  1. I will contend with the argument that: GvK would've also done better if not for day and date. Also GvK is so mega-specific because of how much better those two characters suit watching them in a gigantic screen in a way other movies and characters don't. I didn't go watch GvK but if I had I'd have done so in the theater because scale is a big part of the experience, meanwhile Black Widow I could care less and would've watched online.
  2. I do wonder what the ceiling for Dune 2 will be since at least from what I gather, in latin america the first film didn't really impress that many people and I can't imagine it'll do particularly well in Asia. Something like 200 domestic and 400 international sounds reasonable to me.
  3. It won't have any. If Top Gun didn't have any effect on the box office for Mission Impossible, Barbie won't have any effect on the box office for Ocean's.
  4. It is a movie based on a toy intended for 3-9 year olds. It is the definition of a movie that'd attract families/kids. And even from the early demo breakdowns you can see kids are really liking it.
  5. Oppenheimer cost 180 million. Also I do think people are highly overstimating how much of a risk Barbie actually was. It's one of the most popular IPs in the world and the film purposefully tried to recreate the look of that IP was faithfully as possible, it was never actually risky. There are lessons to be learned from both Mario Bros and Barbie ending up as the highest grossing films of the year... they just aren't the lessons Film Twitter will like.
  6. I mean yeah but my argument is that now they'll have to do it even more. That coupled with CBMs only doing great numbers if they are great makes me think that hiring great filmmakers will/should become a bigger priority for Marvel and DC alike. As for the IP question... idk, Mickey Mouse?
  7. It's not about knowing who the director is, is about the quality that results from a good director which will probably translate into legs. Granted, Super Mario Bros may eliminate this argument.
  8. It'll be kinda interesting to see which sort of lessons studios learn from Barbie's success. On the other hand, "attach great filmmakers to recognizable IPs" seems like the biggest no-brainer but like... what exactly does that translate to? What can you do to try to chase after that success. Joseph Kosinki's Hot Wheels? Jordan Peele Barney? Luca Guadanigno's Winnie the Pooh? I'm trying to brainstorm what'd be the result from this because in truth Barbie is such a specific IP in terms of the mass global and inter-generational appeal it has which accounts for about 90% of the film's success if the success of Super Mario is also anything to go about. I guess attaching great filmmakers to the franchises that they've already got going on like CBMs could be one of them too. Maybe a signal that those studios should be aiming higher with those franchises.
  9. I'd be very weary of using any immediate short-term stock market info as fodder against the studios since that can usually backfire really fast. It won't be until next quarter that the effects of the strike are somewhat felt.
