The timing is beyond odd. This type of thing usually gets many months put into it. But, if they had any inkling that Chapek would be leaving, they wouldn't have allowed the Rice departure most likely & may have not extended the contract. Add in the "Sunday before thanksgiving" stuff and its pretty crazy.

Really wondering if something happened with Chapek's life that made him say "enough".

My gut tells me that Disney higher execs and the boards made the decision a long time ago when Chapek claimed they "don't need China market", not to mention the media also reported that somehow Zaslav managed to meet Feige  in order to lure him to DC. I guess even Zaslav knew Chapek is no better than him and Disney has to face a lot of unnecessary drama thanks to Chapek's decisions

I think the final battle being relatively small was a good choice, but the specifics of it could've been done better, especially in terms of the tactics the Wakandans employed. I loved the duel between Namor and Shuri though, it felt very raw and the beach was also a neat setting to stage it in. One of the areas where I thought this film improved over the first, T'Challa's final duel against Killmonger was underwhelming.

Indeed, I love the rawness of the fights in this film, the   fight scene on the bridge is my favorite, I could easily feel the brutalness  of it when I first watched it at the theatre, I was afraid that Attuma would kill Okoye at any moment. The last time I saw this kind of fighting was probably ...Winter Soldier.
Arguably they can't have a big battle because there aren't many soldiers left, the other tribes didn't want to join, M'baku was forced to do it so he quickly gathered some, Nakia was just there to protect the last living member of her late husband's in-law family. And I don't think Shuri would expect the remaining soldiers and the midnight angels got beaten by Talokani that fast tho.

  3. To be fair, I think the most important thing that helped the Marvel franchise succeed is the very fact that they already lost their A-list properties (Spiderman, Xmen, Fantastic Four) to other studios, which is why they had to work from the ground and created the kind of characters that modern audience wanted to see and could easily connect with. I bet that Marvel would be drunk on their high horse and make the same mistakes as DC/WB if they had their "A-list champions" at first.

  4. Agree, I think Gunn's tweets about that subject are a very nice and polite way to say "move on", what true DC fans (not including that *guy* fans, I don't expect that from them) need is to appreciate and support the future of the franchise and the upcoming projects, not to mourn for the rest of their lives. That infamous twitter movement really set a bad example, it's like a bogeyman that haunted the DC franchise

  5. Disney will make a clear statement, and I doubt that those who said "Disney won't do it" would care or know that. Similar to how Simu tried to damage control on Weibo by declaring that he's Chinese nevertheless and will always remember and support his homeland yada yada, I doubt that even his loyal Westerner followers on Twitter knew he did it, otherwise they would unfollow him already. Both Jujutsu Kaisen and MoM are dead cases but hopefully, Thor 4 and other Marvel films won't get affected.

Disney should issue a statement about this. An apology is must needed for any future negotiation (atleast for the future of its Universe)

Please keep updating the real news from Weibo/China @Issac Newton @Bruce @Olive
I think they will make a statement too. If a gigantic brand such as Nike can do it then Marvel has no point in not doing it. Ego won't give people food and money after all.

  7. Lmao I hope Disney makes a statement about this, it's just a coincidence, they filmed that scene on the real street of New York, and there is just a lot of ... garbage on the street, you know, and it's not like all of them speak/understand Chinese, to begin with. They might think it was just random Chinese texts that were written by some random American Chinese. Disney gave zero F about the Tibets, why would they care about some random cult?

Hopefully it's just more PR talk from Raimi about toning down, we'll find out soon enough but the clips aren't making me overly optimistic.

It's a bait tweet, they butchered the video to fit their preference because they want to villainize Marvel/Feige's work style as usual. In the interview with fandango, Raimi said he wants to come back to work for Marvel again after this, If he isn't happy he wouldn't say that.

