serious business is about to start
This movie is likely going to end up as the biggest movie of the year in China in 2023 due to everything going on in the world lately. -

Maoyan predict Sazume over 800m,insane
Post Truth numbers have been underwhelming. I was hoping it would at least beat Suzume but it seems that is not to be. They should have just went with the original 31 Dec release date and leave things to chance. -
Changed my mind again, Post Truth should comfortably beat out Suzume for the king of March crown. Suzume ran out of steam way too quick. Hopefully, Post Truth can make it to $100 million.
-
Suzume should take the number 1 spot in March…comfortably. I was way wrong to put Post Truth above the Japanese anime. Anyway i hope this encourages Chinese studios to bring out local anime to compete with ones from Japan.

How wide is the Titanic re-release? It will be interesting to see if it makes more than the Avatar re-release in China.
doubt it will even make anything above a million dollars. -

it’ll be interesting to see how “Born to Fly” fares in theatres. Given everything that’s going on today, it’s probably going to end up as the highest grossing movie of the year in China. -

im a bit curious to see how Super Mario will do since mainland China never went through the whole video game console craze due to the government’s console ban in 2000. Nintendo Switch only started selling in 2019 through Tencent so not holding much hope for nostalgia. PC games pretty much have the market all to themselves.

hot take from makoto shinkai
It’s going to take some time for China to overtake Japan on the international market. China is too reliant on Sun Wukong, Nezha, White/Green Snake etc. There isn’t that much diversity outside of these mythical characters as compared with Japanese anime movies. I also feel Japanese anime will continue to have an advantage over their Chinese counterparts as they aren’t afraid to incorporate a bit of Western influence into their films.

Post Truth is a comedy on the level of Five Hundred Miles, that film got less than 400 mils on the best release time of the year. Just because it's comedy doesn't mean it's well liked and will be watched by masses. The cast has a lot of comedians that have bad reputation unlike the likes of Shen Teng, Huang Bo or Wang Bao Qiang, it got moved multiple times too. During its early screening in December, it got bad reception.
Five Hundred Miles may have fared better if they didn’t insist on releasing on CNY. Way too much competition. If Post Truth only manages to make $60 million, especially given how everything is back to normal in China, then that would truly be a failure.
Anyway, we should know soon who the winner for month of March is soon enough.

Post Truth will either bomb or mediocre. The one came out on top would either be the Japanese anime or Revival.
Suzume? Though it will likely receive a positive reception from the Chinese audience, I personally don’t see this anime beating out Post Truth. Im predicting Post Truth will make at least 4X the total China box office revenue of Suzume.
Despite the fact Revival tv drama being widely popular in mainland China, i still think Post Truth will come out on top when the two go head to head next month. The former is primarily targeted towards a more mature and serious audience whilst the latter is a light hearted comedy intended for the whole family.

Of all the movies releasing in China this March, both foreign and domestic, “Post Truth” looks set to come out on top. I dunno how both Mario and Shazam will do but im not expecting much from either of them.

Not to mention that the MCU is pure American culture.
Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on were you stand), Marvel is going to end up as an unintended casualty of the escalating geopolitical tensions between the US and China. As things worsen between the two powers, nationalism on both sides is only going to go from strength to strength. “Made in China” products were once frowned upon in China but now are seen as something like a badge of honor especially amongst the younger generation. China box office is slowly reflecting that.

Why not ? There will definitely be a time when there won't be much left in Chinese cinemas and offering a great film like JC's Titanic may be a solution for 2 or 3 weeks in order to fill the voids and fill the theaters while waiting for new movies
that’s the thing, there won’t be any huge voids to exploit for the next year or two. A ton of domestic movies were delayed due to Covid and many are now scrambling to get slots. The director of TWE2 even touched upon that in a recent interview and this was one of the reasons they decided to go with the CNY date despite Covid concerns. -

I didn't even know there was a re-release in December but in fact it was released at the same time as A2, it's not really a re-release as NCsoft said. The real re-release was in 2021 and if Disney really wants to re-release it can do it later and give a lot of screens like they did with Avatar, 2 years ago. And the Chinese love JC and his films so there is no doubt that he would have made millions or even tens of millions of dollars.
China is not giving Titanic a wide re-release within the next two years. Do you know how huge the backlog for movies awaiting release in China? It doesn’t matter how popular James Cameron is in China, his films are not getting any special treatment.

I don't think you have the concept of what a "flop" is. Something cannot disappoint if it's not given the screens to do business to begin with. Go on though, you seem quite pleased with your narrative over there.
1 hour ago, NCsoft said:I would hardly call that a "re-release", it released in some theatres in anticipation and also alongside the sequel.
im not here to argue whether the Avatar 2022 China limited re-release was a flop or not. The point i was trying to make is that a Titanic re-release would have suffered a similar fate to Avatar 2022 re-release.
No point in Disney seeking approval for a 25 year old film that ain’t going to make any money for them due to China’s reluctance to give them meaningful showings.

Marvel just restart in China.
The “Guochao” movement in China is slowly suffocating what’s left of Hollywood and in time foreign movies will have a minimal presence in the mainland. So, even if Disney were to turn back there would be nothing to back to. It’s time to accept that Hollywood’s time in China is done.- 1

Just how many time you need to be reminded December 2022 was the peak of Covid and nothing else matters that time?
Uhmm Avatar re-release flopping in Dec 2022 had nothing to do with Covid. It was primarily due to a lack of showings. -

Avatar re-release was in 2021 and made $57M
Avatar did another re-release in December 2022 and that was an absolute disappointment. It didn’t even go above $500,000.
If you think China is going to roll out the red carpet for a Titanic re-release as they did for Avatar back in 2021 you are sadly mistaken. The re-release in 2021 was exceptional since China literally had nothing else to show in theatres due to zero Covid delays.

I think Titanic would have made some millions in China especially during this period (Valentine's Day). Don't forget that the 2012 release made $145M, so I think Chinese people love Titanic
Both Avatar and The Wandering Earth re-released a few months back and neither one managed to go above $1 million. Do you know the reason why? Lack of showings.
A Titanic re-release would have faced the same fate regardless of how much it made over 10 years ago.

not just marvel & korean entertainment comeback, restrictions will also loosen for china boys love and horror genre
I can understand horror films and tv shows being let back in but “boys love”? I don’t see that happening anytime soon especially with the falling birth rates in China. Anyway, Boys love genre is not really my cup of tea but i did like “Heavens Official Blessings” and “Mo Dao Zu Shi” donghuas. -

How much A2 can add after this weekend (with the expansion) ? And what is Maoyan forecast ?
I saw on twitter that maybe Titanic could be re-released in China but later, do you think it's possible ?
There is a huge backlog of domestic movies waiting for release in China so the chances of a Titanic re-release getting an adequate number of showings is slim to none. Besides, Hollywood has a limited quota in China, why would Disney waste it on a re-release which won’t even generate anything above a million dollars for them in China. -

guardians 2 did 100m$ even during then ! so if it released can be 50-60 with max ratings !
and i think that's common for most movies apart from stuff like avatar , fast and furious and those big ones ! excited to see what happens to flash and aquaman 2!
btw is there any local competition for shazam ? John wick releases a week later !
Competition or not Shazam 2 is dead on arrival and John Wick ain’t releasing in mainland China.
