Personal ranking of the nominees I've seen so far:

    1. Oppenheimer

    2. Poor Things

    3. The Holdovers

    4. Barbie

    5. Killers of the Flower Moon

    6. Maestro

This really wasn't a great year for movies overall IMO. Too many high-profile disappointments.

Anatomy of a Fall is better than both Barbie & Maestro.

...No that's not how it works. Theaters get more of the profits as it goes on. Studios get most of their profits from opening weekend. Theaters like leggy films because they get more profit from them. And 300 million wouldn't be 3x its production+marketing budget, it'd be 2x. Marketing being excluded from film budgets is Hollywood financing trickery, there's a reason why the rule of thumb is to triple the production budget because that's how you account for the subtracted marketing budget.

The plain and simple conclusion is that Aquaman 2 is a flop while Aquaman 1 was a blockbuster. And it is astonishing to think that in 2022 Aquaman 2 was scheduled to release on the same day of Avatar 2 !! What a disastrous situation it would be for Warner Brothers !!

Not much different I guess from Stallone and Schwarzenegger being leading men/draws for a while. Although neither of them are anywhere close to as attractive as Evans and Cavill.

Schwarzenegger had tons of charisma which Evans clearly doesn't have. Schwarzenegger name was enough  for people to go to see the movie.

I genuinely think one of the smartest (or perhaps luckiest) decisions made for Anyone But You was casting Powell and Sweeney. They're both up-and-comers who have bona fide hits under their belt that make them recognizable (Euphoria for Sweeney, which is very big among the online Gen Z/Millenial crowd; and Maverick for Powell which was strong for older white women) but they aren't A-listers to the point where it's just "Clooney and Roberts in another movie together". They are small enough to disappear into their roles, and big enough to be recognizable.

It also helps that they're both strong actors who have genuine chemistry with one another. One thing I've been noticing lately is that the "movie star" isn't as dead as we thought it was 2015-2019. Sure, you don't get surefire 200M grossers just by casting an A-lister anymore, but if you get the right actor in the right role, they are massive massive draws. The "franchise" trend of the 2010s (which is still strong mind you) is somewhat becoming eclipsed by a "star + concept" model which honestly excites me.

If ABY can make it to 80M total (or screw it, 100M seems possible) I think it's a huge win for the industry, a huge win for rom-coms, a huge win for movie stars, and a huge win for theaters.

Sydney Sweeney was great in the movie Reality.

Anyway, it’s honestly not looking horrible for Aquaman WW. I expected worse after the latest CBM bombing.

It's like how every horrible Salman Khan movie in India earn some money at the box office due to being a holiday release.

avatar 2 had a higher PTA than maverick last weekend ($1,763 vs $1,594), but it had a 3rd of the theaters

That only proves Avatar 2 is more leggier than TGM and is more beloved by the audience.

By the way, if these CBM flops do force studios to get a little more creative and we see more straight action movies like Top Gun: Maverick then I am all for it..

Most comic book movies are using a very tired formula.  I only get interested now if it's a comic book movie that is aspiring to be another genre (see: The Batman )

Calling Top Gun Maverick an action movie is like calling Naked Gun movie a drama about police squad.
