  1. Christopher Nolan draws inspiration from "JFK" and "Lawrence of Arabia" to tell a dense and essential story; which has never been so relevant.

Superb photograhy by Hoyte van Hoytema, masterful music by Ludwig Göransson. The alternation of black and white to adopt two points of view is remarkable.

Cillian Murphy is grandiose in this Promethean, fascinating role.

Political, committed cinema that questions our future since Year 1 of the atomic era.

    A hallucinatory, haunting ending.

A film that everyone should see.

To remember that people wanted a better world and to save humanity from having to live with dirty hands.

And to remember that cinema is an art.

  2.

All I can think of now is Oppenheimer, arguably my favorite Nolan to date, right in my pantheon of films that show creation as an act of war. It's a strangely linear but ultra-mastered biopic, in addition to being a thriller.

Second tweet It's also his most dedicated film for actors with a pretty incredible cast. And which reminds us how much Robert Downey Jr knows how to play. It's amazing there.

Anyhew, I wonder it Eternals have any this kind of character developments or are they pretty much the same person throughout all ages? (you don't need to go all Logan but something...)

There is no character development. There are far too many of them. The nice character stays nice, the ambiguous one stays ambiguous, the maternal character stays maternal, the warm character stays warm. They are archetypal. All the characters are one-dimensional.

    Spoiler

    Phastos

is perhaps the only character to evolve but we don't see him evolve. We are told that. Moreover, we hardly see him during the first two hours.

  5. Sorry for my poor English.

I saw the film tonight in France. My background: my favorite MCU movies : Endgame, Iron Man, WS, GOTGvol1 and Shang-Chi.

I don't think the movie is mediocre. But rather uninteresting. I didn't manage to get attached to a single character. None of them carry the weight of thousands, millions of years. Especially Kumail Nanjiani. The most useless and poorly written character in the MCU.
Gemma Chan is certainly a good actress, but I find her lost in this film, she has no charisma.
The only characters that interested me a little are Makkari and Phastos.
The rhythm is indigestible. Some Eternals are introduced after 90 minutes. We see them at the beginning and then nothing for 90 minutes.
The romances suck.There is no chemistry between Sersi and Ikaris.
The sex scene we were sold is ridiculously soft. Lion King sex scene is more sexual. The upside down kiss in Spider-Man 1 is WAY more sexual.
I'm not talking about the inconsistencies on the power scales. We are told: x character is very strong! He or she could beat all the Eternals! But at the end, no. Absolutely not. Even Shang-Chi seems stronger.

There are some very serious things going on during the movie but that doesn't seem to affect the characters. Nothing seems serious when we hear about the end of the world. I don't believe in any stakesI don't understand why John Campea says the film is dense. Dune, Interstellar, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy or Cloud Atlas are dense.

Also I think most of the reviews (almost all) so far have been American critics. Let's see how INT critics respond because MCU get good reviews in Asia, otherwise from western critics it is doomed to be rotten.

    I repost.

    French first reactions

    - it's the MCU movie that comes out of its comfort zone with risk-taking! The most DC of Marvel (in the visual & epic combat). On the other hand, the lengths in the 1st part is a shame. Note: 7.5 / 10

    - #ChloeZhao gives the #MCU an epic fresco, well balanced between blockbuster and arthouse film.
It brings a real revival for #Marvel. Purists will surely be thrown off, but #TheEternals will also open a door to a new audience.

    - TheEternals is an appetizer with potential. Action, laughs and a great cast. A scenario rather researched and a very good music.

    - Even if it was a bit long, it was necessary to install these new characters and their unknown universe. Very different from the MCU mold, #TheEternals aims at drama and emotion in a super beautiful and elegant movie. I can't wait to see the sequel, especially after 2 exciting post-gen scenes!

    - Not convinced by #TheEternals. The film constantly navigates between classic blockbuster and unassuming auteur film. 2h37 that do not allow to have the slightest epic breath or strong emotion. We don't get attached to much. Very different from the rest of the MCU. It will divide.

    - Chloe Zhao's film contrasts with previous Marvel films, for better or worse. In trying to embrace the Marvel cosmogony, it often gets lost in it, but without falling apart. Many will be disappointed, but that's also how you recognize a risk-taking.

The Eternals... drags on (far, far too long) on a story that is both complex and empty. Some characters are endearing but half of the cast is almost invisible. The only good point is that the photography is beautiful. Ten thousand places from the MCU

The stakes are global and yet the film seems very small, with an absent world and action confined to desert regions. We don't feel the emotion that Zhao wants to infuse. Despite the messy jokes, it's the least Marvel of Marvels. No origin story, no interconnected plot, No ugly CGI and Not visually ugly.
