  1. Very few expected Battleship or John Carter to do well, especially when we go to release.

Trek is going to come in well below the deflated expectations from this week.

And I have no idea what the fuck happened to my picture. What the hell is that weird dude?! FUUUCK

You're definitely right about John Carter, but I think there was some real optimism for Battleship considering its summer release date and Transformers-like premise.  Actually STiD seems to be following in Battleship's footsteps.  Both released two weeks after the huge marvel movie of the summer.

  2. I have a question: Is the 3D in Trek decent, or is it just an afterthought?

It's mostly bullshit.  The arrows in the beginning look good in 3D, the debris field they fly through looks okay, and the trail of blue stuff that's left behind after they warp looks good too.  Other than that no.  In fact there was a noticeable amount of blurry objects in the foreground of some shots.

  3. Domestically, 3D might be fading, but overseas it's delivering 600-700 million grossers where you'd normally have 400-500 million, and  it's only increasing.

I'm not hating on 3D,  I think it works for some movies (Life of Pi, Hugo, Avatar) but I think for most movies domestically people go out of their way to not see it in 3D.  If it sells overseas that's great and they can keep it if they want it, but I've never sat in nearly empty 350/400-seat theater for newly released blockbuster before.  It was really strange.

  4. Think I'm just going to give up on working out STid,  looks like BOG earlier est he got 21-23m is more on the cards, strange but still it happens, I can't see anything drastically happening to increase it

    Stid 21-23, IM3 9.2, TGG 7.4

STiD needs one hell of a saturday bump. Better than I expected for IM3 and Gatsby. Also, can 3D just end already?  I just saw STiD tonight in 3D, there were eight people in the theater.  The 2D shows before and after had sold out.

  5. Iron Man is another in Marvel's bland assembly line of crap from no name directors. Shane Black is a decent writer but not exactly known for directing. And look who they have directing Captain America 2: two directors who know nothing about directing action sequences or big budget filmmaking in general. They pick directors who have no clout so they can push them around and focus group their movies into blandness.

I'd honestly like to see what Anthony and Joe Russo bring to Captain America 2.  I just hope Kevin Feige doesn't interfere too much.

  6. KUNG FU PANDA 2 increased 125.7% on its first Friday from its muted Thursday opening day. If Trek did that from its preview-less opening day, it would have a 25.9m Friday and probably an 80m weekend (+20% Saturday, -26% Sunday), 93.5m 4.5-day.

Good news for Trek is that I think families have seen Iron Man 3 already and this sci-fi action film will fit the bill. Bad news for Trek is that its only optimistic comparison is against an animated movie. Worse news for Trek is that it's facing competition in basically every demo next weekend and it really needed to get as much money as possible over these first few days.

I guess it comes down to the families, but this was marketed as a dark Star Trek movie (Star Trek: The Dark Knight if you will).  It's even called Star Trek Into Darkness.  Iron Man 3 had a much more colorful and adventurous marketing campaign.  StiD ads felt like you were going to see a revenge movie.  Not that that's a bad thing, it's just with Epic opening next week I don't know if the families are going to show up this weekend.  I still think that we need Friday numbers before a real meltdown though.

  7. The Avengers Side Effect: Everything that it's released close to the release date of an Avenger film turns to a flop until at least three weeks have passed.

This is partly but I wouldn't say this is specific to just Avengers movies, this happens with most big movies.  I could make the case that The Dark Knight Rises probably killed demand for Total Recall and the Bourne Legacy last year.  Without friday numbers it's premature to say this is a bomb, but if it is it could be just as much the fault of TH3 and FF 6 next weekend as it is IM3's fault two weekends ago.

  8. Is there a reason that Paramount moved up the release date a week before it came out?  Did they suddenly realize that TH3 and FF6 were probably opening big the weekend after, get scared and move the release date up a day to grab a little extra money?  At least when Sony moved up TASM to Tuesday to put as much distance between it and TDKR they gave a lot of notice.