Its funny bc DC could take an advantage of  Marvel ban, but they have their own problems with actors, the brand is hurt (wonder woman being terrible received), and even the batman did ok (considering pandemic ofc)

Yeah, I've read similar things on Weibo, some even said the local bureau knew DC films won't make much anw even in the normal time so they just allow them to release there. And especially with the real Avatar coming, the cheap copy of Avatar's design concepts (aka. Aquaman) won't make much of a difference for DC overall. But tbh I think China and Marvel will eventually reconcile anw, similar to how China banned Avatar in its first run but they resolved their relationship later on.

According to that article, it's still got released in UAE the third-richest country in the world. Anw I think Disney will deal with it and release a cut version their for them. By cutting I mean they might erase the pin flag on Chavez's shirt or whatever.

Marvel got banned most likely cause of Liu/Zhao,they let other Disney stuff in( free guy, Encanto, jungle cruise) avatar got a re-release their just last summer so it will surely get one for the sequel.

It's such an irony that Marvel eff  themselves by hiring Liu/Zhao, it was supposed to be an act of attempting to pander to the mainland

Will Smith doesn't care about his wife. Who was he defending ?

The whole situtation is very disturbing. I guess comedians can't make memes or jokes about bald people because some of them might be losing their hair because of a disease. Is that the world people wnt to live?

If you don't like something or think it "crossed the line" ( whatever that means ), there are other means to do so other than hitting someone.

🥴Ironically, Smith's case reminds me of these two in Encanto,

I think some couples are just that weird, the husband put his wife's feelings above all else and he will react negatively after he sees his wife's reaction. I think Disney didn't over exaggerate about this.

No way in hell was the Flash speed force scene better than Portals or All three Spider-Man swinging together.

Ironically, I saw plenty of Snyder fans on twitter said Marvel fans would spam the hell out of it to let NWH win and #Oscarfansfavorite is Oscar's comforting letter to Disney, wonder what they're thinking now

  14. 3 hours ago, Mau said:

It would be so funny if China allows NWH as a symbolic way to make amends with Marvel, but also knowing that it would make 10M usd lmao

I think Disney will be happy with it as long as the relationship is improving and they reconcile with China moving forward, when comes to those franchises there is a lot of baggage with it, for example, fandom culture, merchandise, Disney park attractions, whatever it is that helps the brand awareness and benefits Marvel/Disney. There is a fun fact that even tho China pretty much limited the access of Hallyu to China's market, Korean idols' Chinese fan clubs are still holding the top 1 spot of donating for their favorite ones and buying the merch their idols are selling, Hollywood is not the only one that desires China market.

The next week/week and a half will be key for determining whether China manages to contain this wave or whether the country gets thoroughly overwhelmed. The political cost of omicron getting out and tearing through the Chinese population would be unfathomable and the loss of life would be staggering… China is densely populated and has a massive elderly population and a ton of smokers… basically, the perfect recipe for disaster with a respiratory illness. So far, they're heading back to the same well of tricks (Shanghai's in an unofficial partial lockdown; Changchun and Jilin in northern China are in full lockdown; megacity Shenzhen entered a week of full lockdown today; and that's just listing some of the more high-profile locations). With China's enthusiasm for mass testing and contact tracing and shutting things down to stop spread, think there's still at least some cause for hope. Really hoping that this gets contained quickly and with a minimum of fuss… looking forward to being able to return to a movie theater when this wave is over.

And, no, Covid-zero isn't sustainable forever; official rhetoric is slowly turning in a direction where the country might move away from the policy in the quasi-foreseeable future. Given China's unique vulnerabilities to Covid-19 (and the lack of immunity in the population), it'll take time. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Anyhow, speaking of box office… looks like the weekend box office is in the low 120 million RMB range (~$19 million USD); in other words, not good. March 2022 box office to date is just over 500 million RMB (under $80 million) across almost two weeks.

Well, at least we can use covid to save face for an underperforming box office run because it's an undeniable and acceptable reason, if Aquaman TLK fails we can simply blame covid too, (and also Amber Heard to some extent lmao)
