In South Korea, Alita is holding up pretty well considering that it's sandwiched between 4 movies that just opened a few days ago, and is leading 3 of those. RPO ended up grossing ~17m in SK.

From what I've read it appears that the actors will actually be submerged underwater for Avatar 2, because they had to train to hold their breath for long periods. Also the biggest hurdle has been getting the motion tracking cameras to read the dots on the actors since water reflects light in weird ways that makes it difficult for the cameras to pick up the markers.
I'm almost positive Alita was not filmed this way for just one underwater scene. It was likely done in their regular volume capture room, and someone tied a restraint around Rosa Salazar's waist to simulate underwater movement. -

It's when we're reminded - forcibly - that Alita is a teenage girl with the hokey, stand-in Hugo that it slows down
It's a shame because the romance arc could have worked if they cast a different actor and maybe rewrote some lines of dialogue. They nailed the casting of pretty much every other character, but missed the mark on Hugo. Even the very minor characters like Nyssiana (played by the wonderful Eiza Gonzales) are such gems.

Even without the backstory I preferred him to the OVA/manga Hugo. I think he gave a more honest portrayal of a kid just trying to hustle in a dog eat dog city.

Even without autostereoscopy Avatar 2 is going to be an improvement because of Dolby's new projectors with brighter lumen output. My biggest pet peeve with 3D is that the image is too dark, and now (depending on which theater you go to) that's not going to be an issue anymore.
