The race for the #1 spot this weekend is very contested between Beauty and the Beast in its eighth weekend, and the debut of Confessions of a Murderer. There's a high chance that one film will be #1 in terms of admissions, while the other ranks #1 in terms of gross.

    >Beauty and the Beast barely dropped in its eighth weekend, aiming to achieve its 8th-consecutive week atop the box office. It also closes the gap between it and Alice in Wonderland from 3.1% last week to 2.1% this week based on estimates. It's very likely to overtake Alice in the next week or two, and is almost assured to become Disney's highest-grossing live-action film of all-time as a result.

    >Confessions of a Murderer is a nice result for Warner Bros., who continues to have better success distributing domestic films. There's a 50/50 chance that it dethroned Beauty and the Beast to claim the #1 spot, but a second place start at nearly ¥300 million is quite good, especially for the month of June. It was quite stable over the weekend (flat on Sunday), so legs should be fine and could push it near a ¥2 billion ($20 million) total. The film is a remake of the 2012 South Korean film.

    >Hirugao: Love Affairs in the Afternoon opens pretty well, even if it has to settle for a third place debut. There was clear signs of frontloading occurring over the weekend, but a total over ¥1 billion ($10 million) is a lock, and it might finish closer to ¥1.5 billion ($15 million). The film is set three years after the events of the popular Fuji TV drama (13.9% avg.) of the same name, based around housewives having affairs while their husbands are at work.

Great hold for BatB.  So at least 1B¥ at least.  How much more can it get?

So this is GOTG2's first sub-$1M day

But it's already sitting at $359M so yeah, hardly a problem

Down only -38% from last Thursday.  It's holds from last week have not been as strong as AoU for the past few days but pretty good considering the direct competition.  380 is a pretty safe bet but think it can still leg it to 390+.

BOM has GOTG2 raking in 13M this weekend. As much as I love Guardians, I think it's a bit of a stretch. 36% drop will be insane and may seal the 400m DOM.

11.5m seems like the realistic goal here. Even that would be impressive.

If it can track AoU for the weekend it'll get about 11.4.   -45% from Memorial Day 3-Day weekend would be a great hold in the face of it's first major direct competitor, keeping 400 still alive.  390 would be an achievable target with an 11.4-11.5 type of weekend.

And it'll likely have a softer drop next weekend.  The Mummy isn't likely to have the same impact as WW.

  6. That POTC5 drop doesn't look great at first glance.

    GotG2 Wed-Wed drop (-36%) is still better than AoU (-39%) CACW (-47%)  IM3 (-45%) and even TA (-37%)

If it weren't for WW around the corner I'd say 390+ target.   Let's see how hard it's hit this weekend.

And BatB still showing amazing late legs.  I'm thinking another 3-4M even with Blu-Ray being released next week.

So I was correct, that 40% drop was bunk. 400M is still alive, we'll see the WW impact.

Yeah it'll all depend on next weekend. If it falls hard it may even shoot down 390.

Just did a quick comp chart...

Post MD weekend drops, 4-Day MD weekend multiplier, GotG2 gross with same multiplier

    CACW -49%.  2.53, 382

    IM3 -56.3%. 2.47, 380

    TA -44.2%. 3.11, 398

True, but worse drop than Iron Man 2 this weekend.

It has followed IM2 relatively closely.:jeb!:

Disney has GotG2 dropping -13.6% on Sunday.  It's a conservative hold compared to IM2 (-5.1%), AoU (-2.9%), CACW (-4.1%), IM3 (-11.8%).  More likely than not, it'll go up with actual.  380+ looks good, 390 doable. 400 unlikely but not dead.

A bit of a slow, boring week, so I wasn't too motivated to post a Weekend Forecast this weekend. May and June are two of the weaker months of the year, so don't expect anything exciting until July rolls around.

    As for this weekend, though:

Beauty and the Beast goes unchallenged once again and will claim its sixth-consecutive weekend atop the box office, probably earning ¥325-350 million ($3.0-3.2 million) over the weekend. Its six week total should be around ¥9.6 billion ($85 million) after Sunday.

Second and third place this weekend is a bit off a toss-up between the top two openers, but one is favored slightly over the other:

First, coming in the likely second place position comes the latest film Yoji Yamada film, What a Wonderful Family! 2, debuting this weekend looking to deliver a modest debut between ¥125-150 million ($1.1-1.3 million) based on its Saturday admissions. That's a little on the low end of most Yamada films, but since his films skew very old they typically rely on weekdays rather than weekends. This marks the 85 year-old's 84th theatrical release.

And the likely third place film this weekend will probably go to To Each His Own, Toho's live-action adaptation of the award-winning novel. Based on Saturday's figures, it'll come in around ¥110-130 million ($1.0-1.2 million).

So about 20-26% drop for BatB

It's amazing how a couple weeks ago some people were saying that after its OW GotG Vol. 2 would barely match its predecessor's total and now it's gonna achieve this feat in its fourth weekend. :)

Great hold for GotG2.  If it follows AoU pattern, about 21.5M 3-day 28 4-day and it'll pass GotG1 by Sunday.

  12. 2 hours ago, SpiritComix said:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had the smallest drop of the top five (-25%). On par with the first movie drop, but bigger than 'Civil War' (-21.4%) and 'Age of Ultron' (-22.9%).

    GOTG Vol 2  ($2,534,650) > A: AoU ($2,329,898) > CA: CW ($2,272,708).

Still keeping slight hope of GotG2 400 alive at least for another day.  AoU made another 78M after this point on but as can be seen GotG2 has been holding better.  Of course AoU didn't have another CBM movie hitting it after Memorial Day weekend but I think Guardians' late legs will still be better overall.
