Just finished watching the 2009 Film, Moon it's a gem with Sam Rockwell that I apparently missed.

Love this movie. My favorite science fiction film of the last I-don't-know-how-many-years.

Thought-provoking, unpredictable story that subverts more than one genre trope, great performance by Sam (who's perfectly cast), terrific production design and great-looking practical VFX.

I mean if RJ is correct in saying he could do whatever he wanted then I don’t think the above people do much besides make sure the novels and comics don’t veer too far off course

If TLJ didn't land for you I can see how you'd feel that way.

But both Rayne & Pablo Hidalgo have tweeted that they were sold on RJ's story since his first pitch. I think they're more progressive (and subversive) in terms of story than you might think. I think this has roots in Filoni's apprenticeship w/Lucas during production of the Clone Wars, and it's continuing now with Filoni in charge of Rebels.

It will be VERY interesting to see what they do with the upcoming TV project.

p.s. Don't know if you've read the new-canon comics, but they can be pretty weird.

Kathleen Kennedy is basically the Kevin Feige of the Star Wars films. Kennedy fires directors and controls which direction the movies go.

And her creative deputies are both women. Kiri Hart is SVP for Development and Rayne Roberts is head of the story group.

Thanks. Got it for XMas but I haven't read it yet.  Like to see what just they say in context.

(Though that makes it even more interesting that the next trilogy was greenlit when it was)

((Though maybe they also knew that announcing it AFTER TLJ premiered would be seen as an... interesting attempt to control the news cycle ))

RJ said something yesterday or the day before that I thought was really illuminating. Words to the effect of, whether it was because of TLJ or not, the conversation we're having now about the franchise -- i.e., when does the past die and how & who does the killing -- was going to happen sooner or later.

I think LFL figured the band-aid had to come off eventually, and I think they're actually trying to have it both ways. TFA, RO, the Han Solo film, and the Obi-Wan (?, I'm presuming) standalone are the nostalgic fan service. I think they are hoping that TLJ will lay the groundwork to tell new stories that won't be hamstrung by all that nostalgia, and in the process, bring new fans on board.

  5. No luck (yet) finding that tweeted reaction to the Art of The Last Jedi book about LFL knowing the film would be divisive, but I did find this interesting bit from the book's author

I know it's kind of a dead horse that TLJ was some kind of FU to all the fan theorizing and speculation, but if there were any lingering doubts, there it is. The story for TLJ has been locked since August 2014.

It also confirms that the basic starting point for Luke's arc in both ST films, that he was in exile, estranged from The Force due to some kind of inciting incident, was Lucas'.

That's what I meant about 'blind spot'.  Collectively, for whatever reason, they didn't see this level of controversy coming.

FWIW, some of the capsule reviews that dropped on Twitter of the "Art of The Last Jedi" book hint that TPTB @ LFL knew full well that this film would be controversial/divisive.

I’ve heard a few people mention they enjoyed it more the second time around. I guess knowing what to expect helps.

Definitely improved for me the 2nd time.

I went from decidedly mixed about it to absolutely loving it, despite a few gripes. Haven't been able to stop thinking about it all day.

It's the only non-OT movie I'd put in my top tier of SW films (ANH, ESB, TLJ).

He is truly as good as it gets at his profession.

One of the film composers (I think it was the guy who writes music for the Marvel movies) in the documentary "Score" had a good quote. Something to the effect of, "as good as his reputation is, and as good as everyone says he is, he's even better than that."

He's on a level with Gershwin, Copland, Bernstein, Ellington, etc. Towering figure in American music and unquestionably the greatest film composer of all time.

  9. Many (maybe all?) of the large format venues (including our one "real" IMAX at Regal Pointe Orlando) in metro Orlando seem to be offering 2D showings of TLJ, but none are during prime-time. There's usually one lunchtime show around 1130 or 1230 that's 2D.

Better than nothing, I guess. But the chains around here are still milking that 3D cow during normal hours.

The big IMAX at MODS in Ft. Lauderdale is also showing a mix of 2D & 3D, with more variety in the showtimes. This used to have 70mm, but it was replaced last year :(

I don't mind "the dumb scientists" as much as I do "the dumb pilots" who

      Hide contents

suddenly blindly follow the order of the suddenly messianic captain to trash the expensive spaceship into the indestructible alien ship, thereby removing the only means of getting everybody out of the alien planet. What motivates Elba's character to go on a suicide run ? How a pair of civilian pilots would just decide to be martyrs without any character development??

