  1. I don’t know if some Freaky Friday shit happened to Peter Berg because “Mile 22” embodies all of the trappings of a Bay film, but somehow maintains Berg’s style. Oh crap. This is Peter Berg unleashed. The opening sequence lets you know right away that this is very much a Peter Berg film. It features all of the requirements: Violence, gore, guns, patriotic themes, people whose occupation involves some sort of national security, Marky Mark, and John Malkovich. Seriously, if you thought “Patriot’s Day” was Berg’s political stance, “Mile 22” continues that conversation as he channels his inner Michael Bay, and it is not good.

  2. I was so close to handing the “Why The Fuck Do You Even Exist” award to “Sherlock Gnomes” this year, but “Slender Man” just had to be dumped on us.

Eventually, I did some research and it hit me that this movie isn't based on anything related to the true premise of Slender Man. This isn't based on the game Slender or the Slender Man stabbings of 2014. The only thing the movie is based off of is the name Slender Man.

If you’ve seen “The Blair Witch Project”, “IT”, “The Bye Bye Man”, “Sinister”, and most specifically “The Ring”, then you do not need to see “Slender Man”, for its premise is the standard, traditional horror movie narrative where teenagers unleash an evil that takes effect on them after watching a video they weren’t supposed to.

If you want a good Slender-related thing that’s actually scary and tense JUST PLAY SLENDER. Read the original Creepypasta, read fanfiction, just don’t see this movie. You have this interesting figure that made the internet quiver in fear for a year and you give him the most basic and generic horror storyline, and to top it off you release it in 2018 when nobody gives a shit?!

  3. I’m not going to lie: I found myself enjoying this more than I thought I would. It’s much more campy and fun than other shark movies I’ve seen in the past. As far as shark movies go, it’s not as great as “Jaws” or “The Shallow”, but it is definitely the third best one on the list.

For a $150 million dollar budget, “The Meg” our all of the effects to good use. The effects of the Megalodon are great for sequences involving the characters getting eaten. The Meg has a believable appearance that makes some of the kills look insane and terrifying. It’s not on the same ironic level as “Sharknado” or as outdated as “Deep Blue Sea”. Even the underwater research facility base that most of the film takes place in looks incredible.

One of my biggest issues with the previous Pooh movie was how short it was. In actuality, “Winnie the Pooh” (2011) had a running time of one hour, yet it was damn near perfect. The movie was well-paced and told a delightful tale, but it would have benefited from being longer. After watching this, I think it's safe to say I’m glad all the other Pooh movies clocked in barely past an hour long because a little bit of Pooh and his friends goes a looooong way. When the stuffed animals all get to the real world and infiltrate the city of London, the movie goes from being silly and wacky to loud and manic, WHICH IS NOT WINNIE THE POOH!

Right after the 15 minute mark, there is a drastic shift of tone from dark and mature to comical and goofy. There is a scene of war in the movie, and then you have Christopher Robin at work where his boss is bumbling as he knocks over briefcases and then his coworkers hide as they eavesdrop on their meeting.

Did an executive from the studio say, “We’re Disney. We can’t let this be smart and dignified. We’ll be as silly as ALL OF OUR CURRENT MOVIES ARE!” If this was released in 2013 or a decade ago, that tone would have been consistent. Ever since,“The Last Jedi” I’ve been seeing a trend of Disney movies only consisting of comedy. With the exception of “Infinity War”, ALL of Disney’s features have been either inconsistent in tone or just going straight up comical. I really like “Incredibles 2” but I only see it as more of a comedy than a Pixar movie with emotional depth and substance. The inconsistency is present there, and it’s present here and I’m really tired of it. Disney following the comical slapstick route goes against the true nature of these characters. As a matter of fact, they’re doing a disservice to these characters.

  5. For a movie that’s supposed to be a buddy feature, Kate McKinnon and Mila Kunis barely have any chemistry. Their comedy styles are significantly different where McKinnon is more physical and expressive and Kunis is verbal and can do various deliveries, mostly sarcastic and deadpan. Their styles don’t mesh well together, which results in them looking lost and playing their standard character types. Their interactions with each other rarely seem organic because they’re still playing familiar characters we already know them as. McKinnon’s character (Morgan) is pretty much a variation of McKinnon’s characters from SNL; Kunis’ Audrey is pretty much Jackie from “That 70s Show”. Kunis and McKinnon are hilarious comedic actresses, but they don’t have the comedic chemistry to carry the feature, for it seems that they’re just battling each other to mug at the screen. Because of their dynamic not being fully convincing, a lot of the supposed highlighted scenes of comedy fall flat.

They share fun moments together whenever McKinnon is not going over the top or has to friggin AD LIB ALL THE TIME. Mila Kunis is mostly carrying the movie for her character has a decently written arc where the film centers on Audrey finding her independence. It’s a nice message the film tries to convey, even though IT TOOK 2 FRIGGIN' HOURS TO GET THERE. Plus, Paul Feig did it better with “Spy”.

