Some incredibly dramatic posts in here lmao
The movie industry isn't dying in the next ten years. We're just in a very unknown place domestically, politically, economically.
Streaming isn't going to take over, just like TV didn't kill the theaters. VHS/DVD/blu ray didn't kill theaters. Studios aren't stupid. They know they're going to make more money by releasing in theaters.
Streaming has already taken over. Disney's latest quarterly revenue from Disney+ and Hulu is already more than they ever made from theatrical, and that is just from one quarter.
Theaters will continue to have a role to play, but it will be at a much diminished scale.

"Look at all these memes about this thing no one cares about"
Remember: NCIS, Heartland, and Virgin River are three of the most streamed TV shows in America. They don't trend or go viral but people actually watch them.
Considering Gen Z mostly watches YouTube and Tik Tok, the memes is definitely a sign that people care about The Challengers

Maybe dvds will come back someday as a nostalgic fad the way vinyl has for music.
More like 4Ks instead of DVDs. The difference in quality between Vinyl and streaming is negligible whereas the difference in quality between DVDs and streaming is not

Feel like Crunchyroll/Sony messed up with Spy x Family. If they had released it in Feb when the second season ended and theaters were still barren probably would have gotten a couple million more.

This year has been abismal for the industry, we are almost at the middle of the year and the BO total is not even 2 billion.
We're barely a quarter of the way through the year...

Why is there even a board seat battle when the stock is up 36% ytd? Might not like Iger, but he has done well by the shareholders

so you’re missing this forum for some weeks I guess lol, some people even called out @Shawn Robbins cuz his first projection was basically like “Calm down, Dune won’t be making a 100M OW”, and he turned out to be right. However, some weeks ago some people were overhyped after some news saying that “rival studios” were seeing Dune making 1 billion. Shawn was the first one (or at least one of them) to bring down to earth those crazy expectations. Some people (not only on this forum) got upset because he was not even considering 100M as a possibility.
Who? I won’t be exposing anyone. Tracking is a really hard thing to do, people who this for love deserve every praise. Sometimes you get it right some times you don’t. And this is ok.- 1

yeah… as well as some trackers projected it to make “possibly” 100M+.It ended up in between though.
Which trackers? I don't remember anyone from the tracking team ever saying it was looking like a 100 million opener

there's really not a lot of money in streaming if the movie goes to a streaming service owned by the same company that produced the film (no money from a licensing deal).
Iirc, there might not be actual cash paid out but the streaming division still "pays" a fee to the production division in order to add it to streaming.

Movies don't really make a shit ton on ancillaries anymore unless its on merch and that's usually kids movies specialty.
Maybe I'm wrong but Dune merch doesn't seem all that big.
PVOD, Blu Rays and licensing fees are ancillaries no?

FEBRUARY 22-25 WEEKEND.
1. Demon Slayer: To the Hashira Training - $75.7M
2. Ferrari - $17.2M
3. Madame Web - $13.9M/$72M (-63.23%)
4. Todas Menos Tú - $7.8M/$28.4M (-37.6%)
5. One Love - $6.7M/$27M (-48.45%)
6. 57 Seconds - $5.6M
7. The Chosen - $4.7M
8. Poor Things - $4.5M/$87.8M (-37.5%)
9. Anyone but You - $4.4M/$136.2M (-46.34%)
10. Baghead - $3.8M/25.2M (-42.42%)
A year later, Demon Slayer blows expectations once again with the highest grossing opening of the year and the first one with 1M+ admissions. It'll likely remain with the title until either Kung Fu Panda 4 or Kong & Zilla dethrone it but nevertheless a wonderful result for the new entry of the saga: +20% from To The Swordsmith Village in lc and a whopping 40% increase in admissions!
All newcomers dissapoint during a weekend that was already depressed for holdovers; Ferrari's numbers would've been decent if not for the fact that it released on a sizable numbers of screens (1,200+) and its PSA is quite mediocre. At this point what matters are legs.
Poor Things still doing some good numbers as it already became the biggest hit for a C-Rated title since 2019's John Wick: Parabellum. Not bad for Disney.
Local comedy Todas Menos Tú holds good enough to top One Love which couldn't spread a good WOM at the end and will fade away rather quickly.
Anyone But You couldn't recover after its weekend 4 drop but can't argue it wasn't a pleasant surprise having surpassed even local rom-coms that came out in recent years. How is the anime scene in Mexico? I remember in the early 2000s Canal 5 used to show DBZ every weekday at prime time. You also had stuff like Inuyasha and Super Campeones that were big in their own right too.
Do they still show stuff over the air like at Canal 5 or has it moved to behind a paywall?

But enough to buy Paramount?
I doubt it. WN has got ot bet the debt down. You do know they opay inhterest on the debt, don't you?
Theyve paid down 12 Billion in debt in the last year. Most of their debt was accrued when interest rates were a lot lower than now and they don't need to pay all cash to acquire Paramount, they can do a stock only acquisition.
So to answer your question, yes they have enough to buy Paramount.

It depends on WB's debt honestly
Not really, it's not like the debt is maturing soon. They have a healthy cash flow and a profitable streaming platform, they have room to invest.

I don’t necessarily agree. There’s still Star Wars content, it was just Disney+ shows for their streaming service. The Disney/Fox merger didn’t lead to anything more innovative or creative, it just made them bigger. Plus there’s more to the business and mergers than just franchise films.
That’s probably for the best. Not every studio needs a streaming service. Paramount+ is janky and basically given away for free because they have few subscribers.
paramount plus has more subscribers than Hulu and Peacock. Paramount plus should come close to breaking even this year

Has there ever been a movie that hit streaming that you had to pay extra to see?
Good to see Disney staying with the 90 day window before putting it on streaming even if it was a bomb

Any news on when SxF might release in the US? Feel like with the recent season just ending and the lack of movies coming out, it can have a relatively big gross.

They still spent $100M on marketing and it's very OS/China heavy which is where studios get less revenue from
Ancillaries cover marketing costs. Why's is it so hard to accept that in the current context of CBM, Aquaman is over performing? Yes, in a very black and white sense it is a flop, but movie business is rarely back and white.

Given that Wonka has been overestimated every single day after its opening weekend, so much that last weekend's projections went down from 33 to the actual 28 milion, i wouldn't be surprised if:
1- Night Swim goes on to win the weekend by an hair
2- Wonka fails to reach 200 M or ends up with a sub 5x multiplier (when people here where initially expecting it to make as much as 350-400 M).
Weren't most movies overestimated last weekend due to New Year's Eve?
Weekend Numbers [05.24 - 05.27, 2024] | 4-day actuals | 32.3M FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA | 31.3M THE GARFIELD MOVIE | 22.3M IF | 17.6M KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
