This weekend sold R$18.8M and 861.5k admissions.

After the massive wednesday this whole weekend and specially Garfield should fall as a huge disapointment, however hear me out, there were huge events this weekend on Brazil that massively damaged the box office. First, the south of the country have been hit by record breaking floods that is currently causing destruction and deaths, second, the Madonna show that attracted a couple of millions of peoples besides the record breaking audience on television. And third, a national test was supposed to take place on sunday but got delayed due to the floods, but still messed the routine on several capitals and small cities. All of that contributed to a negative box office, what is a shame because Garfield was clearly on the route of a record opening.

Next weekend is the release of Planet of the Apes and hopefully some legs to compensate this weekend.

  2. Disney have shared with distributors that their goal is to sell 3M tickets with Planet of the Apes, what would be around R$60M on the box office, if it hits that goal it could become the highest grossing from the franchise in box office and 2nd in admissions. For comparison, here is how the last trilogy performed:

    -Rise: R$23.6M/  2.48M admissions

    -Dawn: R$55.4M/  4.1M admissions

    -War: R$42.9M/  2.7M admissions

  3. April sold as a whole R$115.8M on the box office and 5.7M tickets, it was the lowest grossing month so far and down 45.8% from april last year, when Mario released. During the whole 30 days Godzilla x Kong was the only movie to sell 1 million admissions on the period. Up until that point 2024 was tracking higher than 2023, but april pulled it down and now it's -9% compared to the same point last year.

  4. Garfield absolutely destroyed expectations, dragged them across the street and shot'em. On the opening day it made R$4.3M and 200k admissions, higher than Mario's first day and almost 4x of Across the Spiderverse's first day. The previous highest opening day for an animation this year was KFP4 with R$1.2M, to give it context.

Meanwhile, Fall Guy opened with also healthy R$1M/45k admissions and Ferias Trocadas with R$310k/15k admissions.

  5. GARFIELD, NATAL T-1

    T-1 Cinemark: 8 showings, 2320  seats, 87 sold (3.75%)

    T-1 Cinepolis: 8 showings, 1280 seats, 74 sold (5.78%)

    T-1 Moviecom: 4 showings, 580 seats, 25 sold (4.31%)

    T-1 Cineflix: 8 showings, 1520 seat, 37 sold (2.43%)

    T-1 Total: 28 showings, 5700 seats, 223 sold (3.91%)

    COMPS:

    GxK (101%): R$2.53M

    Spiderverse (67%): R$1.18M

    Little Mermaid (106.7%): R$3.3M

So yeah, Garfield is going to be big in Brazil. Dare I say, chances are the best animated opening since Mario. The movie is rating with an absurd 98% brand awareness according to Sony, expect good things for the fact cat over here.

Also, Fall Guy sold 1/3 of Civil War from the first day, but it had previews today before the release so that damages the comps.

With R$15.6M on the box office and 699.3k admissions, this weekend was the worst weekend of the year so far, down 20% from last weekend.

All of the new releases failed the landing, despite good pre-sales Challengers barely reached 5th place followed by Spy x Family, despite being the release with the most screens Winnie-the-Pooh is all down in 8th (At least the opening was indeed better than the first one), while Boy Kills World and Aumenta que é Rock'n'Roll did not even charted.

The real victory was the top 4, with Civil War having an outstanding second week hold and GxK and KFP4 reaching the R$40M mark. These last two are now the 2nd and 3rd best selling movie of ths year.

Next weekend could change things as I already mentioned a expanded holiday starts on wednesday, with the releases of Fall Guy and the UEFA Champions League Semifinal on tuesday, on wednesday Garfield, Love Lies Bleeding, Ferias Trocadas, The Chosen, Guadalupe and Club Zero. On saturday, Star Wars Episode I's back into theaters.

  7. Following the big hit that was the last Chosen, that sold more than 700k tickets, now the whole rest of the season will be released in theaters in Brazil for the whole may, two episodes for every two weeks.

  8. Mid-Week (22-24 april) box office:

    1) Civil War: R$2.8M/   140k admissions

    2) GxK: R$1.1M/  70k admissions

    3) Kung Fu Panda 4: R$1.1M/  80k admissions

    4) Ghostbusters: ???

    5) Evidências do Amor: R$475k/   25k admissions

Despite the low weekend, the mid-week was pretty great for the box office.

    THIS WEEKEND's SCREEN COUNT:

-Pooh Blood and Honey 2: 521 screens

    -Challengers: ???

    -Spy x Family: 400 screens

    -Aumenta que é Rock'n'Roll: 355 screens

    -Boy Kills World: 329 screens

    -Simple Comme Sylvain: 37 screens

    -La Chimera: 29 screens

I cannot say much for the other releases, but from the sales it really does look like Challengers will be off to a good one in Brazil.

Meanwhile, Planet of the Apes have passed the pre-sales from GxK with 15 days to go. Bad comp, true, because GxK really did bad on pre-sales until it was out and had a surge, but it is safe to say Planet of the Apes is off to a breakout in Brazil.

R$19.7M was made on the box office during this period, and 878.3k admissions.

Civil War opened at 1st place, breaking the best opening ever for an A24 movie, and the first from them to open at 1st place. Despite that and the good legs for the top 5, the other two openings though bombed, and that made this weekend to be one of the worst weekends of the year.

Lots of releases next weekend, with Challengers, Spy x Family: Code White, Boy Kills World, Winnie-The-Pooh Blood and Honey 2, Aumenta que é Rock'n'Roll, La Chimera and Club Zero.

  13. Civil War opened at 1st place on thursday, with R$824.5k and 38.4k admissions. It was the best opening day for A24. Opening weekend should be on the range of R$6.5M-9M, the lower range if it performs like Napoleon. GxK is down to second with R$287.9k and 16.1k admissions.

That said however, it didn't stop this thursday to be the second worst thursday in grossing of the year, behind march 14th.

(Will update the admissions totals later today)

R$22.6M were sold on the box office and 1M tickets, down 10% from last weekend.

Ghostbusters had a good multiplier on the weekend and ended on the higher end after the thursday number. The opening was R$700k above the previous movie, but still far from good as it was still half from what the 2016 version opened. GxK and KFP4 keep steady with great legs and First Omen is the best selling horror this year (so far, a bad year for the genre).

Next weekend releases Civil War, Jorge da Capadocia, Abigail, The Green Border and Vidente por Acidente. It will be fun to follow how the first two will perform.
