Yeah, Dark Shadows and Battleship were problematic films. They don't hit all the demos and they had pretty bad buzz. I think MIB3 and SWATH will get things back on track. Even if they get mediocre reviews, I think there's more there to sell. MIB3 has nostalgia and Will Smith. SWATH has effective trailers and tv spots and female appeal.

It does my heart good to see it pass AIW.

I think it's too soon to even guess. What if they add Spider-man? What if they do a Black Panther movie or something and it takes off? There are a lot of directions the sequel could go. And I think Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 will just continue building the hype.I don't think even Avengers 2 will top this. It will be "smaller scale" or something.

I'm not sure I've ever been this excited for actuals. What a weekend. And I just want to say thanks to all the mods. I really liked having this one continuous thread throughout the weekend. Made discussions much more fun to follow. I hope we do the same for TDKR and TH.

I can't wait until we start hearing about what characters they'll add for the next one. Ant Man? Wasp? Ms. Marvel? Scarlet Witch? It's gonna be fun.And speaking of JLA, I wonder which execs are kicking themselves now for not letting Whedon take a shot at Wonder Woman.

I had anything below $12 mill as a disappointment, anything above $15 million as better than expected. So even if this gets revised down to $16 million, that's still excellent for a Marvel film.

That'd be a good number for BD. Creeping up on NM.

I have no idea how I think WOM will work for this. It's a very weird film. Not as easy a sell as Eclipse was, but not as boring as NM was either. I could see people being turned off by the creepiness of it all or I could see the curiosity factor coming into play. Both scenarios are plausible. My gut is telling me that $42 million figure is going to go down and that the final OW number will be more like $135 million and that this won't come close to $300 mill. But my gut was also telling me that this would land in the $115 million range this weekend so it's obviously not very reliable.

Talking WOM with a Twi film is kind of pointless. The fans always love the films for about a week. EVERY film has had "great WOM" opening weekend. They'll hate it by next weekend.

Variety is now saying $135 million weekend.Variety_JLD Josh Dickey BREAKING DAWN tracking for $135m; could fall a shade below NEW MOON.

How is it every other weekend, we have outlets fighting to get estimates out there by 2:00, but now it's totally quiet?
-
Yes, really impressive number without IMAX and for a fall opening. I wouldn't be surprised if Summit fudged the number to get it over Eclipse, but either way, it's off to a good start considering it's almost a year and a half since the last film.

Wow! I really didn't think it could go that high. Pleasantly surprised. Hopefully this bodes well for its domestic box office in general. Foreign box office seems lagging so far.
Thursday Est. box office MIB 4.1, Avengers 2.8, Battlesh 925k

I enjoy how this thread title is basically like you started to type out "Battleship" and then decided it wasn't even worth it.
