I don't think the BO is bad because theaters are a luxury. Last summer was a hit with Barbenheimer. Nothing big financially happened in a year. It's just the lack of attractive product imo because of the strike
Its not even the strike. The big ticket films were delayed from 2025 really. This year was always bare.

People aren't deciding to 'Go the movies' these days and choosing what is on offer. They are going to see something. Event films or something to keep the kids busy.

I mean I only give a shit about Dune because Timothee is in it. Starpower counts at least for me
I agree that people aren't going to big budget films for stars but I do think the right actor with the right IP is a magic combo

How do we know Paul is a false prophet and not the Messiah the Fremen were waiting?
Paul and Jessica drank the water of life and didn't die so that adds to the credibility of Paul being the Messiah.
The Bene Gesserit have the ability to transmute poison. Presumably, all Reverand Mothers on Arakkis drink it and hope they don't die.

Persnally think chani will return , yeah she is reluctant but I think she will understand and return . But think some tweaks will be made . She definitely won't be 100% team Paul. Can see a scenario where she is in that role of trying to advice Paul and trying to tame his demons or something and probably trying to protect Paul and unfoil whatever machinations irulan will be upto.
Had no problem with her in the film until the ending which felt tucked on .
Adaptation chani has way more urgency .her just becoming team Paul at the end would have been jarring and just contradicted her character.
I think Denis really has to get across Irulan's story in the next one. Paul is the villain. Not Irulan.
She endures humiliation and ostracisation for twelve years. Paul is actively trying to usurp her bloodline by getting his mistress pregnant and putting his bastards on the throne. He doesn't even try to befriend Irulan or make anything better for her. She is a Corrino so she is the enemy and that is all she is. Its incredibly politically stupid that he does what he does because Irulan has sisters who have claims to his throne. Irulan is one of Paul's greatest failures, so much so, his daughter will be the one that has to unite Atreides and Corrino by blood. Its important because their descendant will be Siona Atreides, saviour of humanity. Paul is just selfish like Jessica. He puts his feelings before anything else
I like the hint in this film that they are going to change Irulan into being a co-ruler with Paul. It never made sense she continued to be Princess rather than Empress.

If Chani doesn't return to Paul in Messiah, it drastically changes not only that book but the rest of the franchise, which Legendary may still want to do without Denis.
All Chani does in Messiah is
struggle to get pregnant. Gets pregnant and dies.

Chani in the book isn't that interesting though. They've drastically changed her and her relationship to Paul from ride or die concubine to angry, betrayed Freedom Fighter. Chani doesn't challenge Paul that much. Her story in Messiah is passive.

It will be one. Its kind of funny with the recent comments but Messiah is all about plotting rather than big battles. Its wordy.
Sci Fi channel merged Messiah with Children of Dune so that sort of tells you what you miss if you take a knife to it. I think they'll actually add more to it. For Irulan in particular considering how her character is set up here.

Lets hope the Bob Marley film doesn't have a Color Purple run.

So WB having the 3 of the 4 biggest global moneymakers of the last 5 months of 2023 and a potential really good 24 on paper at least. Do not think Zazlav is going anywhere unless he sells.
Not to mention the solid press they've had for the casting of the Superman film. Completely non-controversial. Actors look like their characters. Could it might just work?

Its Apples's own fault. Who looks at Argylle and goes, yeah that'll make half a billion.

Yep, considering the plethora of factors the movie had going against it, it's pretty solid. It's still a flop ofc, but I'd assume WB sees it as a slight win
Its a huge win. At the start of December people were thinking this would do Flash numbers

Yeah got to concede that Aquaman number is not too shabby all things considered. At least WW. Just think if it had not been a Dead Man Walking of a movie franchise ender it might have done.
You'd have to think that had it not been a narrative dead end the US total would have been more on a par with the international. But then, why was the Domestic audience so turned off by that when the international audience was not?
Considering this was sent to recoup as much cash as it reasonably could for as little outlay as possible its done staggeringly well. And with that in mind I would think there is a whole domestic audience waiting for VOD. This will break even for WB which is a big win considering their situation.

There was so much lost potential in this film. Even overseas. I saw it with a practically empty cinema first weekend in the UK. That split is money left on the table.

"Mainly" being the key word here, they still had a roughly 60/40 breakdown that was reflected on BOSS's opening weekend but as the weeks went on the demo skewed more and more female so going forward we can expect the next installment (should they make another one, which seems very likely) to be more 70/30. That is worrisome imho.
Because a lot of the repeat business was for Mr Tom Blyth. (who I hope has gotten some attention on the back of this)
Its strange because the OG Hunger Games has a female protagonist. Something these days that would probably draw ire from Twitter folk. Other than the very first trailer the promo made it clear the main character was a guy. If you can't get the boys in for a story that is mostly about a teenage boy, what can you do?

The discourse about “hiding it’s a musical” makes me think about the THG: BOSS. Although I wouldn’t go as far as calling it a musical, Rachel Ziegler’s character sang like 8 songs. A lot of non book readers didn’t know there would be singing and I did see some tiktoks that thought the singingwas cringe. But overall people still seemed to like the movie and it had good legs.
This movie has a similar target audience, so i guess I just don’t get why not knowing a movie is a musical would make people mad or affect audience reaction and WOM.
Its the type of musical it is. Lucy Gray doesn't 'randomly' burst into song for no reason. She sings at understandable times. There is less music in that film than there should be. Snow should have sang Gem of Panem. One of the things of the book is that they are BOTH Songbirds but he can only sing the Capitol's tune on command like the Jabberjays in the cage Gaul has.
Wonka passes because its meant to be eccentric. Mean Girls doesn't because we've seen Mean Girls before and it doesn't need 'here are my feelings' songs.

Devaluing Looney Tunes out of Public Domain fears does nothing for WB. It just means they can't make money out of the properties just like everyone else can't

The marketing looks cheap which makes the movie look cheap. Like a CW show on film

WB is in a turnaround process. They streamline it , cut the losses, get some of their successful IP working and then sell it on for profit.
-
Hard to know how this will do. It's well publicised. They want us to think Dune 2 is an event but Dune 1 got lost in Covid. It's like the industry is willing this film to success. Maybe Chalamet really is the IT boy though. He carried Wonka.

The young actor group from the turn of the millennium is just notoriously bad, and the ones who didn't go the superhero route but still have major careers are few and far between. Yes, we still have Jake Gyllenhaal acting in major stuff, but the best actor of the ground passed away in 2008 (Heath Ledger), Joaquin Phoenix went off the deep end for a while but has somewhat leveled ooutthe other big talent Josh Hartnett abandoned mainstream Hollywood. Paul Walker also passed away unfortunately. The Ashton Kutcher/Orlando Bloom/Jesse Bradfords/Freddie Prinze Jr/Matthew Lillard/Wes Bentley/Ryan Phillippe/Billy Cudrup/Sean William Scott/Chris Klein/James Franco all went absolutely nowhere with mainstream film.
The 1990s biggest stars if Leo, Pitt, Cruise, Smith etc are all still Hollywoods biggest names.
The Ashton Kutcher- Orlando Bloom- Freddie Prinze Jr etc generation I blame entirely on Hollywood. Didn't know what to do with them. They were fine when they were in Cosmo Girl but once they aged out the Studios had nothing for them. Joshua Jackson is another one that deserves to do better. I was hoping more people would pay attention to him after The Affair.
