Did anyone go see In a Violent Nature? If so, without spoiling anything, what’s up with the RT scores? It has 87% from critics yet only 47% from audiences. This massive split with critics giving the higher score is incredibly rare given the genre. I’m generally not a horror fan as most of the genre nowadays is absolute garbage; however this one has me intrigued.

Just got out of the movie. It’s a slow burn movie with brief spurts of sudden gore. It’s not for everyone. Probably why people aren’t feeling it.

FWIW, I saw one here in Sacto just before the recall and it is just as neck-snappingly fugly in real life as it is on screen or in print.  Always thought this whenever I've saw pictures of it, but it really does look like something from a very bad SciFi dystopian movie made in the 80s, especially as one is driving by it.

I was thinking more 90s-early 2000s video game, especially with that rigid design.

The heavy hitters (those three, A Quiet Place, Despicable Me, Twisters) all appear more appealing on paper than any of the May titles with the exception of Apes did, $150M+ should be easily achievable for all of them with the possible exception of A Quiet Place (being another prequel with a new cast and all, though cheap enough that they're sure to see a profit). It's whether any of the movies like Horizon or Fly Me to the Moon will connect. At the moment, looking at what those have working against them, I'm going with "no" on that one.

I’ve started to sour on Horizon more after the bad reviews it’s gotten, but then again that might not deter people. The bigger concern is how part one is allegedly just set up. Quiet Place also gives off odd vibes in terms of performance, idk.

Fly Me To The Moon I go back and forth on. It looks charming enough to be counterprogramming but the plot might be too odd for some folks.

  4. Here’s my ultimate theater future take: there needs to be serious change on both the studio and exhibition side.

Theaters have to start bringing prices for tickets and snacks down, and they have to provide a better experience. Whether that’s actually enforcing no phone rules or more IMAX screens (I remember the folks there mentioned that they literally sold out of tickets for Dune). It has to be an experience again.

But at the same time, that will also require work on the studio side. Studios need to give the theater a better share of the box office (which would require them to also take control of budgets), embrace new marketing avenues like TikTok like I mentioned before, that kind of stuff. They already screwed themselves by going all in on streaming, so they have to work with theaters to bring them back.

I don't really want to get into melodramatics regarding the schedule but it does seem like it would be more ideal for Universal if Twisters and Despicable Me switched release dates. They seem to be leaning into the whole red-blooded 'murican angle with Twisters anyway so it makes more sense as a July 4th release. I dunno if they were afraid of a possible Horizon breakout or something but that doesn't seem like that's gonna be too big a concern now.

Don’t the Despicable Me/Minions movies usually open around the beginning of July? Might be that Uni doesn’t want to rock the boat on what’s already working for them in regards to that franchise.

Got to say with Furiosa and Garfield looking to underperform, and most of May’s slate: if Bad Boys and IO2 get the right reception - I honestly wouldn’t be surprised at a breakout for either. I mean something has to fill in seats, right?

Both films are currently looking good by pre sales so far. At the very least they should have good openings, and will hopefully have the receptions to carry on into the summer.

One thing that keeps me a little hopeful for this is that Dune had a trash last week of pre sales and still pulled through. Even then, there’s gonna be audience differences and I don’t expect as good walk ups.