Yep. Don't get me started ;) It's a beautiful movie to look at, but the story and characters didn't work for me at all.

  11. Saw it last night. Needs a premium format to be fully appreciated but if you have the choice do not spend an extra dime to see it in 3D. We saw it in 4K RealD and 3D added NOTHING, to the point where I think they maybe deliberately underplayed the 3D effects to keep the image clarity and brightness. Had 3D glasses but it looked like a 2D film. Seeing it in Dolby Atmos 2D on Sunday and I think that's where it's at for this movie, or 4K or 70mm IMAX if you have one.

    Anyway --

Read a few reviews, at least the summaries, and I think I agree with everything that's been said, pro & con. How that all works out for you in the wash is going to be different for everybody.

One thing I will say: critics who have said this movie is playing it "safe" are bat**** insane. There is NOTHING safe about any of the choices made in this movie.

And there is nothing kiddified, Disneyfied, slapstick or dopey/goofy. THANK GOD.

It's got some cohesion problems in the middle, when I think the plot gets a little muddled, and it could use some more depth in the characters (TFA is much better in that regard, IMO), but everything else is pretty terrific. It looks amazing. All of the combat sequences are incredibly well-done.

Re: the relative merits of Acts I, II, III. Act I is gangbusters. Suspenseful, taught storytelling. I thought it was a masterful set up and the "choppy pacing" criticism about the character intros didn't bother me a bit. That wouldn't have even occurred to me as a thing if I hadn't heard it going in. I *do* think that things in Act II apart from the action sequence get kinda confusing. I had problems following some of the dialog at times. A little bit too much of the "faster! more intense!" thing going on, I think and the accents from some of the non-native English speakers don't help. Otherwise, I felt like the story got a bit needlessly convoluted. As for Act III, well, yeah. What everyone else said.

Diego Luna's character was the big surprise for me. I thought he was quite richly drawn and complex and Diego's performance was very well-done and masterfully underplayed.

Comments from Nitty McNitsterston: I thought the score was a little too prominent in the sound mix. It's like, if you're going to boost the soundtrack like that, you better be John F*ing Williams, and unfortunately JW is not the composer here. M. Giacchino wrote the score in about 4 weeks, so that's not a slam on him, but if you're a big JW fanboy like me, you will certainly miss him.

Oh, if you're a quasi-hardcore fan and didn't read Catalyst, READ CATALYST. It ties in with that book very well and that book provides a lot of backstory for Galen & Krennic and

that the film doesn't have time to go into . There are some nice touches that reward having read the book, too -- flashback-type things that are very well-done.

    Absolutely true.

My wife and I re-watched ANH the other night.

There's an establishing shot of the Falcon after it's left the Death Star, where there are three elements moving in the frame: the camera is panning left, the star field is shifting to the right, and the Falcon is doing this slip maneuver where it's simultaneously yawing around to the right and pitching up a little bit at the same time.

Gives me chills every time. One of my favorite VFX shots of any film, ever.

It's a very good scene.  But I do wish we got to follow another Jedi just a little more closely throughout just so it had a little more impact.

Granted, this is a bit of "day late, dollar short", but The Clone Wars series on Netflix goes deeply into the back stories of most (all?) of those Jedi that we see get killed in that sequence.

Worth watching for that and other good reasons, but like all Star Wars, it has its ups & downs. At its best, though, it's terrific.

what star wars movies has everyone seen in theaters? i'm 21 and for me it's only been rots and tfa (and ro as of 2 days from now)

All of them, when originally released, except special editions for TESB & ROTJ. Edit: I also didn't see the Clone Wars theatrical release.

    I was 11 in May of 1977.

There are two things I wish every human could experience as they happened: the Apollo Moon landings and 1977 Star Wars.

What was the major complaint(s) about Prometheus ?

Character actions that didn't seem logical/rational.

A story that set up a lot of interesting questions that it didn't answer, or didn't answer very satisfactorily for a lot of people. Sequel-baiting, basically.

An ending that felt a bit too much like fan service.

Production design (at least for the Engineers) that deliberately de-emphasized Giger's influence.
