With those postrak scores it looks like MCU is a millennial franchise now, and they are slowly aging out to become the new old people that don’t go to theaters anymore demographic.Video Game movies are going to be driven by Gen Z, and drive the theaters going forward.
Also probably doesn’t help to set up all your heroes to be replaced by females for the male skewing franchise.
(Kate, Shuri, Love, Iron Heart, Cassie, etc).
And have zero easy identifiable overarching story for the last 4.5 years in your shared universe.
No don’t say that! I am a Millennial and I don’t want to accept my old age of 30
Though it makes sense, Millennials grew up in the 90’s to early 00’s when superhero cartoons were all the rage! Also explains why Mario was huge (Zelda will be just as huge!)! Also we millennials grew up with video games too (ie MK, Zelda, Mario, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Smash Bros!)

Rihanna hasn't sold more. lol
She has actually, only Madonna has sold more than her. I like Taylor and she could very well beat both Madonna and Rihanna (and Mariah, who is above Taylor currently) but right now, as of 2023, she hasn’t.
Taylor is definitely the biggest artist currently active however and she’s a lot bigger than the names mentioned before (Britney, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Bierber, Drake…etc).

With this weekend, Blue Beetle is now likely to overtake Dark Phoenix ($65.9M) and maybe even Morbius ($73.9M) if late legs are good.
Small victories! Make those legs point to it finding an audience on VOD and becoming a true success there

Are there any major markets left for BB or It's already playing everywhere (but China)?Australia, China, Japan and Korea. Probably won’t get a China date, unless WB removes a few certain lines from the film and i have no idea about Japan or Korea. Australia releases in two weeks

What? You're telling me you don't wanna see more of such amazing smash-hit characters like Shazam, Black Adam, and Blue Beetle?
If all DC has to offer is Batman and his cast of characters then they should just stop and throw in the towel.
As for me, I’d love to see more Shazam, Black Adam and especially Blue Beetle. Those are cool characters whose potential was squandered by a bad shared universe.
oh well, at least Xolo is returning and maybe he’ll get another shot with a series on Max or a team up film (Titans/Young Justice). His reach storyline is too good not to adapt! Scarab Wars looks to be a banger as well

There’s a reason why I put “Expectations Manger” in my profile 🙃
My biggest concern is not lack of demand based on product, but a lack of supply. This year there is probably higher awareness, longer operating hours to accommodate, and (hopefully) better seat allocation (like for family movies), and I would buy the argument that this year is ahead in admits at 6pm … but a Sunday night in August, with so many schools already or going back in, will be a limiting factor that I just can’t see it staying ahead at final bell.
Just going by my local theaters, many of the earlier shows have sold out (Barbie, Blue Beetle, GT) as well as the afternoon shows, but once you get to the later times (anything passed 8:30) is where I see a slow down. Still though, I’m guessing those will be filled in by college age individuals and young adults who work night shifts.
I think this years NCD beats last years

I don't think even $140M is reachable at this point. In the very optimistic scenario where the film reaches $75M domestic, its ~55/45 domestic/OS ratio would amount to $136M worldwide total.
Do you know if it’s releasing in China, Japan or Korea? I know it’s releasing in Australia next month but those are 4 really big markets missing in the international totals

Zazzer should have batgirled the entire slate.
Then what Reddit and all the DC fans be talking about it he did so? Probably should have released them all on Max

Why the holy hell would Affleck want to re-board this sinking ship?!?
I mean what else does he have going for him?
I’ll wait until Superman Legacy to see if the DC brand is truly dead for the foreseeable future. If Gunn can’t fix DC, no one can.

So what's everybody's Sunday plans for National Cinema Day? My viewing is going to be American Graffitti. First time I've seen it, and I'm quite curious to see what George Lucas created before he destroyed the world.
Blue Beetle and Barbie!
Was hard to find tickets at my local theaters so I had to go to the OC. Blue Beetle is selling quite well at my local AMC, Harkins, Regal and Cinemark!