What “Fallout” primarily benefits from is how it isn’t just a latest installment where Ethan is doing a new mission, but it is the first actual continuation in a way where his actions in the previous film carry over into this, which raises the stakes for our characters, primarily Ethan.

If you’re familiar with the humor of “Teen Titans Go!”, the film is faithful to capturing the comedic tone of the series but surprisingly doesn’t rely on the juvenile jokes as often. Oh yeah, the juvenile humor is sparse and instead targets the superhero movie genre in the most irreverent, meta way possible and it’s relentlessly funny.

Unapologetically meta with irreverent tongue-in-cheek humor that captures the best and worst of the series, “Teen Titans Go! To the Movies” is a surprisingly hysterical satirical comedy that is fun for the whole family.

  8. Heartwarming, charming, and has enough musical numbers to get your toes tapping, "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" is an Abba-solute super trouper of a sequel that is marginally better than it's predecessor.

I swear it feels as if Burnham was watching “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” one day and said, “What the hell? This isn’t what middle school was like!!” Whereas other filmmakers would diminish the realities of middle school by pandering to a younger demographic, Burnham grounds the entire story in reality. He isn’t hyperbolic with his characters, but he perfectly portrays character types that we’ve all known in middle school. The way his characters talk to each other is real and akin to people that we’ve most likely encountered in our lives.

  10. Before walking into “Skyscraper” one must master the art of being brain dead. This is a movie that wants you to valet park your brain at door and make sure it’s not turned on for the entire duration of the film. You saw the trailer. You saw the poster. You knew what you were getting into. You better suspend your disbelief or the movie will forcibly suspend it for you.

Though it is brainless, ‘Skyscraper’ lacks both the fun and the Dwayne Johnson charm audiences expect to see.

  11. For “Sorry to Bother You” being the directorial debut for rapper-turned-filmmaker Boots Riley, the film is without a doubt his magnum opus. From the very beginning to the end, Riley stylistically sets the tone of his own world and creates his own set of rules by primarily showing off how lawless this world is. The story starts off light and silly but where it goes is absolutely nothing you would expect, especially if you’re going by the trailers. You think this movie is mostly about black people using a white voice to get up in the world of the working class, but boy are you wrong. Shit, as bizarre as that is, that is just the basis of the first act. From there on out, you are treated to surreal and creative discussions centered on American labor, consumerism, race, wealth, fame, and so much more.

  12. Ahhh but see I saw the film and to everyone's positive reaction, this left me feeling sour. With “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation“ the film relies so much on the humor that the visual gags take the front seat, animation takes the back, and the story is in the trunk.

  13. I was surprised with how much I enjoyed the film to be honest.  It has been legend (or a known fact, I suppose) that NBA players can’t act to save their life. Shaq in “Kazaam” and Michael Jordan in “Space Jam” are prime examples of that. In a surprising turn of events, Kyrie Irving has finally broken that curse for his performance carries the movie. It’s not just the unrecognizable face that is a factor to his performance, but his performance itself. Not only is he unrecognizable by his makeup but his delivery is on point, his comedic timing is amazing, his old man voice is convincing as hell. Even when he has to be dramatic, Irving delivers. He’s been playing Uncle Drew for 5 years now so he knows this character like the back of his hands. You often forget that Irving is under all of that makeup until he shows off his basketball skills.

Hell, even Shaq gives a good performance and IT’S SHAQ! The film gets some great mileage out of him and provides a good character arc between him and Drew. Irving has great chemistry with the rest of his cast. Performance-wise, “Uncle Drew” might be the only movie where NBA stars can deliver good performances.

  14. As far as these typical Warner Bros. R-rated summer comedies go, this is one of their most inventive ones yet. That being said, it still falls under the same trappings of the bunch when it comes to humor.

“Tag” has more style than solid script, but manages to (I can’t believe I’m saying this) use its artistry to be creative. Also THERE IS A SCRIPT! Thankfully this is not one of those comedies that try to float by doing with nothing but ad-libbing. The majority of the time, when the team is playing tag, director Jeff Tomsic successfully makes the viewer a part of the fun where shots are constructed to follow whoever is either “it” or being chased from being “it”.

  15. Word of advice, before you see “Incredibles 2”, watch the first film, or at least the last five minutes, because right when the movie begins, the Parr family wastes absolutely no time getting to work. The time jump between this and the predecessor has to be the shortest time jump in cinema since “The Raid 2.” The film literally starts off mere seconds after the events of the first so as we were aging for the past 14 years, the Parrs stayed the same. Well, not really. Since it has been 14 years, the resources and advancement of technology used for animation has changed. And Pixar has once again knocked it out of the park in animation standards.

