Disney’s $120M young female production The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is expected to be pounded to dust this weekend with an opening around $20M at 3,766 theaters, 69% of that count offering 3D with 202 Premium Large Format screens and 150 D-BOX/4D auditoriums. Previews began at 6PM last night. We’ll have their Thursday night figure soon. Critics are tap dancing on The Nutcracker, which isn’t exactly a ballet-driven movie for better or for worse, with a 31% RT score.

Paramount has the Tyler Perry comedy Nobody’s Fool at 2,400 theaters and previews last night that began at 7PM earning $600K. Net production cost for the Tiffany Haddish and Tika Sumpter comedy was $19M. Tracking has the movie in the mid teens.

    Quote

20th Century Fox/New Regency/GK Film’s Bohemian Rhapsody struck a chord last night to the tune of $3.9M in Thursday night previews that began at 7PM.

Compared to other musical-themed features of late, Universal’s Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again made $3.4M on its Thursday before a $14.2M Friday, and $34.95M opening back in July. Then there’s Warner Bros.’ A Star Is Born which posted $3.2M in its Thursday night previews not counting its Wednesday sneaks cash which in total was $4.55M. That led to a $15.6M Friday and $42.9M opening weekend last month.

It’s been a while since there’s been a major studio music biopic and their range of openings are quite wide. On the high end, there’s Universal’s NWA movie Straight Outta Compton ($24.1M Friday, $60.2M weekend) and then there’s movies such as Oscar winners Ray ($6.6M Friday, $20M) in 2005 and the Johnny Cash and June Carter love story Walk the Line ($7.6M Friday, $22.3M opening). Compton is arguably the biggest grossing one at the domestic B.O. with $161.1M.

Yesterday being a Halloween hangover type-of-day, eight out of the top 10 films were down from Wednesday in their daily grosses; the only two seeing spikes were A Star Is Born with $1.4M, +10% for a fourth week of $19.9M and running total of $154.5M, and A24’s mid90s which drew $240K, +19%, for a $4.1M week, $4.4M two week total. Meanwhile Universal/Miramax/Blumhouse’s Halloween dropped 72% yesterday with an estimated $1.5M from its Wednesday Halloween day total of $5.5M. The David Gordon Green-directed slasher sequel counts $139.4M through two weeks.

While it’s often written that the weekend that lands prior to or around Halloween is deathly slow, it really depends on what the studios put on the marquee. We could have said the same thing about the third weekend in October, that it’s just a platform for lackluster wares, a pig pile of counter-programming. But Universal/Miramax/Blumhouse’s Halloween proved that business theory wrong last weekend with the second best start ever for the month with $76.2M. And the horror sequel is showing again that there’s money to be made at the end of October with a $33.3M second weekend, -56%. Tonight the David Gordon Green-directed sequel will slash past the $100M mark with a $10.3M Friday after a $94.7M first week, and by Sunday Halloween will stand at $128M.

The amount of money which Halloween is set to make is generally what a strong movie makes in the final corridor of October, i.e. Puss in Boots ($34M), Saw III ($33.6M), and Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa ($32M). However, this weekend, none of the studios wanted to compete in the wake of Halloween and really didn’t push their best fare out there. Lionsgate has another meat-and-potatoes Gerard Butler action thriller Hunter Killer which they took U.S. and U.K. rights on. The Donovan Marsh-directed submarine movie made $420K at 2,200 screens last night and is poised to make $2.4M today and $7.2M over three-days in 4th place at 2,720. Universal has the third Johnny English movie, Johnny English Strikes Again of which the U.S. is an afterthought with the Working Title pic shooting past the $100M threshold with $15M alone from the UK. The Rowan Atkinson comedy is only in play at 544 locations and it’s nothing fantastic with a $1.1M weekend after a $400K Friday.

Holding firm in spots 2 and 3 will be Warner Bros./Live Nation’s A Star Is Born and Sony’s Venomboth looking at respective fourth weekends of $12.5M(-34%), and $9.5M (-47%). The Bradley Cooper-directed movie by Sunday will stand at $147M while Venom will have a running total of $185.9M.

Faring well is A24’s expansion of Jonah Hill’s Los Angeles street skateboard teen drama Mid90s which in an expansion from 4 locations to 1,206 is looking at a $1.3M Friday,  weekend 2 of $3M, 10-day of $3.3M.

So, why haven't we heard about Venom 2 yet? By any which method that you break down the numbers, Venom is a big hit. And we know they wanted to set it up for a franchise, sequel, Spidey-verse, and all that jazz.

So where's the news about Venom 2?

Is it possible that they don't have Tom Hardy locked in to a contract?

Are they waiting to try to figure out what shooting schedule would fit around Tom Hardy's other projects?

Or are they trying to talk Tom Hardy into a detailed schedule right now, where he makes cameos in 2 films, guest-stars in 2 others, and is the lead in at least 3, only two of which will be direct Venom sequels? (The other could be a Spider-Man movie or something like that.)

Tom Hardy was recently interviewed about his upcoming role in this comic book movie. During the interview, he made the reveal that Sony has locked him down for a three-movie deal.

Remember with It and The Nun, their grosses were goosed by Imax theaters and those are being relegated to Universal/DreamWorks’ First Man. In Friday morning estimates as of 6:54AM, The Damien Chazelle-directed Neil Armstrong biopic epic ended its first week with an estimated $21.4M after a third place take of $1.09M yesterday. In first, winning every weekday this week is Warner Bros. A Star Is Born which earned an estimated $2.7M, -8% from Wednesday for a two week running total of $107.1M. Sony’s Venom is second with $2.08M Thursday, -7% from Wednesday, for $153M through 14 days. The studio’s family pic Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween earned an estimated $19.1M in week one after a fourth place Thursday of $699K, +17%. Warner Bros.’ Smallfoot made $598K last night, +28%, for a three week running total of $59.8M. 20th Century Fox’s Bad Times at the El Royale slotted sixth Thursday with $524K, -13% from Wednesday for a one week take of $10M.
