protagonists/ antagonists for over 7 years but still doing fine and doesn't give a sh*t about the thing called "superheroes fatigue". And the usa's beloved franchise which will only release one movie per year until 2019 and now some clueless internet dudes are starting to worry about "SW fatigue"...

No one pays attention to movie news except industry people or fans. Your average person isn't gonna be noticing or paying attention to either the original news or the links provided by various geek sites.

You're right that any sort of AVATAR interest is basically in total hibernation right now. However, wait until a few months before release with the full weight of a massive Fox marketing campaign (and the ability to use the phrase "from James Cameron, the director of Aliens, T2, Titanic, and Avatar"), and presumably some cool-looking kickass footage, and those same indifferent people will now be either excited or curious. There are some who really didn't like the first AVATAR, so they won't see the second... but that's okay.

All of those things need to happen in order for A2 to be a success. But do you really doubt any of them?

Honestly, why is James Cameron even trying at this point? With Avatar I mean. He always meant Avatar to be the Star Wars for this generation and the first one had a rough start. It's fun to look at, but it's boring as hell and it had ZERO cultural impact. No one talks about that film. It has influenced nothing. I've seen TV commercials that affected people more than Avatar. He has taken so long getting this thing going and unfortunately Star Wars has literally started again.

I think James Cameron just needs to move on.

Is there though? I'm honestly not trying to troll since I love the first film, I just don't think Avatar has anywhere near the fanbase at this point that the first Terminator or Alien film had. Those films got more and more popular with each passing year after they were released, and by the time the sequels were about to come out they were more popular than ever. Yes Avatar was huge in its initial run, but I still don't think it has maintained much relevance among the GA. And each passing year does matter because it gets further and further in the back of the GA's minds. I honestly feel like a lot of people are saying "so what?" to these sequels at this point. They will need to knock it out of the park with marketing right out of the gate. I think this will very much be its predecessor all over again in having to convince the GA to get on board first with great marketing and then with great WOM. If it lacks either of those, then it will fail. This is not a hype movie.

    Hard to disagree :)

Avatar does not have that crazy fanbase like Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings. :) We are not in 2009 anymore.