  16. Ari Aster may have a thing for disturbing dysfunctional families and his first feature, "Hereditary" proves that. If you've seen his short "The Strange Thing About the Johnsons" then you're ready for "Hereditary".

The cast delivers decent performances, but “Hereditary” primarily lies on the shoulders of Toni Collette's performance. She is a powerhouse in this movie to an extent that I will start my campaign for her receiving a Best Actress nomination in 3, 2, NOW!

A24 does a great job with marketing their features, but I feel like somehow some elements of the film should’ve been in the trailer. In the beginning of the second act, a huge shift occurs that turns the overall story into an entirely different movie. If they revealed one of the twists that occurs in the second act to market the film, then you would have a better idea of what the story is about. The shift adds an emotional depth to the story and furthers the plot and the insanity of the supernatural elements Annie experiences.

  17. If this was released in the 80s alongside the movies that inspired it, such as “The Terminator” and “Robocop,” this would’ve blown audiences’ minds. Now, while it isn’t mind-blowing, it is a nostalgic action roller coaster thrill ride that harkens back to the films of the 80s. In a time like today where every summer release is a tent pole CG fest, “Upgrade” is a release that feels more refreshing than ever. This 5 million dollar budgeted feature has all the elements to be that bloated action flick but, thanks to Leigh Whannell’s experience in working in low-budget flicks, “Upgrade” thankfully looks as great in quality as your average blockbuster. All of the effects are practical and the action is brilliantly choreographed to make this layered action flick feel like an exhilarating awesome time.

If there was any movie to solidify my thoughts on the upcoming “Venom” film sucking, “Upgrade” is it. “Upgrade” features:

    - Brilliant action sequences with outstanding choreography
    - Gory violence
    - An emotional narrative
    - A Tom Hardy lookalike that I keep forgetting isn’t Tom Hardy

By god is Woodley acting her ass off. Thank Goodness she left those Divergent movies behind her and moved on to bigger and more mature roles such as “Big Little Lies” where she delivered a brilliant performance alongside all these experienced actresses. Between those Divergent films and “Big Little Lies” you can see her growth as a powerful actress and it shows in “Adrift” where she is (both literally and figuratively) steering the ship with her performance. She’s not this glamorous heroine who has to save the world, but a woman who tragically must overcome the events she went through in order to save herself.

  20. This the first major movie of 2018 I've walked out of. I normally don't do that with feature films but I made a rule to where if a comedy doesn't make me laugh within an hour of it's running time, I'm out.

An hour went by and I didn't crack neither a smile or a chuckle so I bounced.

While I walked out of the film, I didn't feel any anguish but in fact disappointment towards Knoxville. Why attach a narrative to your stunts? By attaching an actual narrative, you’re decreasing the value and the special uniqueness of your brand.

  21.

If “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” taught me anything it is that some stories from famous writers shouldn’t be adapted by stylistic directors because they’ll stray from the source material and make it their own thing. Many films have done it before and this is one of those movies. If you’re going to watch a good movie based on a Gaiman story, you already have “Stardust” and “Coraline”. Go watch those.

  22. Saw the film at the press screening last week and it was a lot of fun.

Reese, Wernick, and Reynolds has proven once again that they know this beloved character in and out so much that they never seem to lose focus of his stories being HIS stories. Besides capturing the superhero and humorous aspects of him, they maintain Wade’s humanity by displaying his emotional side. The majority of this plot focuses on Wade’s reaction to tragedy and trying to get in control of his feelings. Here, we see him at his very worst where he has to face reality and the consequences of his actions. Just like its predecessor, this is another character story that displays the depth of Deadpool in ways we’ve never witnessed before.

One of my biggest issues with Deadpool 2 is that there is a point in the movie, right in the second act, where it peaks in hilarity and absurdity. The sequence where all of the X-Force are killed an insanely graphically way that could’ve been taken straight out of “South Park” but leaves you in both shock and laughter to a point that will have you wheezing.

But here’s the thing: not only is the film unable to make you erupt in laughter as hard as that sequence (until the post credits sequence which might be the best post credit sequence in a comedy movie since the meta end credit sequence in “22 Jump Street”) but they don’t give you enough airtime for you to catch your breath. Because of the film not being able to let you breathe after shelling out joke after joke, you start to feel the film’s length which by any means does not need to be close to two hours.

  23.

For a film focused on women reading “Fifty Shades of Grey” and applying it to their love lives, this is marginally better than watching any one of the “Fifty Shades” movies which doesn’t really say much.

If I may be bluntly honest, this movie isn’t for me. I am far from this movie’s demographic so a lot of my complaints against the film, such as the functionality of Bumble not being accurate to the application service itself, most likely wouldn’t matter to a person over 50 going out to see this movie. If you are a woman over 40 and looking for a fun romantic comedy for you and your spouse (or hell, just yourself), “Book Club” is just for you.
