Anot6her Medicore at best Illumination movie that will make a lot of money at the box office.
I think it will make a lot of money, but won't jump start the Video Game genre. You need to do more then make money for that to happen. You have to reach beyond the core audience...and from the reviews this won't do that.
The video game curse have always been about low box office tho first and foremost (that’s why there haven’t been many adaptations because it’s just not commercially viable on top of bad reviews). The movies are not well received critically AND commercially unsuccessful.
Although you could say the genre has already started as RT scores have improved but box office still couldn’t clear 500M WW until…now. The sonic movies were successful but still not a big blockbuster.

Lower than Sonic movies. I would’ve never guessed lol.

How in the world is the CG bad, what? Just from the trailers, it’s the best thing illumination has ever animated. One of their best looking movies if not the absolute best. I see plenty of squash and stretch which are sorely missing from Pixar and Disney 3D films.
Also calling it “CG” is weird as hell. It’s an animated movie.

Christ Pratt is kind of everywhere right now promoting not one but TWO movies, so I’m genuinely surprised by GOTG3's "slow" start.

Did reviews cripple Minions 2?

I mean big box office is mass appeal. Some of the posts in here 😹. If a movie makes tons of money, it has mass appeal period (aka “appeal to more than just hardcore fans and children under 10”). And they ARE making a movie with mass appeal. This is THAT movie.
This is not Dungeons & Dragons, for example. Doesn’t matter how much critics shill the movie. It’s still going to tank. That movie is more similar to Detective Pikachu/Sonic movies. An adaption of an IP. Something cute for the fans.
The Mario Movie from the get-go is far wider reaching. As long as it’s not absolutely awful (and it doesn’t look like it is), it should do very well.-

I don’t think it has anything to do with review scores tbh.

cause its sonic on steroids in terms of popularity with plenty of adults who play/played the game growing up and you'd expect a fan rush from them
I’ve never seen or heard or read about an adult hardcore Mario fan in my life lol (I’m sure there are but it’s not prevalent). There are definitely hardcore Nintendo fans tho but that doesn’t mean they stan Mario lol. It’s that not type of franchise. It’s super causal. It’s very popular and everyone knows who Mario is, but it is not a thirst fan fare type of series. Never have been and never will be because Nintendo is not interested in that for Mario. It’s always been a broad appeal causal IP. They have Zelda which is more acclaimed and far more focused. Zelda as a franchise has a way more hardcore fandom than Mario in part due to that. There’s no weird off beat party filler Zelda games or sports games. A Zelda movie would definitely have a huge fan rush.
Btw, Sonic has always been marketed as the edgier more cool/adult mascot.