It's somewhat interesting that Barbie will be WB's first ever 600 DOM grosser. Every other studio has at least one or two by this point. I suppose that speaks to WBs failure in managing their franchises throughout the 2010s and so far the 2020s.
They completely destroyed DC and made it a brand people actively avoid. They also allowed JK Rowling (though they likely had very little say there) to run Wizarding World into the ground. Maybe WB needs to go back to being the anti-Disney aka director driven with new ideas and adaptions instead of relying on old brands that need a good rest

Just beat Shazam 2 and all is good! Sure still a flop, but at least not DC’s biggest flop!
Also Madame Web and Kraven are so DOA next year. Can’t believe we’re getting 6 Marvel films in 2024 and a bunch of shows!! Disney/Sony needs to chill

I wrote Gunn's statement off as marketing for Blue Beetle. Never took it serously.
If that’s the case then the DCU is dead for me and I’ll be joining the Snyder fans in boycotting DC. Don’t open your mouth and promise fans things if you’re not going to go through with it…

It's inevitable. Between Gran Turismo being a nonstarter and Blue Beetle heading for another 70% collapse, the stage is perfectly set for Barbie to take back the top spot this weekend.
How is it headed for a 70% drop when it’s holding better than Shazam 2 and The Flash (school was out for this one, unlike for Blue Beetle). I think NCD will also help cushion the drop too. BOP has it as a 50% drop while Variety has it at a 60-68% drop.

Everyone is projecting different numbers. Variety is more pessimistic and has GT at 2 or 3, tied with Blue Beetle 2nd weekend. I’m thinking NCD is throwing everyone off?
Anyway, let’s go Blue Beetle!! Surpass WW84, Shazam 2, TSS and BOP then we’re good! Lol Give us a solid hold! -

You are absolutely correct on both points you make here. Bros was about gay men, starred openly gay men and was made by gay men for gay men. When you combine that with the highly polarizing (aka unlikeable to some/many) Eichner, the movie was always going struggle at the box office, no matter how funny it was - and I thought the movie was very funny.
Contrast that with the recent Amazon Prime movie Red, White and Royal Blue which was also about bi/gay men. However, it did not star openly gay men. The book upon which it was based was written by a straight woman (I believe) although I think the director is gay. Most importantly, the movie was made for straight women - the same audience who made the book a massive success and who are posting TikTok videos by the truckload where they are fangirling and swooning over the movie.
You don't need to be a studio executive to determine why Bros failed and RWRB is succeeding. How the representation is used is far more important than the representation itself. Blue Beetle is learning that painful lesson that representation will only take you so far.
RWRB > BROSThe former is a simple love story (with a good premise) while the latter is, well I don’t know what they were going for there but it sure wasn’t positive representation.
Anyways! Hoping Blue Beetle pulls through and avoids the title of lowest grossing DCEU film! Domestically at least, Shazam 2, TSS and WW84 are within sight. Worldwide will depend on China/Japan/Korea/Australia and holds in Mexico/Brazil. Fingers crossed!

OC as in Orange County? Or another OC? I don’t know what theater you’ve been checking but I looked at several in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas and there are plenty of BB and Barbie seats available on NCD. Where are you seeing these sell outs?
Near Orange County, I’m like in the outskirts of LA county. That awkward in the middle region between the two. My local AMC’s and Cinemark only had bad front seats left

Are you guys going to even bother doing sellout reports for National Cinema Day on 8/27?
I remember hearing even The Black Phone was selling out on NCD last year, even though it was for free on streaming on Peacock. People were going just to have something to do.
Seems like it would be easier to just say every showing on Sunday will sell out and move on.
National Cinema Day already effecting segueing for Blue Beetle and Barbie near me. So many sell outs! Had to go to the OC area to get my tickets for Sunday lolI’m curious how Sunday will effect the box office this weekend

Uh, it cost tens of millions of dollars just to get a movie into theaters. That is a major reason why some movies get sent straigh to Video or streaming; The studiios think it is going to be a sure fire bomb, and don't want to add to the red ink by throwing away money on a doomed film.
It would have lost way more on streaming! 90M (original price tag) is a lot for streaming movie

True but many families stayed home. My theatre is usually packed with kids and families, even when the big release is rated R, last Sunday however, only teens and young adults showed up.

I saw Blue Beetle and I absolutely loved it!! It’s such a shame the DC brand is toxic to casual audiences because if it weren’t then this film would be making bank!
Oh well, I’m going to cherish this one film I have about my favorite DC character because they actually did my boy justice! Hoping Gunn sticks to his word and we get more Jaime (and the Reyes family) in the DCU

The Warner Bros. Thread | Will NOT merge with Paramount...capitalism is still terrible
in Box Office Discussion

I do t think they’d have a reason to stop this merger. WB/Paramount would still have a ton of competition and their value is less than Disney and Universal nevermind Netflix or Amazon. If anything these two need the merger
